Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the language mastery era to today's focus on communicative proficiency, language teachers and learners in America and Europe have disregarded the importance of the Cognate Lexis and Syntax that English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French, among other languages, share. What are Cognates? From the Latin cognatus (co- 'together' + gnatus, pp. of gnasci, 'to be born'), Cognates are words descended from a common ancestor; that is, words having the same linguistic family or derivation (English), la misma familia lingüística o derivación (Spanish), a mesma família lingüística ou derivação (Portuguese), la stessa famiglia linguistica o derivazione (Italian), la même famille linguistique ou dérivation (French). In other words, cognates are those foreign terms we easily understand because they resemble their equivalents in our mother tongues. As a result, we will find for example, that a thousand English -tion nouns have their exact equivalents as Spanish -ción, Portuguese -ção, Italian -zione, and French -tion. This large number of 'similar words and sounds', contrary to what some language learners and teachers think, is not limited to advantageous coincidences; and contrary to what some linguists think, it is not limited to Latin and Greek derivations present in scientific terms. The statistical data provided by our extensive research support the assertion that cognates represent at least 25% of the unique English written words met by Romance language speakers, and vice versa. One of the several outcomes of this research project is The Dictionary of Cognates (DOC), which features 20,000 English-Spanish cognate words + 25,000 frequent cognate collocations. All these words were selected manually from several renowned dictionaries keeping to a minimum infrequent technical, scientific or historical cognate terms. The development of both works, The Dictionary of Cognates and our introduction book on Cognate Linguistics, was based on practicality and frequency rather than on exhaustiveness. Although these books have been introduced in their English - Spanish versions, The Cognate Project as a whole also refers to and applies to Portuguese, Italian, French, Catalan and Romanian. Samples of Portuguese, Italian and French cognates are available at cognates.org, the project’s support site. While reading this book, you will realize that cognate words, collocations and phrases are not regarded as new or foreign by your mind given that they are immediately and effortlessly recognized and comprehended. Actually, our mind does not seem to read foreign words but their cognates in our mother tongue. Even before starting learning a new cognate language, or better said, even without the need of being engaged in the process of learning a new cognate language, the Immediate and Effortless Recognition of Cognates (IERC) is a pleasurable experience. In summary, we can claim that the Cognate Lexis and Syntax shared by certain related languages have not been clearly identified as one of the most important foundations for foreign language acquisition. The teaching and learning approaches and methods available may have overestimated for long the time and effort needed by cognate speakers to learn cognate languages. Additionally, cognates are innate motivators; there is nothing better than comprehensible language to encourage learning and language production. We have disregarded for too long this fantastic linguistic asset of ours; but that is over now. Welcome to the Cognate World.

Book excerpt: "The research question addressed in this capstone was: are Native Spanish Speakers learning English aware of cognates and false friends within a text? This capstone details theories of language learner errors regarding false friends and discusses results of previous studies in the field such as Chacón Beltrán, Holmes and Guerra Ramos, Frantzen, and Nassaji. Results of prior studies have shown that cognate awareness is a natural strategy for English learners, but false friends pose problems. Participants completed four assessments which demonstrated their awareness, metacognition, and their lexical knowledge of words. The researcher concluded that Native Spanish Speakers were aware of cognates and false friends within a text, but revealed that differentiation between words was a challenge. Results also suggest that participants were able to: identify words, effectively think about their word choices, define known words independently, and decipher word meaning using the context when provided with possible definitions."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other vocabulary guides that require the rote memorization of literally thousands of words, this book starts from the premise that using the etymological connections between Spanish and English words--their common derivations from Latin, Greek, and other languages--is the most effective way to acquire and remember vocabulary. This approach is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced students. Teachers of the language will also find much material that can be used to help motivate their students to acquire, and retain, Spanish vocabulary. Spanish Vocabulary is divided into four parts and four annexes: Part I provides background material on the origins of Spanish and begins the process of presenting Spanish vocabulary. Part II presents "classical" Spanish vocabulary--words whose form (in both Spanish and English) is nearly unchanged from Latin and Greek. Part III deals with "popular" Spanish vocabulary, which underwent significant changes in form (and often meaning) during the evolution from Latin to Spanish. A number of linguistic patterns are identified that will help learners recognize and remember new vocabulary. Part IV treats a wide range of themes, including words of Germanic and Arabic origin, numbers, time, food and animals, the family, the body, and politics. Annex A: Principal exceptions to the "Simplified Gender Rule" Annex B: 700 words whose relations, if any, to English words are not immediately obvious Annex C: -cer verbs and related words Annex D: 4,500 additional words, either individually or in groups, with English correspondences

Book excerpt: "With articles on Spanglish and Spanish loan words in English as well as Southeast Asian refugees and World Englishes, this encyclopedia has a broad scope that will make it useful in academic and large public libraries serving those involved in teaching and learning in multiple languages. Also available as an ebook." — Booklist The simplest definition of bilingual education is the use of two languages in the teaching of curriculum content in K–12 schools. There is an important difference to keep in mind between bilingual education and the study of foreign languages as school subjects: In bilingual education, two languages are used for instruction, and the goal is academic success in and through the two languages. The traditional model of foreign-language study places the emphasis on the acquisition of the languages themselves. The field of bilingual education is dynamic and even controversial. The two volumes of this comprehensive, first-stop reference work collect and synthesize the knowledge base that has been well researched and accepted in the United States and abroad while also taking note of how this topic affects schools, research centers, legislative bodies, advocacy organizations, and families. The Encyclopedia of Bilingual Education is embedded in several disciplines, including applied linguistics, politics, civil rights, historical events, and of course, classroom instruction. This work is a compendium of information on bilingual education and related topics in the United States with select international contributors providing global insight onto the field. Key Features Explores in a comprehensive, non-technical way the intricacies of this subject from multiple perspectives: its history, policy, classroom practice, instructional design, and research bases Shows connections between bilingual education and related subjects, such as linguistics, education equity issues, socio-cultural diversity, and the nature of demographic change in the United States Documents the history of bilingual education in the last half of the 20th century and summarizes its roots in earlier periods Discusses important legislation and litigation documents Key Themes · Family, Community, and Society · History · Instructional Design · Languages and Linguistics · People and Organizations · Policy Evolution · Social Science Perspectives · Teaching and Learning The Encyclopedia of Bilingual Education is a valuable resource for those who wish to understand the polemics associated with this field as well as its technical details. This will be an excellent addition to any academic library.
