Book excerpt: We report on characterization, performance and applications of nuclear detectors fabricated on Semi-Insulating (SI) Liquid Encapsulated Czokralski (LEC) grown GaAs. We have developed a non alloyed and non injecting ohmic contact (NAOC) based on ion implantation to fabricate detectors which can operate at applied voltages greater than the one needed to make them fully depleted. With such a detectors and at high applied voltages, Va> 500 V, a nearly full charge collection efficiency has been achieved for both alpha particles and X-rays. Furthermore the best energy resolution achieved at room temperature has been 1.1% for 5.48 MeV alpha particles and 26.1% for 59.5 keV X-rays, while at -30 °C the best energy resolution measured for X-rays has been 4.1%.

For this reason, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences, following the Gugliemo Marconi Centenary and the Luigi Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, decided to call attention to the major achievements of their most distinguished members, in science and technology. This invaluable volume presents a series of inventions and technological developments, some thought of and directly implemented by Professor Antonino Zichichi, others suggested and developed under his leadership, all of them having contributed to the discovery of new particles and new phenomena in the field of subnuclear physics. The book was conceived by an eminent scientist, Professor Dr Björn H Wiik, Director of Germany's most prestigious physics laboratory, DESY (Hamburg). It would not be published were it not for Professor Dr Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, and Dr Horst Wenninger from CERN (Geneva), the greatest European physics laboratory.

Book excerpt: Ionizing Radiation Detectors for Medical Imaging contains ten technical chapters, half of which are devoted to radiology and the other half to nuclear medicine. The last chapter describes the detectors for radiotherapy and portal imaging. Each chapter addresses completely a specific application. The emphasis is always on detector fundamentals and detector properties. Where necessary, software and specific applications are described in depth. This book is intended for graduate and undergraduate students in physics and engineering who want to study medical imaging. In addition, scientists who are working in a specific sub-field of medical imaging can acquire from the book an up-to-date description of the state of the art in related sub-fields, within the scope of ionizing radiation detectors. Other scientists, as well as physicians, can use the book as a reference for medical imaging.

The first part of this book provides a solid background for understanding the basic processes leading to the detection and tracking of charged particles, photons, and neutrons. Continuing then with the development of the multi-wire proportional chamber, the book describes the design and operation of successive generations of gas-based radiation detectors, as well as their use in experimental physics and other fields. Examples are provided of applications for complex events tracking, particle identification, and neutral radiation imaging. Limitations of the devices are discussed in detail. Including an extensive collection of data and references, this book is ideal for researchers and experimentalists in nuclear and particle physics. It has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advances in semiconductor detectors, scintillators, photodetectors such as SiPM, and readout electronics in the past decades have led to significant progress in terms of performance and greater choice of the detection tools in many applications. This second edition of Radiation Detection Systems presents the state-of-the-art in the design of detectors and integrated circuit design, in the context of medical imaging using ionizing radiation. The material in the book has been divided into two volumes. The first volume on Sensor Materials, Systems, Technology and Characterization Measurements puts more emphasis on sensor materials, detector and front electronics technology and designs as well as system optimization for different applications. It also includes characterization measurements of the developed detection systems. The second volume on Medical Imaging, Industrial Testing and Security Applications is devoted to more specific applications of detection systems in medical imaging, industrial testing and security applications. However, there is an unavoidable certain overlap in topics between both volumes. With its combined coverage of new materials and innovative new system approaches, as well as a succinct overview of recent developments, this two volumes set is an invaluable tool for any engineer, professional, or student working in electronics or an associated field.
