Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania, the Keystone: A Short History This work gives in outline the history of Pennsylvania. It is the outcome of long special study with more than ordinary advantages. The author has here indicated his view of the manner in which that history ought to be presented with greater fulness and detail. Much of the story has been based upon original materials preserved in the Library of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania never before utilized. The facts which go to prove the unequalled influence of Pennsylvania in the development of American affairs are narrated, but comment and opinions are omitted. Many heretofore accepted conventions have upon investigation been discarded. And, using the language of a recent author, "I have been sparing of references that encumber the foot of a page like barnacles on the keel of a vessel and delay progress." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Pennsylvania The purpose of this little book is to provide the boys and girls in the schools of Pennsylvania with a brief and clear account of the origin and growth of our state and its institutions. Believing that history is not merely past politics, but past life, the writer has tried to place due emphasis upon every phase of that life - social, industrial, political, intellectual, and religious. It has been his aim to state the principles upon which Pennsylvania was founded, to trace the steady growth of the state from small beginnings to its present imperial greatness, and to introduce the men, many of them well-nigh forgotten, who were the makers of that greatness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Pennsylvania No other state in the Union presents a history so closely connected with world progress as Pennsylvania. Here are to be found the beginnings of many types of religions. Here was the first real experiment in popular government. Here have been developed the whole theory and practice of transportation and the intricate factory system. Pennsylvania has been the laboratory in which many important experiments in sociology, religion, and government have been performed. Local history has an appeal not easily found in works covering a larger sphere. In this book an effort has been made so to present the subject as to lead the pupil to a better understanding of our national history. Hence special emphasis has been laid upon the various incidents in the life of the nation which have taken place in Pennsylvania. To make these relations clear to the pupil it has often been necessary to mention events which have occurred in other states. This plan has been followed in the hope that this book may be used as an introduction to, and in connection with, a study of the history of the United States. In the arrangement of materials, the topical method of treatment has been employed. This has occasionally brought events out of their chronological order. This was done to make the relation of events clear to pupils. In addition it was thought that detached descriptions of incidents have a tendency to form the bad habit of committing history to memory, whereas a logical arrangement encourages a correct method of study. The author is indebted for assistance and encouragement to Hon. Nathan C. Schaeffer and Hon. A. D. Glenn. Special acknowledgment is made to Dr. J. George Becht, Hon. Reed B. Teitrick, and Miss Katherine M. Ulery, of the Greensburg High School, who carefully read all of the manuscript and made valuable corrections and suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Centuries of Pennsylvania History Pennsylvania justly merits the proud title, The Key tone State. Her history more than her geography gave her commanding relations to the sister colonies clustered along the western margin of the Atlantic. Her great founder and first English owner, William Penn is the noblest character in America's colonial history. In Penn sylvania every creed and every nationality was not only tolerated but welcomed. Her colonial life was more com plex than that of any sister colony. To mould this life, so unlike in nationality, in religion, in civic ideals, and in industrial experience, into a unified people is one of the noblest records in the annals of any nation. To the credit of her people this was done without persecution and with out coercion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the History of Pennsylvania The earliest European settlers of Pennsylvania were the Swedes and the Dutch. Henry Hudson, in his daring voy age in the Half Moon, in 1609, entered the Delaware Bay, thus establishing the Dutch claim to this region. The river and the bay took their name from Lord Delaware, a governor of Virginia who entered the bay the next year. In 1616, Captain Hendrickson, a Dutch navigator, explored the Delaware River as far as the mouth of the Schuylkill. His vessel, the Onrust or Restless, had been built on the Hudson, taking the place of his original ship from Holland. The Dutch in 1623, under Captain Mey, settled on the Jersey shore of the Delaware, nearly opposite where Philadelphia now stands. This Captain Mey is new best remembered by the cape that bears his name. From this settlement the Dutch went into Pennsylvania, establishing a valuable trade in beaver-skins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Westmoreland: A History of Western Pennsylvania During the Revolution This book represents an effort to tell the revolutionary history of the Western Pennsylvania border; to describe the trials, the sacrifices, the errors and the heroisms of the frontiersmen, in their conflicts with tories, British par tisans and savages, during the years when Washington and his generals were fighting for independence along the Atlantic seaboard. The American Revolution covered many fields of action, and the operations on each con tributed to the grand result. The men who defended the western border against the savage tribes were doing their work essential to the cause of freedom as well as the ragged Continentals who faced British and Hessian battalions in New York or New Jersey. Naturally the operations in the East, where the main conflict raged and the issue was decided, have received the chief attention of historians; but the struggles on the west ern frontier have been unduly neglected. Some attention has been given to the revolutionary history of the New York and Tennessee frontiers, but no book tells, in con nected form, of the important operations in that great trans montane region of which Ft. Pitt was the center, during the years from 1775 to 1783. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
