Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Egyptian People: With Chapters on Their Religion, Daily Life, Etc This little book, like its fellow on Egyptian Literature, has been written by request, and with the view of providing beginners with a handy introduction to the study of Egyptian History. The first six chapters in it are devoted to a description of the country of Egypt and the Nile, and the ancient Egyptians, and the principal facts of their history, which covers a period of more than four thousand years. The next three chapters describe briefly the main outlines of the Religion and Daily Life of this wonderful people, and of their worship of the dead. Without some idea of the Religion of the Egyptians, and of the very large part which the worship of the dead occupied in their daily life, it is impossible to understand their History. Our knowledge of it is derived almost entirely from the tombs, temples, and other funerary monuments which the Egyptians built in connection with the worship of their gods and their deified dead. The Egyptians never wrote history in the modem sense of the word. The reason why so few dates are given in the earlier part of the book will be apparent when the remarks on Egyptian chronology in Chapter X. have been read. The limit laid down for this book precluded all possibility of adding references or long footnotes and explanations, but the curious or unsatisfied reader can verify the facts given herein by consulting the authorities whose books are enumerated in the List of Egyptological Works given on pp. 246-49. Book excerpt: Egypt, enclosed as it is within desert borders and reliant on the River Nile, is in many ways unique, and its geographical isolation has presented a great opportunity for the country to develop along its own lines without invasion or outside influence. In ancient times, a strong central government, a "divine king" and the part played by religion made Egypt an outstanding civilization. Introducing the reader to different aspects of Egyptian history, and describing the everyday life and religion of its people, this book covers Egypt's fluctuating fortunes during the past 6000 years, including Ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic period, Muhammad Ali and the present day. The author's numerous publications include "The Blue Guide to Egypt", "Egyptian Legends and Stories" and "Ptolemaic Temples".

Book Synopsis A History of Ancient Egypt by : John Romer
Download or read book A History of Ancient Egypt written by John Romer and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient world comes to life in the first volume in a two book series on the history of Egypt, spanning the first farmers to the construction of the pyramids. Famed archaeologist John Romer draws on a lifetime of research to tell one history's greatest stories; how, over more than a thousand years, a society of farmers created a rich, vivid world where one of the most astounding of all human-made landmarks, the Great Pyramid, was built. Immersing the reader in the Egypt of the past, Romer examines and challenges the long-held theories about what archaeological finds mean and what stories they tell about how the Egyptians lived. More than just an account of one of the most fascinating periods of history, this engrossing book asks readers to take a step back and question what they've learned about Egypt in the past. Fans of Stacy Schiff's Cleopatra and history buffs will be captivated by this re-telling of Egyptian history, written by one of the top Egyptologists in the world.
