But in our love of our country, as a whole, may we not at times fail to allow our affections to go out warmly enough to our Homeland, the mountains amid which we were born, the valleys in which we have lived since childhood and to the people whom we have come to know well only after long association with them? Many of us seem, at least, to grip but lightly on these things by the apparent unconcern with which we sever all these ties and go out among strangers in strange places. Has not one of the strongest characteristics of our race always been its warm attachment to the home the family and the homeland? Has not our influence upon the history of the world been largely because of this element in our characters? Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of the meaning of pottery as a social activity in coastal North Carolina. Pottery types, composed of specific sets of attributes, have long been defined for various periods and areas of the Atlantic coast, but their relationships and meanings have not been explicitly examined. In exploring these relationships for the North Carolina coast, this work examines the manner in which pottery traits cross-cut taxonomic types, tests the proposition that communities of practice existed at several scales, and questions the fundamental notion of ceramic types as ethnic markers. Ethnoarchaeological case studies provide a means of assessing the mechanics of how social structure and gender roles may have affected the transmission of pottery-making techniques and how socio-cultural boundaries are reflected in the distribution of ceramic traditions. Another very valuable source of information about past practices is replication experimentation, which provides a means of understanding the practical techniques that lie behind the observable traits, thereby improving our understanding of how certain techniques may have influenced the transmission of traits from one potter to another. Both methods are employed in this study to interpret the meaning of pottery as an indicator of social activity on the North Carolina coast.

Although local antiquarians and collectors have been aware for many years that pottery constituted one of the largest early industries carried on by the Moravians in North Carolina, it was for the most part only the well-kept archival records that testified to this fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain Potters of Buncombe County, North Carolina: An Archaeological and Historical Study During the mid-nineteenth century a few traditional potters first moved into the valleys of Buncombe County and established their own pottery manufactories. Most of the potters who moved into the mountainous region near Asheville came from other re gions of the state (or from other neighboring states) where pottery production had already been established. Some originated from Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, or the Catawba Valley region of North Carolina (zug The potters brought with them the skills, technology, and vessel designs developed from ceramic traditions of these other regions. Once transplanted in their new region, temporal and material modifications of local resources by the potters soon developed into the Buncombe County ceramic tradition, unique by its own elements. All potters were predominately stoneware manufacturers, supplemented by the pro duction of earthenwares (terra cottas) used for agricultural or horticultural purposes. By the late 18005 to early 19005 two communities surrounding Asheville became pottery production centers (figure Several potteries were located near the small town of Candler, south of Asheville. The other center was located in and around the town of Weaverville, north of Asheville. The availability of natural resources (clays, water, land, and wood for fuel) in these two areas, the stability of established communities (with ample consumers for their goods), and perhaps, kinship ties were the primary factors behind these new pottery centers.
