Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Study of Freight Transport in Hong Kong Submitted by Tsang Ki Keung for the degree of Master of Art Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 This paper gives a brief analysis and description of freight transport in Hong Kong. It states the improvement on transport policies and the competitiveness of freight transport in Hong Kong. Freight transport plays a very important role in Hong Kong. It not only promotes the development of transport and logistics industry but also the economic and trading development. It also states the difference between the four major freight transportation modes (air, sea, rail & land). In essence, each of them also contributes a lot to the integrated freight transport system. The main message here is that without the substantial improvement of freight transport competitiveness, the economy of Hong Kong cannot be further developed. The most effective and sustainable way of tackling freight transport problem is with combination of freight transport strategies; namely; meeting socioeconomic development needs (such as Freight Transport Management; co-ordination of the freight transport modes, timely provision of freight transport infrastructures); maintaining competitiveness of Hong Kong freight industry (such as efficiency, new technology, CEPA) and achieving sustainable freight transport system with environmental consideration As the obvious economic growth of neighboring city as Macao, there is genuine need for the improvement in the freight transport of Hong Kong in pursuit of further promotion of economic development. In fact, the existing freight transport related policies are effective. However, we are facing fierce competition from different countries. Thus, there is an urgent need for a better strategy / study to review and upgrade the quality of freight transport. Improvement of the competitiveness of freight transport is a must. However, without concern of the environment, the freight transport may not easily be further developed sustainably by the improvement solely. Thus, the freight transport in Hong Kong should be sustainable to achieve the global level. Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled "A Study of Freight Transport: Air Cargo in Hong Kong" submitted by SO Man Cheong For the degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at the University of Hong Kong in August 2007 Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has excellent geographic, so air cargo industry become one of the important industries in Hong Kong's overall economy. In recently year, there is a remarkable growth of Hong Kong's air cargo industry's market. It has averaged 11.2% per annum growth since 1992 and exceeded 3.6 million tones in 2006. Hong Kong's new International airport at Chek Lap Kok was opened on 6th July 1998. It is marked a significant improvement in the quality and capacity of Hong Kong's aviation facilities, growth in passenger and cargo traffic. It has strengthened Hong Kong's position as an air cargo industry in the Asia Pacific Region or even in the world. Moreover, under the "One Country, Two System" arrangement, Hong Kong benefits from China's economic development and acts as a major gateway for the country's import and exports. More opportunities will be given to Hong Kong. The rapid growth of economic environment, development in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen and the growing of Mainland China traffic have created a great threat to Hong Kong International Airport. This dissertation aims to provide a review of Hong Kong's air cargo industry, the competitive factor of Hong Kong International Airport as an air cargo industry in the Asia Pacific Region and competition, coordination and co-operation to the Pearl River Delta. It will also suggest strategies for strengthening Hong Kong's air cargo industry as the leading hub and express cargo hub in Asia. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b3963443 Subjects: Aeronautics, Commercial - China - Hong Kong - Freight

Book excerpt: Notwithstanding the recent economic and financial difficulties encountered in the Asia Pacific region, Hong Kong has experienced phenomenal economic growth and physical transformation as the gateway to China during the 1980s and 1990s. This growth enabled the territory to finance studies, real estate developments and mega transport infrastructure projects on such an extensive scale that it has become the envy of the region. So much so that many of the experiences of the transport infrastructure and land use development in the territory become models for other cities in the region. The successes and failures of these plans and projects have thus taken on a significance that go beyond Hong Kong's territorial boundaries. As a result of the dominant role played by an efficient and financially viable public transport system, the prevalence of a low motor vehicle ownership level, and the existence of a compact and high density urban structure, many international experts suggest that Hong Kong has a great deal to offer in the global search for sustainable urban development and transport strategies.

Book Synopsis Air Cargo in Mainland China and Hong Kong by : Anming Zhang
Download or read book Air Cargo in Mainland China and Hong Kong written by Anming Zhang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air traffic and the aviation industry have grown rapidly on the Chinese mainland in the two and a half decades since China's open door policy. Accession to the WTO will further stimulate trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), intensifying the demand for air cargo services. It will also open up the Chinese economy to foreign participation in the transportation and logistics sectors, making these sectors more competitive and efficient. This book provides a systematic and comprehensive study of China's air cargo industry as well as its policy evolution. It covers the sources and destinations of air cargo in mainland China and Hong Kong: whence it comes and where it goes to. The major hubs of the transportation network - Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou - are discussed one by one. The virtual aspects of the network at these hubs in terms of IT applications, preparedness, and needs are examined and compared. Though the subject matter of this book is air cargo, there is considerable coverage of the aviation industry and policy on the mainland and Hong Kong. Changes have been happening so fast there are few books and publications that cover them systematically and comprehensively. Readership includes business executives in airfreight companies, airports and airlines, logistics specialists, aviation university lecturers and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this book provides a systematic approach to transport law as applied in Hong Kong. The book describes the main sources of transport law, jurisdiction and courts, state immunity, and the legal role of transport intermediaries, with detailed reference to maritime law, transport by road, transport by air, transport by rail, and inland navigation. A special chapter is devoted to multimodal transport. Among the elements of transport law considered are the legal status of the vessel; its acquisition, ownership, and registration; vessel liens and mortgages; the position of master and crew; maritime salvage and assistance; marine pollution; collision; and carriage of passengers. Other topics discussed include liability and limitation of liability, charter parties, and transport under bill of lading. Case law, intergovernmental cooperation agreements, and interactions with environmental, tax, and competition law are also covered. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for lawyers handling transport contracts or cases affecting Hong Kong. It will also be welcomed by researchers and academics for its contribution to a field that continues to gain significance in the study of comparative law.
