Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Toynbee's A Study of History has been acknowledged as one of the greatest achievements of modern scholarship. A ten-volume analysis of the rise and fall of human civilizations, it is a work of breath-taking breadth and vision. D.C. Somervell's abridgement, in two volumes, of this magnificent enterprise, preserves the method, atmosphere, texture, and, in many instances, the very words of the original. Originally published in 1947 and 1957, these two volumes are themselves a great historical achievement. Volume 1, which abridges the first six volumes of Toynbee's study, includes the Introduction, The Geneses of Civilizations, and The Disintegrations of Civilizations. Volume 2, an abridgement of Volumes VII-X, includes sections on Universal States, Universal churches, Heroic Ages, Contacts Between Civilizations in Space, Contacts Between Civilizations in Time, Law and Freedom in History, The Prospects of the Western Civilization, and the Conclusion. Of Somervell's work, Toynbee wrote, "The reader now has at his command a uniform abridgement of the whole book, made by a clear mind that has not only mastered the contents but has entered into the writer's outlook and purpose."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable thinkers of this century, Arnold Toynbee won world-wide recognition as the author of the monumental ten-volume A Study of History. Its publication and phenomenal success brought him fame and the highest praise, as the reading public proclaimed him the most renowned scholar in the world. This thought-provoking, engaging study of Toynbee, written by one of today's most eminent historians, weaves together Toynee's intellectual accomplishments and the personal difficulties of his private life. Providing both an intimate portrait of a leading thinker and a judicious evaluation of his work and his legacy for the the study of history, William H. McNeill offers both a biography and a commentary on how to write and understand history. Along with an illuminating discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of A Study of History and the countless other works written by Toynbee, McNeill offers a compelling examination of the responses of other historians (including the devastating attack launched by Hugh Trevor-Roper) and Toynbee's attempts to modify his Study to answer these criticisms. McNeill also explores his tormented personal life, including his troubled marriage to Rosalind Murray and the suicide of his son, Anthony. In this sympathetic depiction of a life, both triumphant and tragic, McNeill brings his skills to bear on one of the greatest figures in his field, illuminating a career of rare accomplishment.

Book Synopsis The Industrial Revolution: A Translation into Modern English by : Arnold Toynbee
Download or read book The Industrial Revolution: A Translation into Modern English written by Arnold Toynbee and published by Industrial Systems Research. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easier-to-read current language version of the 1884 classic – with a new extended editorial foreword. Arnold Toynbee’s 1884 book is the pioneering general study of the Industrial Revolution. The author combines history and economics to examine its key features, causes and effects. Toynbee rejects the notion that economic development is subject to any immutable “iron laws”. For him, there are no fixed limits to cultivatable land, food supplies, population increase or general economic growth and performance. Improvements in real wages, rents, profits and interest rates can continue indefinitely. In addition, no class has a predetermined place in the economy and society. Toynbee speculates about the future of the working classes and possibilities for improving their material conditions. However, he finds the Marxist doctrine of state Socialism inevitably replacing free market enterprise without basis in economic or historical fact. This modernized version translates the book into current English to improve its readability and understandability. Contents: Editorial foreword 1. Introduction 2. England in 1760: population 3. England in 1760: agriculture 4. England in 1760: manufacturing and trade 5. England in 1760: the decline of the yeomanry 6. England in 1760: the condition of the wage earners 7. The mercantilist system and Adam Smith 8. The chief features of the Revolution 9. The growth of pauperism 10. Malthus and the law of population 11. The wage-fund theory 12. Ricardo and the growth of rent 13. Two theories of economic progress 14. The future of the working classes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Time magazine Toynbee was ’an international sage’ and certainly in the same bracket as ‘Einstein, Schweitzer or Bertrand Russell’. Daisaku Ikeda is a figure of global stature, the spiritual leader of a worldwide lay Buddhist organization devoted to the promotion of education, culture and peace. Between 1972 and 1974 Toynbee and Ikeda discussed many of the vital issues which confronted their societies in the early 1970s, all of which remain current and significant. Indeed, topics such as the problems of pollution, dwindling natural resources, conflict and war, the role of religion, and population growth, are even more pressing than they were thirty years ago. In this influential and inspiring volume, which records their wide-ranging conversations, the challenge issued by both men is framed as follows: will humankind choose to salvage its destiny by a revolution in thinking and morals? Or will disaster ensue if it pursues its present course towards self-destruction and the despoliation of the environment? While recognizing that our survival is threatened by the imbalance between human immaturity and technological achievement, the optimistic message of this classic dialogue is that man-made evils have a man-made cure.

Book Synopsis Sociology Faces Pessimism by : Robert Benjamin Bailey
Download or read book Sociology Faces Pessimism written by Robert Benjamin Bailey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My initial interest in sociology stemmed from the desire to see specific social change in certain areas of my native United States of America. My rather naive assumption at that time was that if the truth is known about social phenomena and presented to rational and educated persons, public opinion will bring about the desirable social change. That is, I assumed some automatic linkage between truth, rationality and social progress. Certainly some of the so-called "pioneers" of sociology also assumed this automatic linkage. Thus, the opportunity to study in Europe, on the soil of some of these "pioneers" heightened my interest and desire to learn more about the relationship between sociology and social progress. After living and studying several years in various parts of Western Europe - England, Germany, France, Holland - one finds that European sociology has remained very closely associ ated with social philosophy and history, has often been resisted by the universities, and is not as empirical as American sociology. The European sociologist, still quite conscious of the mistakes of the early fathers - Comte, Spencer, Marx, among others - is extremely cautious concerning problems of social progress and social action. He is aware that his science is still young and sus pect. He is also less sure than his predecessors about the exact role of sociology.
