Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of Philosophy These concepts, then, or notions which we frame to serve as shorthand expressions for certain facts, or aspects of reality, come to us with so little labor on our part, that we often are tempted to regard them as self-evident, and certain to present themselves as the manifest points of view whenever men stop to think. But a little examina tion will show that this is a mistake. We are the heir of all the ages in our intellectual life, and so can utilize the results of those who have gone before us. In their 'origin, however, these results were reached in no such simple way as their obviousness to us would seem to suggest, but were wrought laboriously with pain and travail. It is a com mon experience, after we have arrived at the solution of some problem that has been engaging us, to be struck with wonder that we should so long have been baffled by it, when in reality the matter is so plain yet, as a matter of fact, it did bafl'le us. Now every point of view from which man regards the world, is thus at some period of his history a hard-won acquisition. It may stand for a truth - an obvious truth even - when it comes to be recog nized. But the mere existence of a truth is nothing to us, until we have brought it into connection with the current of our own experience and knowledge; and this requires special circumstances and conditions. Book excerpt: AUTHORITATIVE AND ACCESSIBLE, THIS LANDMARK WORK IS THE FIRST SINGLE-VOLUME HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY SHARED FOR DECADES 'A cerebrally enjoyable survey, written with great clarity and touches of wit' Sunday Times The story of philosophy is an epic tale: an exploration of the ideas, views and teachings of some of the most creative minds known to humanity. But there has been no comprehensive history of this great intellectual journey since 1945. Intelligible for students and eye-opening for philosophy readers, A. C. Grayling covers with characteristic clarity and elegance subjects like epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and the philosophy of mind, as well as the history of debates in these areas, through the ideas of celebrated philosophers as well as less well-known influential thinkers. The History of Philosophy takes the reader on a journey from the age of the Buddha, Confucius and Socrates. Through Christianity's dominance of the European mind to the Renaissance and Enlightenment. On to Mill, Nietzsche, Sartre, then the philosophical traditions of India, China and the Persian-Arabic world. And finally, into philosophy today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Philosophy The purpose of this book is to trace the history of philosophy in Great Britain from the time when it began to be written in the English language until the end of the Victorian era. There are two ways of writing the history of philosophy. One of them sets out from the standpoint of philosophy as conceived by the writer; the other from that of the philosophers themselves. On the former method the fundamental problems of philosophy will be presented at the outset, and each step taken towards their definition and solution will then be noted; whatever is irrelevant to the main issue will be left out of sight, however important it may have been in the minds of some of the philosophers. On the latter method the subject will be approached as it appeared to each philosopher in turn, and the presen tation of definite concepts and clear issues will emerge gradually as the story progresses. Each of these methods has its own advantages and its own dangers. The former concentrates upon the essential, but it is liable to miss historical proportion by stressing certain features and overlooking others. The latter keeps in close touch with the documents, but care is needed to prevent the meaning of the whole from being obscured by details. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Philosophy Having composed and published brief text-books on Logic, Metaphysics and Ethics, which have obtained a considerable circulation in Colleges and Academies, the author of this little volume has frequently been urged to complete the series by adding an equally brief synop sis of the History of Philosophy. Many learned works on this subject are before the public; but they are mostly in foreign languages or written in a spirit alien, if not hostile, to Catholic thought. And yet, as the Catholic Church stands alone in its permanent strength and grandeur among the hundreds of religions in the world, so too its Philosophy is preeminent among the countless speculations of ancient and modern times. There is, however, this difference, that the Church's infallibility in teaching religion is a supernatural endow ment, given to it and maintained in it by its Divine Founder, Jesus Christ; whereas Catholic philosophers, like all others, derive their doctrines directly from hu man reason, but they are usually guarded from impor tant errors by their knowledge of Revelation. Book excerpt: Philosophy of History is an essential introduction to a vast body of writing about history, from classical Greece and Rome to the modern world. M.C. Lemon maps out key debates and central concepts of philosophy of history, placing principal thinkers in the context of their times and schools of thought. Lemon explains the crucial differences between speculative philosophy as an enquiry into the content of history, and analytic philosophy of history as relating to the methods of history. The first two parts of the book trace each of these traditions, whereas the third part revisits both in the light of recent contributions to the discipline. This guide provides a comprehensive survey of historical thought since ancient times. Its clear terminology and lucid argument will make it an invaluable source for students and teachers alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Greek Philosophy On the other hand, however, these views do not remain confined to their first authors, they spread and maintain themselves in schools, and by means of writings; a scientific tradition is formed, the later members learn from the earlier, and through them are stimulated to the completion, continuation, and cor rection of their results, to the asking of new questions, and the search after new answers and methods. The systems of philosophy, however peculiar and self dependent they may be, thus appear as the members of a larger historical interconnection; in respect to this alone can they be perfectly understood; the farther we follow it, the more the individual becomes united to a whole of historical development, and the problem arises not merely of explaining this whole by means of the particular moments conditioning it, but. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Greek Philosophy The main purpose which I have had in View in writing this book has been to present an account of Greek philosophy which, within strict limits of brevity, shall be at once authentic and interesting - autfientz°c, as being based on the original works themselves, and not on any secondary sources; interesting, as presenting to the ordinary English reader, in language freed as far as possible from technicality and abstruseness, the great thoughts of the greatest men of antiquity on questions of permanent significance and value. There has been no attempt to shirk the really philosophic problems which these men tried in their day to solve; but I have endeavoured to show, by a sympathetic treat ment of them, that these problems were no mere wars of words, but that in fact the philosophers of twenty-four centuries ago were dealing with exactly.
