Book excerpt: This thesis presents a methodology which simulates the activity, near the FEBA, of the Army's attack helicopter and the activity of hostile artillery in two formats : uniformly distributed area fire and precision fire against a point target as directed by a forward observer. A stochastic computer simulation was developed that varies the modeled activities from one replication to another. Current concepts of attack helicopter employment in the anti-armor role are used. Concepts of intervisibility, detectability, target location error, C-cubed time delay, and artillery round-to-round dispersion are also incorporated in the model. The model was experimented upon, using a hypothetical artillery weapon system, and the vulnerability predictions of the model are displayed and analyzed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 24 (thesis year 1979) a total of 10,033 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 215 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 24 reports these submitted in 1979, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes an attack helicopter module for the Joint Warfare Analysis Experimental Prototype (JWAEP), a joint theater level, low resolution stochastic simulation developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. The modeling formulations, required data, and assumptions which are required to portray attack helicopter operations in theater level simulations are presented. The focus for the attack module is the representation of attack helicopter units in the conduct of deliberate attacks; however, many of the models described can be applied to general helicopter operations. The formulations are limited to the major events that occur during an attack helicopter deliberate attack and represent initial research to portray attack helicopter operations in JWAEP.

This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May of 1997, the Turkish Military issued a Request for Proposal for the purchase of 145 attack helicopters. Turkey has chosen Bell Helicopter's KingCobra as its attack helicopter. The major difference between the USMC version of AH-1Z and the Turkish version KingCobra is the Targeting and Fire Control System. Bell Helicopter Textron has chosen Lockheed Martin to develop and build a new targeting system, the Target Sight System (TSS). The TSS will contain Lockheed Martin's 3-5 micrometers midwave staring array FLIR. On the other hand, the Turkish Secretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) has chosen Aselsan ASELFLIR-300T that contains an 8-12 micrometers longwave scanning second-generation FLIR. A comparison of range performance for these two systems has been made using the TAWS Field Performance Model. Since the physical parameters on these specific FLIRs are proprietary, the FLIR92 Simulation Model is used to generate performance parameters. These parameters are expected to represent the general characteristics of the two systems. The resultant data is used in the TAWS Field Performance Model to predict the range performances. The results have showed that the staring array midwave FLIR has longer ranges in the scenarios given in this thesis. This may not represent the real performance of the systems.

It explains all aspects of the manual cannon gunnery problem and presents a practical application of the science of ballistics. It includes step-by-step instructions for manually solving the gunnery problem which can be applied within the framework of decisive action or unified land operations. It is applicable to any Army personnel at the battalion or battery responsible to delivered field artillery fires. The principal audience for ATP 3-09.42 is all members of the Profession of Arms. This includes field artillery Soldiers and combined arms chain of command field and company grade officers, middle-grade and senior noncommissioned officers (NCO), and battalion and squadron command groups and staffs. This manual also provides guidance for division and corps leaders and staffs in training for and employment of the BCT in decisive action. This publication may also be used by other Army organizations to assist in their planning for support of battalions. This manual builds on the collective knowledge and experience gained through recent operations, numerous exercises, and the deliberate process of informed reasoning. It is rooted in time-tested principles and fundamentals, while accommodating new technologies and diverse threats to national security.

Book excerpt: Commencing in the early 1990s, Mr. James O'Bryon of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Operational Testing and Evaluation (OT & E), charged the Vulnerability Lethality Division (VLD) of what is now the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to capture in a hard-bound book the art/science of vulnerability and lethality (VIL) analysis. This work has since expanded into the publication of a series of volumes, each dedicated to a particular portion of the VIL community-ground mobile targets, hardened fixed targets, aircraft, etc. As a first step in this mammoth effort, a number of articles were commissioned to be gathered from some of the giants in the history of VIL analysis. These articles gave a foundation from which the writing of the first of the series commenced and are collected in this report with the hope that future generations of VIL analysts will find in them inspiration for their own accomplishments.
