Book excerpt: In the field of gifted education, there is little research on the perceptions of high school teachers of the gifted about giftedness, good gifted education practices, and the nature and needs of gifted learners. The purpose of this study was to form a deeper understanding of how those educators who guide gifted learners out of high school and into adulthood perceive giftedness and gifted education. This qualitative study, conducted in two phases, took place in a large suburban school district with three large high school systems and was focused on the responses of high school teachers to assess their attitudes, feelings, and opinions about the nature and needs of gifted learners using a grounded theory model of analysis. Data collected from the 11 participants in the first phase of the analysis was combined with that collected from the 13 participants in phase two and validated throughout with continual comparison through memoing. Participants reported a general lack of engagement with scholarly work in the gifted education field as well as a dependence on the school district for effective training in classroom practice. Evidence also suggested a view of giftedness among the participants as an inherent quality of some people who needed to be properly trained in the instructional environment. Implications from this study suggest further research, both qualitative and quantitative, needs to focus on clarifying the perception of giftedness among high school teachers as well as how the delivery of effective training to those teachers can be implemented.

Unintended results of enactments such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), have placed a focus on struggling students. The purpose of this study was to explore teacher and parent perceptions of an academically gifted program at two schools in a growing district at the eastern end of the greater Triangle region in North Carolina. The research focused on four questions: (a) How do parents of students identified as academically gifted perceive the way differentiated curriculum is currently being delivered; (b) How do teachers of students identified as academically gifted perceive the way differentiated curriculum is currently being delivered; (c) What outcomes would parents like to see as a result of their students participating in an elementary academically gifted program; and (d) What would teachers like to see provided in order to meet the academic needs of students identified as gifted? This study was qualitative in nature and data collection included survey and interview sessions. The results of the study indicated that enhancing the parent information practices for gifted students, implementing an early intervention program for higher performing students, designing effective professional development, and personalized learning would be beneficial for the gifted program. Without ensuring that gifted students receive a challenging curriculum the, concept of gifted underachievement will become a normalcy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative research study was to investigate gifted education teachers' perceptions of the use of authentic instruction as well as school-business and school-community partnerships with gifted students. Gifted education teachers from 23 Pennsylvania school districts and one gifted organization consisting of public school gifted education teachers were asked to take a survey (N=42) and an interview (N=4). The teachers responded to survey and interview questions specifically related to how often they use authentic instruction with gifted students, how they perceive the effectiveness of the core components of authentic instruction (higher order thinking skills, depth of knowledge, knowledge beyond the classroom, substantive conversation, and social support) with gifted students, and how they view the use of school-community or school-business partnerships to create authentic learning opportunities for students. This research found that the core components of authentic instruction are not only being utilized with gifted students, but are perceived by teachers in this study to be highly effective. The study revealed that the core component of knowledge beyond the classroom was found to be very effective by teachers, but not used as often as the other core components. Additionally, gifted education teachers identified having difficulty implementing that particular core component. Teachers noted they were not utilizing or had challenges creating school-community and school-business partnerships to create authentic learning opportunities for students. This study concluded that utilizing the core component of knowledge beyond the classroom and implementing school-community and school-business partnerships warrants further investigation.
