Book excerpt: Denture bases are commonly made from acrylic resins, which were introduced by Dr. Walter Wright back in 1937. Among these, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most commonly used. PMMA material is mostly processed by wet heat and compression molding techniques, which deliver dentures with acceptable mechanical properties. However, certain dimensional changes are known to occur in acrylic resin during or after its processing. These changes hold clinical significance because for better adaptation to oral tissues, denture base material must have dimensional accuracy during and after its processing. However, inaccuracies tend to occur due to unavoidable changes during fabrication such as thermal expansion on heating, contraction on cooling and polymerization shrinkage. The purported significance of this study is to find out the most suitable cooling procedure for achieving maximum dimensional accuracy following a standard heating cycle. This will lead to the fabrication of a denture which will have better retention, support, stability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resin materials are broadly used in dentistry for almost all indications, and they will gain even more importance in the future. Especially the increasing performance and efficiency of the CAD/CAM technology and 3D-printing open possibilities to use resins which were not used up to now in dentistry. Besides dentists, dental students or dental technicians, there are many other specialists such as researchers, material scientists, industrial developers or experts of adjoining professional disciplines who are technically engaged in dental resins. The "Expert Level" is the third book of the series "Dental Resins - Material Science & Technology". The "Expert Level" includes all information and data presented in the "Basic Level" and "Advanced Level" of this series, but enormously expands the knowledge base. From a total database of 8.198 references, 1.707 were selected and used for this textbook. It comprises more than 1,000 manuscript pages, 384 figures and 124 tables. The "Expert Level" describes very accurately and comprehensively all details of the material science and technology of dental polymers and composites. Furthermore, their production methods and applications are discussed in detail. Therefore, this book is a unique treatise of the complete present knowledge about dental resins and dental resin composites. This includes the discussion of the - raw/starting materials together with the explanation and presentation of their chemical structures and properties, their CAS Numbers and the names of the manufacturers. - amounts of the raw/starting materials usually used to formulate the finished products. - important material and toxicological properties of the starting materials and the finished products. - detailed description of the production processes of essential starting materials such as the syntheses of essential monomers, the silanization of inorganic fillers or the manufacturing of unfilled and filled splinter polymers. - detailed description of the formulation and the properties of the finished products. Furthermore, for many commercial endproducts rather detailed formulations as well as the exact production processes are described. All ISO standards that are relevant for dental resins are listed, too. Furthermore, many essential methods to test the mechanical, chemical and toxicological properties are also presented and explained. The "Expert Level" enables every scientist with a good chemical knowledge not only to understand how dental polymers function, but also to develop new and improved products.

Book excerpt: Traditional dental materials such as metals and ceramics have a number of disadvantages such as cost and the significant damage caused in grinding to make space for such reconstructions. Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) are a novel group of dental materials characterized by fibrous fillers that are being increasingly used in place of traditional prosthodontic materials. They allow fabrication of minimally invasive, lightweight, durable and biocompatible restorations. This book will provide clinicians and students with theoretical and clinical guidelines to use the FRCs for dental applications. The book begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of FRCs in dentistry. Further chapters cover the treatment possibilities, fabrication and application procedures of FRCs, followed by information on care and maintenance. Explores the mechanism of function of fibre-reinforced composites Presents comprehensive information on the expanding field of fibre-reinforced composites and their increasing use in dentistry

Abstract: ABSTRACT Poly(methylmethacrylate) is the most commonly used denture base polymer and it is generally considered desirable that the resin is reinforced. In addition to enhanced mechanical properties, improvement of dimensional stability can also contribute to the success of denture prostheses. Techniques for reinforcing complete dentures with highly drawn linear polyethylene (HDLPE) fibres were successfully developed using standard dental laboratory equipment. All three forms of reinforcement, continuous parallel, woven and chopped fibres, were satisfactorily incorporated into the bases of complete dentures. The linear dimensional change of permanent heat-cured denture bases during processing and re-processing were studied using fine reference crosses. Measurements were also made for the spaces between the posterior border of maxillary dentures and their stone casts. HDLPE fibre reduces the processing shrinkage of both maxillary and mandibular denture bases with woven mats giving the largest reduction of dimensional change. Both reinforced and un-reinforced dentures showed similar shrinkage on re-processing. Monitoring dimensional stability of dentures in service revealed that all types of dentures were stable. Hence, the improvement in dimensional change of fibre-reinforced denture during the first curing cycle is maintained throughout. This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statement of the Problem: Despite its popularity as a denture-base material, poly-methyl methacrylate exhibits inherently low resistance to impact and fatigue failure. This is reflected in the analyses of the prevalence of denture fracture which suggests that prosthesis failure remains an unsolved problem. Consequently, various approaches to improve the physical and mechanical properties of denture-base polymers have been proposed. These include incorporation of solid metal forms and various types of fibers to provide reinforcement to fracture prone areas. In recent years there has been considerable interest in glass fiber reinforcement of polymeric denture resins. Partial fiber reinforcement using glass fiber has been shown to improve the mechanical properties of removable prostheses. However, adequate impregnation of fibers often requires the use of excessive methyl methacrylate monomer which has a deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of the fiber composite material. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of glass fiber polysulphone composite reinforcement on the flexural characteristics of two commonly used denture-base polymers. Materials and methods: Prefabricated E-glass fiber polysulphone composite rods,?? 3mm in diameter, with a continuous, unidirectional, non-silanized fiber concentration of?? 55 vol %, were employed as strengtheners. The reinforcement was incorporated axial to the neutral axis in standardized cylindrical heat polymerizing conventional and high impact resin test specimens 6mm in diameter and 28mm in length. The two reinforced pattern groups (n = 10) were compared with unreinforced resin control groups. A three point loading test was performed in air after storage of the specimens in water at 37ʻC for a period of 8 weeks. The following values were measured : flexural modulus and flexural strength. The obtained data were subjected to relevant statistical analysis. Results: The flexural modulus of the glass fiber polysulphone reinforcement was 14,106 MPa and the flexural strength 546.6 MPa. The flexural modulus of conventional denture-base resin was 1746 MPa, reinforcement increased it to 2328 MPa, and the flexural strength increased from 164 MPa to 209 MPa. The flexural modulus of high impact polymer was 1684 MPa and reinforcement increased it to 2067 MPa. The flexural strength was increased from 171 MPa to 242 MPa with reinforcement. Statistical analysis using t test showed that reinforcement affected the flexural modulus and flexural strength of polymer brands (p
