Book Synopsis Correlation Between Fatigue Crack Propagation and Low Cycle Fatigue Properties by : Saurindranath Majumdar
Download or read book Correlation Between Fatigue Crack Propagation and Low Cycle Fatigue Properties written by Saurindranath Majumdar and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack propagation is treated as a succession of fatigue crack initiation events. The cyclic stress and strain experienced by each element ahead of the crack tip is computed by means of an elastic-plastic analysis of the crack tip region. The attendant cumulative fatigue damage is computed in terms of low cycle fatigue properties of the metal. This permits a correlation to be made between the fatigue crack propagation resistance of a metal and its resistance to fatigue as measured on smooth specimens. Fatigue crack propagation data for eight steels from Barsom's work are compared with predictions from the analysis using low cycle fatigue properties and values of rho* based on Gurland's study of the microstructural elements responsible for strengthening in steels.
Book Synopsis Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels by : Saurindranath Majumdar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a previous report, a fatigue crack propagation model was analyzed by considering fatigue crack propagation as a sequence of fatigue crack initiation events. This permitted correlation to be made between the fatigue crack growth resistance and low cycle fatigue properties of metals. Four steels were tested for low cycle fatigue behavior at the University of Illinois. Good correlation was obtained between the theoretically predicted crack propagation rate based on the measured low cycle fatigue properties of the four metals and experimentally observed crack propagation rates that were reported in the literature. Further, good estimates of crack propagation rates can be obtained on the basis of static tensile properties of the metals alone where cyclic properties are not available. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to design for optimum maintenance capabilities and minimize the repair time Design for Maintainability offers engineers a wide range of tools and techniques for incorporating maintainability into the design process for complex systems. With contributions from noted experts on the topic, the book explains how to design for optimum maintenance capabilities while simultaneously minimizing the time to repair equipment. The book contains a wealth of examples and the most up-to-date maintainability design practices that have proven to result in better system readiness, shorter downtimes, and substantial cost savings over the entire system life cycle, thereby, decreasing the Total Cost of Ownership. Design for Maintainability offers a wealth of design practices not covered in typical engineering books, thus allowing readers to think outside the box when developing maintainability design requirements. The book's principles and practices can help engineers to dramatically improve their ability to compete in global markets and gain widespread customer satisfaction. This important book: Offers a complete overview of maintainability engineering as a system engineering discipline Includes contributions from authors who are recognized leaders in the field Contains real-life design examples, both good and bad, from various industries Presents realistic illustrations of good maintainability design principles Provides discussion of the interrelationships between maintainability with other related disciplines Explores trending topics in technologies Written for design and logistics engineers and managers, Design for Maintainability is a comprehensive resource containing the most reliable and innovative techniques for improving maintainability when designing a system or product.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this work are (1) to make clear the behavior of high-temperature low-cycle fatigue (LCF) crack propagation, (2) to verify the applicability of the J-integral to the fracture mechanics equations of crack propagation rates, (3) to derive two types of LCF life laws of smooth specimens based on the two types of crack propagation equations (i.e., cycle-dependent and time-dependent), (4) to show a resemblance to or a difference from the Manson-Coffin equation and the strain-range partitioning equations, and (5) to characterize the cycle-dependent and time-dependent fatigue laws. The effectiveness of the proposed failure-life equations was examined using experimental data on isothermal and thermal fatigue of smooth specimens.
Book Synopsis Combined-Mode Low-Cycle Fatigue Crack Growth Under Torsional Loading by : WW. Wilkening
Download or read book Combined-Mode Low-Cycle Fatigue Crack Growth Under Torsional Loading written by WW. Wilkening and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faults or other disturbances in an electrical distribution system can potentially feed back to the turbine-generator and produce large-amplitude torsional oscillations in the turbine-generator shaft. These transient torques, in combination with gravity-induced and misalignment-induced bending stresses in the shaft, can give rise to significant combined-mode fatigue crack growth phenomena. Prediction of the fatigue damage or of the growth rate of existing flaws under these complex loading conditions has been the subject of numerous investigations in the past. The work described here focuses upon the development of a correlation of the experimentally measured combined-mode fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) with a suitable fracture mechanics characterizing parameter.
