Book excerpt: This study examined published research on sexual risk behaviors and the people who engage in them. Using current and past literature, an extensive review and analysis of attitudes, beliefs, and causes of sexual risk behaviors was done. Sexual risk behaviors were defined within the following models: medical, alcohol and drug, societal views, self definitions, and cultural definitions. The age groups studied were: adolescence (12-17), young adulthood (18-25), middle adulthood (26-50), and later adulthood (51 and older). Studies of homosexual men and women and heterosexual women and men were reviewed as well as a comparison of gender differences. Studies about religion and culture were reviewed, as well as health, psychological co-morbidity, and substance abuse. And, finally, a review of interventions used was examined. A critical analysis was done of 164 articles to determine themes, which emerged as gender, age, ethnicity, assessments used, procedures used, limitations within the articles, and sexual orientation. Finally, an educational pamphlet was developed to target the largest at-risk group, people between the ages of 18-25 years. Based on sexual risk behavior literature, this study examines the impact that risky sexual behaviors have on a person and society, and it also highlights the importance of accessible education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality in Emerging Adulthood provides a comprehensive overview of sexuality at the stage straddling adolescence and adulthood. The first section of the volume offers conceptualizations and foundational perspectives on sexuality in emerging adulthood, with topics including theory, developmental considerations, sexual behavior, sexual beliefs and attitudes, associations with romance, casual sex, and sexual orientation. The second section systematically examines contexts and socializing agents of sexual development, including parents, peers, media, and religion. The third section narrows in on the overarching theme of the series by addressing factors leading to flourishing and floundering in the area of sexuality during emerging adulthood, such as effects of early adversity, sexual health, sexual well-being, sexuality and mental health, and sexual assault. Accompanying seven of the chapters in the volume are brief scientific reports offering new related research. The volume also contains four method tutorials that discuss topics in sex research such as ethical considerations, recruitment and incentive strategies, and identity-affirming methods. Concluding with innovative new perspectives on the integration of sexual health promotion and sexual violence prevention, this volume is crucial reading for academic scholars and those working with and supporting emerging adults.

Book excerpt: More than 1 million teenage girls in the United States become pregnant each year; nearly half give birth. Why do these young people, who are hardly more than children themselves, become parents? This volume reviews in detail the trends in and consequences of teenage sexual behavior and offers thoughtful insights on the issues of sexual initiation, contraception, pregnancy, abortion, adoption, and the well-being of adolescent families. It provides a systematic assessment of the impact of various programmatic approaches, both preventive and ameliorative, in light of the growing scientific understanding of the topic.

Book excerpt: In 2005, more than 25 million adults and children worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS and more than 75% of these were in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies indicate that the incidence of HIV infection and the prevalence of high-risk behaviors among young populations continue to rise in developing countries. AIDS has severe economic impacts, especially in high-risk countries such as Nigeria. This project used secondary data from the 2003 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The 2003 NDHS is a cross-sectional, multistage, stratified survey with systematic sampling that was designed to obtain information on key population and health indicators such as sexual activity, knowledge about AIDS and other STDs, and behavior associated with AIDS and other STDs for the entire Nigerian population, including people living in rural areas, urban areas, and six major geographic regions. Analyses were restricted to sexually active adolescents and young adults 15 to 24 years of age who are Nigerians living in Nigeria in 2003. The sample size was (n=2,418), of which 2,009 are females and 409 are males. Non-Nigerians and Nigerians in Diaspora were excluded in the original design of the survey. Also, those younger than 15 years or older than 24 years were excluded in this study. This research examined the association between independent variables and other covariates with risky sexual behaviors such as lack of condom use and multiple sex partners, as well as possible difference by gender. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression models, adjusting for age, education and religion. All tests were done at 95% significant leve. l-- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in young people has long been a tough call for clinicians, either for fear of stigmatizing the child or confusing the normal mood shifts of adolescence with pathology. Now, a recent upsurge in relevant research into early-onset BPD is inspiring the field to move beyond this hesitance toward a developmentally nuanced understanding of the disorder. The Handbook of Borderline Personality Disorder in Children and Adolescents reflects the broad scope and empirical strengths of current research as well as promising advances in treatment. This comprehensive resource is authored by veteran and emerging names across disciplines, including developmental psychopathology, clinical psychology, child psychiatry, genetics and neuroscience in order to organize the field for an integrative future. Leading-edge topics range from the role of parenting in the development of BPD to trait-based versus symptom-based assessment approaches, from the life-course trajectory of BPD to the impact of the DSM-5 on diagnosis. And of particular interest are the data on youth modifications of widely used adult interventions, with session excerpts. Key areas featured in the Handbook: The history of research on BPD in childhood and adolescence. Conceptualization and assessment issues. Etiology and core components of BPD. Developmental course and psychosocial correlates. Empirically supported treatment methods. Implications for future research, assessment and intervention. The Handbook of Borderline Personality Disorder in Children and Adolescents is a breakthrough reference for researchers and clinicians in a wide range of disciplines, including child and school psychology and psychiatry, social work, psychotherapy and counseling, nursing management and research and personality and social psychology.

The study is grounded in Bronfenbrenner's (1977, 1979) ecological systems theory in that risk factors from participants' "systems" of influence are examined. Subjects were recruited from four mid-western public schools, female, ages 14 to 17. Participants completed measures to assess risk factors for risky sexual behaviors and to identify sexual behaviors. Additionally, participants completed the Adolescent Attitudes Regarding Dating Relationships scale (AARDR), an instrument that measures high school-aged adolescents' attitudes regarding dating relationships (Davidson, 2005). Three models were examined using structural equation modeling to determine the impact of attitudes on sexual behaviors, with and without consideration for other risk factors. Results indicated that the model with a direct path between attitudes and sexual behavior outcomes was the best fit to the data collected.

It is unusual because of the period of time in which the study took place, as well as because of the portion of the lifespan it covers - early adulthood. Concerned with understanding the role of problem behaviour in young adulthood and the factors that influence it, the study also traces outcomes on young adulthood of earlier involvements in problem behaviour, with an emphasis on personality and social environment. The research extends and tests the theoretical framework that guided the study - Problem Behaviour Theory - and shows its usefulness for understanding young adult problem behaviour and development.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior in undergraduate college students, with special reference to self-esteem and attitudes toward contraceptive efficacy. Because unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are prevalent among young adults, the purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship among factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior. This quantitative, correlational, and descriptive study used a questionnaire and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale to measure levels of the respondent's demographics, sexual health beliefs, knowledge, behaviors, self-esteem and contraceptive efficacy with a nonprobability sample of 76 undergraduate students at California State University, Sacramento. Overall findings showed that higher contraceptive efficacy contributes to safer sexual behaviors, but did not find correlations between self-esteem and sexual behavior. While some aspects of contraceptive efficacy were not strongly related to self-esteem, there is significance to evidence the fact that higher levels of self-esteem can assist in empowering people to stop sex, even at the risk of upsetting their partner, in favor of protecting their own health. The level of fulfillment in respondent's social life was found to correlate to contraceptive efficacy scores in this study. Additionally, higher levels of perceived sexual health knowledge of the respondents is correlated to higher levels of contraceptive efficacy. Recommendations include the need for targeted interventions to increase awareness, knowledge, and efficacy of sexual behavior among young college students; particularly to assist at-risk populations in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS has become a ubiquitous disease of catastrophic proportions. In this 'sex study' included as part of the Advocate magazine in 1994, attitudes and sexual activities of 13,000 gay men nationwide were surveyed. A set of research hypotheses were made, these were: that there would be a relationship between various sociodemographic, intepersonal and relational, substance use, sexual, experiential, and health care variables and high-risk sexual behavior. Some of these hypotheses were confirmed, while others were not. The particular value of this study is that it was nationwide, contained large numbers of participants and large numbers of variables, included all sizes of metropolitan areas, and specifically defined high-risk sexual activity. While many of the results confirm previous studies, the constellation and clustering of results perhaps points to issues larger than HIV and high-risk sexual behaviors alone, issues that are fundamentally societal. It is hoped that basic societal changes in attitudes towards gay men and women will reduce the isolation, loneliness, and feelings of being different that may well underlie the high rates of drug use and the meaning of the nature of sexual activity that is often present in gay community. It is at this fundamental societal level that progress against AIDS will need to proceed.

Book excerpt: This article describes the sexual behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of Asian and Pacific Islander California high school students and compares them to other racial/ethnic groups. Data were collected in April 1992 from an anonymous self-administered survey of 2026 ninth to 12th graders in a Los Angeles County school district; 186 of the respondents described themselves as Asian and Pacific Islander. A higher percentage of Asian and Pacific Islander adolescents compared with African-American, Latino, white, and other adolescents had never had vaginal intercourse. Asian and Pacific Islander high school students in one California school district appear to be at lower sexual risk than other racial/ethnic groups. However, a large minority are engaging in activities that can transmit disease and lead to unwanted pregnancy. Efforts to develop culturally sensitive clinical and community-based approaches to sexual risk prevention should include this group.
