Book excerpt: This study examines school level differences on different dimensions of teacher-rated parent involvement and school climate while adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, how certified, and number of years teaching. Two hundred twenty-four elementary teachers from existing data and 178 teachers at the middle school level provided information on their perceptions of parent involvement and school climate. Elementary school teachers were recruited from districts located in Texas and California. Middle school teachers were recruited from suburban school districts located in Southeast and Southwest Texas. Teachers rated questions on the parent involvement and school climate surveys as either: strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree. The nine research hypotheses generated for this study were partially supported by the data. As predicted, there was a difference between elementary and middle schools on how they perceive school climate. The data also supported the hypothesis that both Title I and non-Title I middle schools would find parent centers important for getting parents involved. Experience and school level also predicted how teachers perceived school climate. However, contrary to prediction, there were no significant differences between elementary and middle school teachers on how they perceived parent involvement. There also were no significant differences between elementary and middle school on the parent involvement scale when age, ethnicity, gender, school level, experience, and how certified were used as moderating variables. The same can be said for school climate when age, gender, ethnicity, and how certified were used as moderating variables. Several questions were analyzed separately between Title I and non-Title I middle schools and there were no differences for Title I status. Overall, current results indicated similarities between elementary and middle teachers. Similarities also existed between Title I and non-Title I middle school teachers. Explanations, implications for practice, and future research are discussed.

It is also a legal requirement for Title 1 schools. Numerous studies have examined the effects of parent involvement with various ethnic groups, especially with African American and Hispanic groups. This study looks at the effects of a series of twelve parental involvement workshops of three hours each, presented in English, Hmong, Spanish, and Russian languages on the perceptions of parents. These parents were from four ethnic groups: African American, Hispanic, Hmong and Russian-Ukrainian. Through a pre-post survey design, this study examines the perceptions of parents on school to home communication, parental involvement in their children's academic work, and the parents' ability to help their children academically. Also examined are teachers' perceptions of various dimensions of parental involvement using a survey with dimensions which are complementary to those on the parent survey.

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, issues including standardized student testing, teacher certifications, charter schools, and the inequality of funding sources within the traditional public education system have vexed education policy-makers. But in a potentially constructive development, researchers have found that parental involvement is linked to positive attitudes toward education, behavioral performance, and better academic achievement to support the success of a child’s learning in the classroom. Although the research on parental involvement is abundant in the literature, there may be too little attention paid to the perception of teachers toward parental involvement. The purpose of this quantitative study is to analyze the perceptions of teachers based on parental involvement activities guided by Epstein’s Six Typologies of Parental Involvement: (a) teacher perceptions of parents and barriers to parental involvement, (b) communication, (c) teacher expectations for parental involvement programs; (d) building parent/teacher partnerships; and (e) resolutions and resources to improve parental involvement in schools. A 20 item close-ended questionnaire revealed how teachers' perceptions influence parental involvement in middle and high schools. The results of the study add to the validity of Epstein’s’ Six Typologies of parental involvement indicating that parental involvement initiatives and programs need to be more purposeful when it comes to communication and parent/teacher partnerships. By creating awareness in schools and school programs, parents and teachers can further build upon strong relationships that lead to a declared cohesive partnership to further increase student participation at home and in school; ultimately enhancing parental involvement as a significant component in a child’s education.

A combined version of Sheldon and Epstein's Parent Survey of Family and Community Involvement in the Elementary and Middle School Grades and the Parent Survey of Family and Community Involvement in the High School Grades was used to gather data. Descriptive data were used to reveal the results for research questions one, two, and three. A Pearson's r was used to determine the relationships for research questions four, five, and six. Research question 4: What is the nature and strength of the relationship between parents' reported type of involvement activities and their child's educational level (elementary, middle, and high school)?, had a negative correlation of (-.276). For research question 5: What is the nature and strength of the relationship between parent perceptions regarding responsibilities toward parent involvement and their child's educational level (elementary, middle, and high school) had a negative correlation of (-.175). And, for research question 6: What is the nature and strength of the relationship between parent perceptions regarding their ability to help students with school-related work and their child's educational level (elementary, middle, and high school)? had a negative correlation of (-.011). Implications for this study include ways to enhance students' lives. With simple involvement ideas, beliefs are that parents will engage in involvement activities, thus facilitating their student's academic performance. This study serves as a springboard for additional research on parental involvement.

The research included eight teachers (four middle school teachers and four high school teachers) and eight parents (four whose children were in middle school and four whose children were in high school). The researcher interviewed the participants, transcribed their responses, and used grounded theory to analyze the text and develop themes and hypotheses. The researcher found (a) teachers’ perceptions toward parental involvement impacted parents’ willingness to be actively involved in their children’s school-related activities; (b) professional development could mitigate parents’ reluctance by improving teachers’ sense of self-efficacy regarding appropriate interactions with parents; and (c) regularly scheduled workshops could improve parents’ level of involvement if preceded by intentional and personal invitations to parents who were not actively involved or less likely to remain involved.

Schools can cater to the needs of military parents by offering activities that parents prefer when consideration is given to rank and the grade level of the child. The population included soldiers stationed at an Army post in the southeastern part the United States. The target population was military parents with children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The sample population included the military parents with children enrolled in elementary schools near the Army installation. A causal-comparative research design was used to compare mean scores of parents’ perception of effective parent involvement. A modified version of the Effective Parent Involvement: Parent and Teacher Perceptions Survey evaluated the perceptions of effective parent involvement based on five dimensions. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to determine the difference in perception means of officers and enlisted soldiers who have students in a military-affiliated elementary school and perception mean scores according to grade level. Extreme outliers were checked using box plots. Scatterplots were used to check for linear relationships between dimensions. The multivariate homogeneity of covariance test was Box’s M. Levene’s test for homogeneity of variances was used. Cronbach’s alpha was conducted for reliability of the instrument’s dimensions. The findings of this study revealed the lack of parent involvement is not due to military rank or the grade level of the child.

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze of elementary, middle, an high school parents by exploring the perceptions of their own involvement with regard to their (a) race, (b) education level, (c) socio-economic status, and (d) number of children in the household under age 18. Joyce Epstein's six types of parental involvement supported by Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's five levels of parental involvement provided the framework of this study. Findings indicated that while obstacles varied with respect to various parent demographic, the desire for parents to involved still existed. Results from this study not only contribute to current literature connected to parental involvement but also provide urban district stakeholders with further knowledge that might help increase, support, and encourage parental involvement, which has been shown to positively impact student achievement.

Book excerpt: This autoethnography case study examined teacher and parent perceptions of effective parental involvement. In this qualitative study, the researcher took an in-depth exploration of a school's parental involvement program and processes (Creswell, 2003). The perspectives and experiences described by the principal/researcher, parents, and teachers participating in the parental involvement effort at the case study school adds to emerging research on effective and meaningful parental involvement. Narratives of the experiences, descriptions, and thoughts of what worked and what did not work at this school will provide insight and suggestions for other schools in strengthening parental involvement initiatives and add to the understanding of parental involvement processes. This autoethnographic research study provides a deeper understanding of parental involvement through an in-depth examination into the thoughts and feelings of the principal/researcher and school community members, particularly parents and teachers. Three parents and three teachers were purposefully selected from the case study school, located in a high poverty urban school set in the southeast region of the United States of America. Interview participants were selected based on their involvement in parental involvement efforts at the case school, their availability for interview, and their ability to provide detailed and rich narrative about the parental involvement efforts. In addition, participants were intentionally selected to allow multiple voices, perspectives, and opinions to be presented. The interview discussions were guided by a generated list of topics. Transcripts were analyzed, categorized, and summarized into common themes. Results of the research from this case-study has uncovered the following traits. For effective parental involvement to be present in schools, this research suggests parents must: be Positive about their child's education, be Active in their child's education, Value the importance of education, and Encourage student growth. Additional findings show in order for parents to reach their full potential in regards to parental involvement, the schools must be: Promoters of parental involvement, Accessible to parents, supportive of parents by providing Technical assistance, and Hopeful about the process of parental involvement and the potential of student growth. In essence, the research revealed that parents should "P.A.V.E. the Way" and schools should "Clear the P.A.T.H."
