Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Shorter French Course IN preparing this book the authors have had particularly in mind the requirements of elementary classes in schools and col leges. The amount of grammatical material in each lesson is small, and in nearly all cases the exercises are based on extracts of connected French illustrating the points of grammar under observation. These extracts cover a wide range of topics relating to every - day life. The vocabulary employed has been kept within moderate limits, and consists of words and expressions in common use. The numerous oral exercises based on the French extracts are not intended to be exhaustive, but are designed rather to furnish suggestions for additional practice of a similar kind, to which the authors attach great importance. In most of the lessons oral or written practice is also provided in the continuation of tense-forms combined into connected phrases. Such exercises should be thor oughly studied and committed to memory, particularly since they often furnish additional examples of constructions which illustrate grammatical points contained in the lesson. The English sentences in the exercises are provided for trans lation into French as a final test of knowledge. It is recommended that written tests of this nature should be required only after the translation has been mastered orally. Where two or more sets of English sentences are given, the first one is regularly based directly on the French above it, the additional set or sets being of a more difficult and general character suitable for extra drill and review. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of the French Language This abridged French course was composed at the request and for the use of some Fren'ch students who wanted to learn, in a very limited space of time, all that is essential in the language and most commonly used in social and commercial relations. According to their information, existing French methods were either too elementary or too complicated, too incomplete or too voluminous. They wanted something short, clear, practical, substantial, and devoid, as much as possible, of pedantic technicalities. While in the state of manuscript, this little French course was studied by them and proved to be satisfactory. They found it easy to learn and interest ing, and, in a few months, were able to express themselves in French on many subjects of daily occurrence. Encouraged by their success, I showed my manuscript to pupils who had studied French with me for years with the aid of the old methods. All of them took a liking to my little essay and wanted to study it. Finally the conclusion was drawn that a book of this kind was needed in America, and I was advised to prepare it for print. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Course, Second Year This "Second Course," like the First, is based on the following principles, the soundness of which has been proved by years of practical experience: - (1) A living language must be heard before being seen. (2) The actions, persons, objects, scenes described must be imagined; i.e. seen in the mind, while the teacher speaks. (3) Every sentence contains a basic word (generally the verb) which should be learnt first. (4) Sentences are much more easily remembered if they are learnt in their logical succession. (5) Subjective sentences (expressing thoughts, feelings, judgments, etc.) are best learnt by oral teaching in the form of conversation. Directions are given on pages 1 to 4 of the First Course for the rational teaching and study of the exercises, verbs, and conversation sentences. In addition to the Exercises and Conversation sentences, rules of grammar are given, in French as well as in English, and should be learnt in French. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of the French Language: Introductory to Fasquelle's Larger French Course The book is intended to impart to the young student the easier principles Of the French language, and to give him a good knowledge Of the regular verbs, and of those irregular verbs which may be classified; in short, to form an Introduction to the New Method or Larger Course. The aim Of the author, in the whole course Of the work, has been to give Simple precepts, such as children may easily understand, and to illustrate the same by copious examples, easy to be imitated. Repetition in the rules has not been avoided where such repetition would render the meaning more intelligible. The frequent repetitions in the vocabularies are also intentional; and after the nouns, in these, the gender is indicated. This method has been preferred to that Of placing the article before such nouns. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course In French Unimportant points and exceptions have been omitted with the aim of avoiding the mass of detail so confusing to beginners. Efforts have been made to stimulate the student's interest by the following devices: (1) the book is profusely illustrated (2) the French exercise in each lesson consists of a connected paragraph, based on the picture of that lesson (when one is given) (3) the French exercises of the first thirty-three lessons take up home and school topics, while those of the remaining lessons describe successive incidents of a trip to Paris. Thus the vocabulary is that of everyday life and, incidentally, it is such as would be needed by anyone visiting France. The old method of Modern Language teaching undoubtedly lost much by its refusal to attach any importance to the spoken language. The new method as it is practised in Germany also loses much, as recent results there tend to prove, by its refusal to admit the claims of translation from the mother into the foreign tongue. The teaching of a Modern Language in a school is required to serve two ends: it must secure a knowledge of the language, and it must also provide a medium for general mental training.
