Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the landslides of 2005-06, Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., approved establishment of a working group to review the land-use-regulation process in Utah, recommend improvements, and identify how and where the State could assist. The Governor's Geologic Hazards Working Group (GHWG) was established in 2006 and met regularly from September 2006 through June 2007. This report highlights some of the 2005-06 landslides, reviews the establishment and activities of the GHWG, and presents the GHWG?s recommendations for reducing losses from geologic hazards.

Book Synopsis Overcoming Barriers by : Craig Taylor
Download or read book Overcoming Barriers written by Craig Taylor and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph studies seven large lifeline organizations that have undertaken significant seismic improvement programs. In spite of often-cited barriers to natural hazards risk reduction, these organizations demonstrate a variety of ways to start and sustain risk-reduction programs. In these economically and politically robust organizations, top-level managers and high-level inside technical seismic advocates learned from the damage done by past earthquakes to their systems or similar systems and from research and educational programs. Then, each group developed an overall view of its system's earthquake vulnerabilities and devised adaptable, incremental seismic implementation programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Mitigation Directorate with 25 recommended tasks that should be undertaken through the agency's Existing Buildings Program (EBP) in the coming years. The EBP's expanded but continuing mission in seismic rehabilitation is to limit fatalities, life-threatening injuries, & property & economic losses from earthquakes by increasing the number of seismically resistant buildings in all areas of identified earthquake risk. Identifies 4 objectives & 25 tasks to help make our building stock less vulnerable to earthquake damage. Seeks to provide the continuity necessary for an effective Existing Buildings Program.

Book Synopsis Geologic Hazards of Monroe City, Sevier County, Utah by : Richard E. Giraud
Download or read book Geologic Hazards of Monroe City, Sevier County, Utah written by Richard E. Giraud and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2004 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologic hazards are naturally occurring processes that present a risk to life and property. This report provides information for the Monroe City area, in Utah's central Sevier Valley, to reduce losses from geologic hazards. Surficial-geologic mapping provides the basis on which individual geologic hazards are identified and mapped. Alluvial-fan and basin-fill deposits cover most of the map area. Other deposits consist of colluvium, artificial fill, spring travertine, and volcanic bedrock. The geologic hazards maps show where hazards may exist. The maps should be used to inform citizens and developers of potential risks and for local government officials to make prudent land-use planning decisions. The maps are general, and site-specific studies are needed to demonstrate site suitability prior to development. Typical risk-reduction methods for these geologic hazards generally include avoidance or engineering design to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.
