Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Lithuanian Nation: And Its Present National Aspirations I, whom three Presidents of the United States - Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Taft and President Wilson, have trusted to represent the American people in a little nation, that of Denmark, because both by inheritance and conviction I believed that democracy could only be true to its principles when it so applied them that these little nations might be free to develop their own culture - have a right to speak for Lithuania as a nation, and to voice the belief that, in the great reckoning which the world awaits to-day, the demand of this most oppressed of little countries shall receive the tenderest sympathy and the most practical support from her just and generous brethren, the American people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lithuanian-Polish Dispute: Second Assembly of the League of Nations at Geneva 1921 Lithuania, a country still comparatively little known, notwithstanding the striking vicissitudes of her history, has appeared again in the family of free nations. An age-long mystery, something significant clings to a people who, amidst the ocean of Slavs and Teutons, have preserved up to the present day their ethnical unity, unique language, and peculiar ancient civilisation. Race and Language. Numbering about four millions, the Lithuanian race represents a survival of an entirely separate and distinct branch of the Aryan family, and is related neither to Slavs nor Teutons, being far more ancient than either. Lithuanians are believed to be autochthonous to the Baltic shores, the territory they still occupy to-day. It may be noted that it was probably the Lithuanians who gave its name to the Baltic Sea, the word Baltic meaning "white" in Lithuanian. The Lithuanian language, professorships in the instruction of which have been established in many universities, is as different from Polish, Russian, or German, as is English from Greek. So well have the primitive characteristics of this language been preserved that even Lithuanian immigrants in Scotland or the United States still mould their speech in the fashion of Homer's heroes, using a dual number besides the singular and plural, and employing many other archaic forms which have been lost in other languages. Benjamin D. Dwight, in "Modern Philology" has written: - "This (the Lithuanian tongue) is a language of great value to the philologist. It is the most antique in its forms of all living languages of the world, and most akin in its substance and spirit to the primeval Sanskrit. It is also at the same time so much like the Latin and the Greek as to occupy the ear of the etymologist, and in the multitude of words not otherwise understood, in the place of the interpreter, with its face fixed on Latin and its hand pointing backwards to the Sanskrit. It is like a universal interpreter, seeming to have the gift of tongues, since its tongue is so greatly like the rest in preserving the purse of prime model, from which they are all corrupt derivatives, as to seem, in whatever language you hear, the chime of that language, ringing loud and clear from ancient time." No less an authority than Elise Reclus, in "Geographic Universelle," states: - "If the value of a nation in the total sum of humanity were to be measured by the beauty of its language, the Lithuanian ought to have the first place among the nations of Europe." And the famous philosopher, Emmanuel Kant, in his preface to Mielxe's Dictionary says: - "She (Lithuania) must be preserved, for her tongue possesses the key which opens the enigmas not only of philology, but also of history." Early Struggles with Teutonic Knights. Early history finds the Lithuanian nation continually fighting against Slavonic invasion. The chief body of the European peninsula has been in history the field of the growth of the German Empire, which is separated from the plateau of Great Russia by a very characteristic isthmus, containing the basins of seven great rivers the Oder, the Vistula, the Niemen, the Duna, the Dniester, the Bob and the Dnieper. This isthmus between Western and Eastern Europe is one geographical whole, very different in every respect from the country farther east. There is a smaller difference in climate between Breslau and Kieff, than between Kieff and Moscow, and also in every other respect the country west of the Dnieper has belonged for centuries to Western Europe, while beyond the Dnieper began already Asia with its despotic political formations, where the subject populations have no active participation ln the decisions of their rulers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lithuanians of Cleveland The territory included under the term Lithuania depends upon the time of which one speaks. In the fifteenth century the kingdom extended from the Baltic Sea at Polangen and the mouth of the Niemen river to the Black Sea, and from the Bug river on the west to the Oka on the east. Gradually the political unit was reduced in size until today without recognized political entity we can speak only of the territory in which live those who use the Lithuanian language. In this sense it now includes the entire province of Kovno, Vilna, the part of Grodno north of the Niemen, Suvalki, Courland and, the north-eastern part of eastern Prussia. Closely akin and usually classified with them are the Letts, a people living in Courland, Livonia, Vitebsk, and a remnant of the old Prussians living east of the mouth of the Vistula. The Lithuanians are a branch of the indo-european race quite distinct from the Scandinavians, Slavs or Germans by whom they are surrounded. Their language shows a marked similarity to the Sanskrit. From a careful comparison of the pre-historic skulls unearthed in this region with the Lithuanians of today, it would seem that they had been in Western Europe many centuries before the Slavs or Germans migrated from their Asiatic homes. Six hundred years ago the southern Lithuanians came under Prus sian domination. In 1569 by the Convention of Lublin the fortunes of the kingdom were inextricably merged with those of Poland. The dual monarchy ostensibly at least, became entirely Polish and Lithuania seemed to have disappeared. It was a bloodless political conquest, but it did not essentially change the genius or aspirations of this freedom-loving people. At the close of the eighteenth century, with the third partition of Poland by its avaricious neighbors, Lithuania passed into the hands of Russia, and to Europeans and Americans became nothing more than a memory. Her government down to the pettiest ofl'ieers was Russian. Her statutes were abolished; the size of the leasehold of her people was limited to one hundred and sixty acres; lectures and meetings were prohibited; even the language itself was barred and the Russian characters substituted for the Latin. Lithuanian commerce was discouraged and great tracts of country were sold to Russian colonists. The hardest blow of all was the suppression of the press in 1864, so that the people had to rely on what literature could be smuggled in from Germany and America. But such literature did come in, as evidenced by the fact that the Lithuanian provinces have shown a smaller percentage of illiteracy than any other section of the late Russian Empire. It was none the less a tragedy for Lithuania that her youths with literary ambition, the potential leaders of her people, should have to go beyond her boundaries for their education, and afterward, in too many cases, to write in a tongue which their own people could not read. Saurusaitis, being an account of his personal experiences and observations encountered in the country as part of a trip extending from August of 1919, to February of 1920. Saurusaitis, though a native of Lithuania had emigrated to America and stayed for over thirty six years before making a trip back. Coming just after the First World War, the book captures the post war political and military tensions between the country and her neighbours, on which he remarks on the hope of nations such as Lithuania that the recently formed League of Nations would "become the means of bringing universal peace on earth, according to the will of the Almighty."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sidelights on Life in Lithuania A peasant wedding always takes place on Sunday, and if it' is a grand one, the whole church is lighted up, even the side altars; it must be remembered that the Lithuanians are devout Roman Catholics. The bride is led in by two young men and followed by her bridesmaids, who all, like herself, are in their best dresses, and wear crowns of flowers. The bridegroom is accompanied 'by several young men, and behind the wedding party are the two mothers. A table is placed within the sanctuary, having on it a crucifix and candles, and it is there that the priest stands to unite the couple, and the bride would be guilty of very bad manners if she did not weep the Whole time. If she is not inclined to do so the old women scold her. They then go home and feast for several days and nights, the first entertainment being given by the bride's mother, the next by that of the bridegroom, after which other relations follow suit. The national dance, which is something like a jig, and very difficult, is performed by a number of couples at once, and in the middle of it the bride and bridegroom dis appear, and go to their own house. APPENDIX AMERICAN SYMPATHY FOR THE LITHUANIANS The American Relief Fund for Lithuanian War Sufferers, under its principal patron, late Cardinal Farley of New York, collecting funds for war sufferers, petitioned President Wilson to aid the Lithuanian war sufferers. A delegation of this fund, with the aid of General Collins, of Elizabeth, N.
