Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Shower of Shite offers a gripping biographical narrative that charts the tumultuous journey of two parents as they navigate through a relentless storm of trials brought upon by their children. Their story, akin to the dramatic arcs of a British soap opera, unfolds with tragic twists and turns, an unceasing cascade of events that would seem overdrawn if not for their stark reality. These challenges, though uninvited and not of their own making, are met with a resilience that speaks to the profound sense of duty and unwavering compassion inherent in parental love. It’s a testament to the silent oath etched in the very fabric of biological bonds, a commitment to defend, sometimes even the indefensible, against the odds, all told with a humourous look back at life events faced by the family.

Book excerpt: Cultural Imprints draws on literary works, artifacts, performing arts, and documents that were created by or about the samurai to examine individual "imprints," traces holding specifically grounded historical meanings that persist through time. The contributors to this interdisciplinary volume assess those imprints for what they can suggest about how thinkers, writers, artists, performers, and samurai themselves viewed warfare and its lingering impact at various points during the "samurai age," the long period from the establishment of the first shogunate in the twelfth century through the fall of the Tokugawa in 1868. The range of methodologies and materials discussed in Cultural Imprints challenges a uniform notion of warrior activity and sensibilities, breaking down an ahistorical, monolithic image of the samurai that developed late in the samurai age and that persists today. Highlighting the memory of warfare and its centrality in the cultural realm, Cultural Imprints demonstrates the warrior's far-reaching, enduring, and varied cultural influence across centuries of Japanese history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lone Brit on 13 is a gripping true story of violence, degradation and adventure penned in the confines of a grim Malaga prison cell. Imprisoned for drug-smuggling, the lone Brit on Wing 13, Chance, reveals the horrors he experienced among cut-throat villains and screws in the netherworld of the Spanish prison system.Chance takes to writing in his dank prison cell in an attempt to escape his surroundings and recalls various episodes in his life: his time serving as a soldier in Thailand and Malaysia; his involvement with the 3 Para snatch-squad in the 1970s Belfast; and his subsequent descent into drug dealing and trafficking, which culminated in a high-speed boat chase and his imprisonment in a top-security Spanish prison. While inside, Chance fought his way to the surface of a cesspool of iniquitous scumbags using his fists: the only effective means of being understood in an environment of desecrated morality and non-existent integrity. With predators lurking everywhere, Chance had to be constantly on guard and in order to survive he had to be mentally prepared to inflict the necessary violent retribution on any would-be attacker or racist thug. As the sole British inmate, Chance was a prime target for the intimidating Spanish hardmen who thrived on cruelty and treachery. But his martial arts skills and Samurai philosophy proved to be more than a match for the aggressors. Once a respected and successful businessman admired by his peers - he had operated his own martial arts business in Spain before being jailed - Chance took one wrong turn in life and lost everything except the love and support of his loyal wife.

Book excerpt: Love and Terror has a historic background: the Malay Emergency; actually a guerilla war fought between Malayans and Japanese occupiers of Malaya (1942-45) that later became a war against the returning British by Malayan communists (mostly of Chinese extraction) and lasted until the late fifties. Spike, a British sapper, together withe two comrades is flown to Singapore in 1947. The Japanese are still in Malaya, but in POW work camps. Spike soon adapts to the Malay culture, learns the language with the help of Malay friends and lovers, and is transferred to a Malay training battalion as interpreter. He also meets and has an affair with a Chinese-Malayan taxi-dancer, Angelene (a.k.a, Aiwa Kam), sister of Ying Kam, a communist leader. His first love, the Malay woman, Kamariah, has a young son, Daud, who is kidnapped by the communist terrorists (CTs) in an attempt to persuade Kamariah to get information from Spike about a cache of arms hidden in the house in which he was quartered. Daud is executed by Ying Kam. Spike accepts Islam and marries Kamariah; tries to remain in Malaya, but is repatriated to Britain. When Ying Kam is betrayed by a comrade who is seeking the large reward offered by the British, he is ambushed and injured, but escapes. Incognito in a hospital, where Kamariah's sister is a nurse, Ying Kam is exposed and captured by Kamariah. She assists in the capture of other CTs and becomes a rich woman. Comrades of Spike have different encounters in Malaya, and later in Britain. Taffy, marries a Chinese-Malayan and stays on as an estate manager. He is ambushed and assassinated by CTs. The book, Love and Terror, illustrates many features of Malay, Chinese, and British culture and how they interact. East and West do meet in many instances.
