Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a systematic study on gold nanoparticles: from their chemical synthesis, modification of surface functionalities, optical properties studies with emphasis on the absorption and scattering properties, to applications of gold nanoparticles in biomolecular detection, imaging and photothermal therapy. In chapter 2, we studied the kinetics of gold nanoparticle growth under Brust-Shiffrin reaction conditions. In chapter 3, we further examined the reaction mechanism and growth kinetics of gold nanoparticles using oleylamine as both a reducing reagent and particle growth passivation ligand. From these two projects, important understanding was revealed on gold nanoparticle formation and growth mechanism. Chapter 4 describes the synthesis of a monofunctional gold nanoparticle through a solid phase place exchange reaction. From Chapter 5, we moved to the optical property study of gold nanoparticles, particularly the absorption and scattering phenomenon. In this work a systematic analysis on the extinction coefficient of gold nanoparticles was performed, providing meaningful references for applications based on optical absorption properties of gold nanoparticles. In Chapter 6 and Chapter 7, we developed a one-step homogeneous immunoassay for protein detection and analysis based on the strong light scattering of gold nanoparticles and dynamic light scattering detection technique. In Chapter 8, we further improved the stability of gold nanoparticle bioconjugates using a poly(ethylene glycol)-coated gold nanoparticles and further tested this nanoparticle in the one-step homogeneous immunoassay. Finally in Chapter 9, we demonstrated the application of gold nanoparticles for in vitro bioimaging and photothermal therapy of a lung cancer cell. In summary, this dissertation presents a comprehensive study on the synthesis, surface modification, property study of gold nanoparticles and their applications in biomolecular imaging and analysis.

The physics of heat generation and heat transfer by diffusion, convection and radiation are examined, and the effect of thermoplasmonics on the random lasing of nanoparticles is described. Nanoparticles are being incorporated into a variety of devices to improve their performance. Recent advances in applications of the plasmonic effects of nanoparticles, significantly focused on the incorporation of gold nanoparticles to improve solar cell efficiencies, are discussed. The authors go on to investigate the formation of elongated gold nanoparticles, which occurred by laser ablation of gold target in aqueous solutions containing divalent ions. Additionally, the influence of a permanent external magnetic field on generated earlier colloidal solutions of Au nanoparticles is investigated. The penultimate chapter describes the events that lead to gold's well-deserved reputation as a good catalyst for several reactions, and considers some of the applications and catalytic uses of gold, mostly in the form of nanoparticles. The concluding study explores gold nanoparticles' applications for the treatment of various forms of cancer, such as adenocarcinoma, melanoma, breast cancer, gastric, laryngeal, lung, oral cancer and prostate cancer. The first part aroused from a long-lasting idea to manipulate adsorption of nanoparticles at liquid-liquid with an external electric field to form 'smart' mirrors and/or filters. Therefore, Chapters 3 to 5 are dedicated to explore fundamental aspects of charged nanoparticles self-assembly and to investigate optical properties (extinction and reflectance) in a through manner. Novel tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-assisted method leads to self-assembly of nanoparticles into cm-scale nanofilms or, so-called, metal liquid-like droplets (MeLLDs) with remarkable optical properties. The second part (Chapters 6 to 8) clarifies the role of nanoparticles in interfacial electron transfer reactions. They demonstrate how nanoparticles are charged and discharged upon equilibration of Fermi levels with redox couples in solution and how it can be used to perform HER and ORR. Finally, Chapter 9 gives a perspective outlook, including applications of suggested methods in fast, one-step preparation of colloidosomes, SERS substrates as well as pioneer studies on so-called Marangony-type shutters drive by the electric field.
