Book excerpt: This research examines various factors such as gender, age, race, and ethnicity that potentially influence the therapeutic alliance. Literature was examined to support the study showing that stronger therapeutic alliances exist when there is congruence among the therapist and client regarding age, gender, race, and ethnicity. The study measured the therapeutic alliance with a 12-point survey called the Working Alliance Inventory. The score from the survey measured the strength of the therapeutic alliance between the therapist and client. There were 38 clients from LifeWorks, a non-profit organization, who completed the survey assigned to 11 different therapists or counseling interns. Client and therapist demographic information were compared to see if higher alliance existed among age, gender, race, ethnic congruence. Findings showed no statistically significant results but clinical significance was exhibited in similar age and ethnic congruence.
