Well reconsidered the main existence theorems of theta functions and found natural proofs for them. These are contained in Conforto: Abelsche Funktionen und algebraische Geometrie, Springer (1956); Siegel: Analytic functions of several complex variables, Lect. Notes, I.A.S. (1948/49); Well: Theoremes fondamentaux de la theorie des fonctions theta, Sem. Bourbaki, No. 16 (1949). The complete account of Weil's method appeared in his book of 1958 [20]. The next important achievement was the theory of compacti fication of the quotient variety of Siegel's upper-half space by a modular group. There are many ways to compactify the quotient variety; we are talking about what might be called a standard compactification. Such a compactification was obtained first as a Hausdorff space by I. Satake in "On the compactification of the Siegel space", J. Ind. Math. Soc. 20, 259-281 (1956), and as a normal projective variety by W.L. Baily in 1958 [1]. In 1957/58, H. Book excerpt: The theory of functional equations has been developed in a rapid and productive way in the second half of the Twentieth Century. First of all, this is due to the fact that the mathematical applications raised the investigations of newer and newer types of functional equations. At the same time, the self development of this theory was also very fruitful. This can be followed in many monographs that treat and discuss the various methods and approaches. These developments were also essentially influenced by a number jour nals, for instance, by the Publicationes Mathematicae Debrecen (founded in 1953) and by the Aequationes Mathematicae (founded in 1968), be cause these journals published papers from the field of functional equa tions readily and frequently. The latter journal also publishes the yearly report of the International Symposia on Functional Equations and a comprehensive bibliography of the most recent papers. At the same time, there are periodically and traditionally organized conferences in Poland and in Hungary devoted to functional equations and inequali ties. In 2000, the 38th International Symposium on Functional Equations was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Debrecen in Noszvaj, Hungary. The report about this meeting can be found in Aequationes Math. 61 (2001), 281-320.

This meeting pro vided the unique opportunity for USA and USSR participants to directly interact personally and scientifically with each other. This interaction was of great impor not only for the individuals involved but also for the science of nonlinear tance phenomena in general. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that this exchange should continue, and it was decided to have the next meeting in the USA in 1981. Unfortunately, due to the political situation at that time, the second meeting in the USA never materialized. However, in 1983, the Soviet scientists organized in Kiev a second Workshop. This second meeting was again quite successful. Similar meetings, with growing success were organized at Kiev in 1987, and 1989. It should be noted that 405 participants from 22 countries participated at the fourth Kiev workshop on Nonlinear and Turbulent Processes. The Chainnan of this workshop was V. Zakharov, who has also been a co-chainnan of all the previous workshops.
