The model of galactic formation we examine proposes that this color bimodality is the result of dissipationless hierarchical clustering. Our primary goal in this study is to establish the likelihood such a model produces color distributions like those seen in astronomical observations. A large computer program was written in FORTRAN to do Monte Carlo simulations of galactic formation on a high speed computer. We confirm the findings of previous authors that this model can produce bimodal color distributions, like those observed in the heavens. However, we find the frequency of bimodal distributions produced is low. We conclude this is not a viable model for the origin of the majority of globular cluster systems in elliptical galaxies.

Book excerpt: Galaxy clustering encodes information about the values of cosmological parameters and also about the physical processes behind galaxy formation and evolution. The GALFORM semi-analytical model is the theoretical approach we used to model galaxy formation. We start by studying the luminosity dependence of galaxy clustering which is measured accurately in the local Universe. We have compared the clustering predictions of three publicly available galaxy formation models with clustering measurements from the 2dFGRS and found that two new processes need to be included in order to understand the observed clustering. We then study the distribution of cold gas in dark matter haloes central to the processes of galaxy formation. We present the cold gas mass function and its evolution with redshift. We have found that the clustering predicted by the semi-analytic models agrees well with the HIPASS measurements of Meyer et al. (2007). We have calculated effective volume for redshift surveys planned with Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and compared with that of the optical Euclid mission. Finally, we study the clustering of faint extragalactic sources which are one of the foregrounds in PLANCK maps. We predict the clustering of faint extragalactic sources using a hybrid GRASIL+GALFORM+N-body model. We have compared the hybrid scheme with analytic clustering estimates. On large scales the two approaches agree, but for multipoles with l>500 the results differ significantly, with the hybrid approach being the more accurate.

Galaxy clusters are now one of the most important cosmological probes to test the standard cosmological models. Constraints on the Dark Energy equation of state from the cluster number density measurements, deviations from the Gaussian perturbation models, the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect as well as the dark matter proles are among the issues to be studied with clusters. The baryonic composition of clusters is dominated by hot gas that is in quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium within the dark matter-dominated gravitational potential well of the cluster. The hot gas is visible through spatially extended thermal X-ray emission, and it has been studied extensively both for assessing its physical properties and as a tracer of the large-scale structure of the Universe. Magnetic fields as well as a number of non-thermal plasma processes play a role in clusters of galaxies as we observe from radioastronomical observations. The goal of this volume is to review these processes and to investigate how they are interlinked. Overall, these papers provide a timely and comprehensive review of the multi-wavelength observations and theoretical understanding of clusters of galaxies in the cosmological context. Thus, the volume will be particularly useful to postgraduate students and researchers active in various areas of astrophysics and space science.
