Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man curious about his future goes to an astrologer. The astrologer prophesies that his wife will meet with an accident. Destiny decides to test whether the astrologer will remain true to his craft even though it entails ruin. Will the astrologer pass the test? A sculptor creates a very beautiful statue. The statue is infected with the praise hurled upon it. Is beauty a source of inspiration or cause of destruction? Or are creation and destruction the two great imposters? There is theft in the house of a businessman. An engineering student confesses to the police, yet the investigation starts. There is a dilapidated medieval fort where poltergeist phenomena are reported. Six friends visit the fort, some out of curiosity and some out of compulsion. What happens inside the fort will haunt the ghosts for eternity. Stories that are uninhibited by the constraints of grammar, by the considerations of syntactic propriety, by the rigidities of morals and messages, is a dream destination. We believe that a story belongs more to a reader than its writer. We have tried our best to refrain ourselves from force-feeding the reader with matters that are too peripheral to matter, in spite of the many temptations to do so and have made naive attempts to act as facilitators and allow the reader to paint his own environs and at times, draw his own conclusions . This book is more a sincere than a scholarly attempt to do this.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Goldstick's Reason, Truth, and Reality addresses two questions: what sort of world do we inhabit? and what moral obligations do we have? To answer the questions Goldstick mounts a bold contemporary defense of pre-Kantian rationalism. Basing consideration upon a characterization of reason in its deductive, inductive, and ethical functioning, he asks what must hold good for reason so characterized to be a dependable guide to truth. The conclusions Goldstick draws are threefold. First of all, the argument points to continuous deterministic causality throughout space and time. In the second place, a case is made for universal impermanence. And thirdly, Goldstick claims to establish a basis for the right within a version of utilitarianism supporting the maximum long-term promotion of people's interests. The discussion takes in such traditional rationalist themes as aprioricity, conceivability, and antiscepticism, and such analytic topics as belief-and-desire, truthvaluelessness, and epistemic reliability.

Book excerpt: "Since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, the United States and Mexico have been inextricably linked. The blending of the American and Mexican cultures has enriched both nations. Through a partnership to promote wider access to literary voices of Mexican artists in the U.S. and American writers in Mexico, the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Embassy in Mexico, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico have joined together to support a program of anthology publications and public outreach activities. The two-volume set-Lineas conectadas: nueva poesia de los Estados Unidos and Connecting Lines: New Poetry from Mexico-is the first installment in the series. With definitive translations by leading writers and scholars, these dual volumes offer a glimpse into the beauty of the Mexican and the American experience through the microscopic lens of poetry. Whether read for personal pleasure or classroom study, Lineas conectadas and Connecting Lines are a must-read for anyone curious of our ever-increasing multicultural identity."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Attempting to reconcile the law's need for workable rules of evidence with the views of scientific validity and reliability. What is scientific knowledge and when is it reliable? These deceptively simple questions have been the source of endless controversy. In 1993, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling on the use of scientific evidence in federal courts. Federal judges may admit expert scientific evidence only if it merits the label scientific knowledge. The testimony must be scientifically reliable and valid. This book is organized around the criteria set out in the 1993 ruling. Following a general overview, the authors look at issues of fit--whether a plausible theory relates specific facts to the larger factual issues in contention; philosophical concepts such as the falsifiability of scientific claims; scientific error; reliability in science, particularly in fields such as epidemiology and toxicology; the meaning of scientific validity; peer review and the problem of boundary setting; and the risks of confusion and prejudice when presenting science to a jury. The book's conclusion attempts to reconcile the law's need for workable rules of evidence with the views of scientific validity and reliability that emerge from science and other disciplines.

The first six books are called the "Egyptian texts" and were penned by Egyptian academicians following the Hebrew Exodus. The last five books are called the "Celtic texts" and were penned by Celtic priests following the death of Jesus. Several accounts describe an object in orbit around our sun sun called the "Destroyer," which the Celtic authors call the "Frightener." According to recently translated Sumerian texts, this object (also known as Nibiru or Planet X) is in a 3600-year orbit around our sun, and The Kolbrin Bible warns us of its imminent return and of yet another Biblical tribulation." -- Amazon.com.

The introduction provides an informative overview of folklore, its purpose in world cultures and in contemporary society and popular culture. Following this, the main sections of the book are arranged by tale type, covering wonder tales, hero tales, tales of kindness repaid and hope and redemption, and finally tales of fools and wise people. Each section begins by comparing the tales cross-culturally, explaining similarities and differences in the folkloric narratives. Tales from diverse cultures are then presented, introduced, and retold in a highly readable fashion.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling first novel in the Bone Season series, an epic fantasy about a young woman fighting to use her powers and stay alive in an England entirely different from our own. In 2059, Scion has taken over most of the world's cities, promising safety for all the citizens it deems worthy and wiping out clairvoyants wherever it can find them. Paige Mahoney, though, is a clairvoyant--and a criminal just for existing. Paige is determined to fight Scion's power, and as part of the Seven Seals, Paige has found a use for her powers: she scouts for information by breaking into others' minds as they dream. But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly-as soldiers in their army. Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives. The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine-a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Book excerpt: A plucky, sardonic con artist must “prophesize” her way out of peril—discovering along the way that power and politics are nothing more than stories sold as truth. Kalyna’s family has the Gift: the ability to see the future. For generations, they traveled the four kingdoms of the Tetrarchia selling their services as soothsayers. Every child of their family is born with this Gift—everyone except Kalyna. So far, Kalyna has used informants and trickery to falsify prophecies for coin, scrounging together a living for her deteriorating father and cruel grandmother. But Kalyna’s reputation for prophecy precedes her, and poverty turns to danger when she is pressed into service by the spymaster to Rotfelsen. Kalyna is to use her “Gift” to uncover threats against Rotfelsen’s king, her family held hostage to ensure her good behavior. But politics are devious; the king’s enemies abound, and Kalyna’s skills for investigation and deception are tested to the limit. Worse, the conspiracy she uncovers points to a larger threat, not only to Rotfelsen but to the Tetrarchia itself. Kalyna is determined to protect her family and newfound friends, but as she is drawn deeper into palace intrigue, she can no longer tell if her manipulations are helping prevent the Tetrarchia’s destruction—or if her lies will bring about its prophesized downfall.
