Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The aim of this History of England is to give a short narrative of the growth of the British Empire and Constitution from the earliest times to the present day, in such a form and within such limits as shall supply the wants of middle and upper forms at schools, candidates for university and civil service examinations, and for the army and navy, pupil and assistant teachers at elementary schools, and students in training colleges, and also shall give a clear and intelligible account of those events and institutions a knowledge of which is so much needed by the student of modern political life. To attain all these ends within the space of 450 pages has been a most difficult task, and a rigid censorship has been needed, both in choosing the subjects and events to be mentioned, and in allotting an appropriate space to each. In deciding what subjects to admit, I have had with great regret to omit all references to the manners and customs of the people, except where they have borne directly upon political events; on the other hand, greater space has been given to the working of economic causes than has been usual in a book of this size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Advanced History of England: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The object of this book is to carry the study of English History a stage further than has been done in my Short History of England (longmans and It has been specially designed to meet the wants of four classes of readers: (1) of those, either at school or college, who, having mastered the elements of English History in such a book as the author's Elementary History of England (rivington, Percival, and and what are known as the 'outlines in such a book as the author's Short History, are preparing to study in greater detail such a period as 1485 to 1603, or 1714 to 1815 (2) of teachers who, while taking a class in the elements or outlines, ' wish to have in their own hands a fuller and more developed treatment of events 3 (3) of university students, who require a fuller treatment of the whole course of events than is given in the Short History; and (4) of those of the general public who wish to have in their hands a handy but fairly full history to which they may turn for ready information on the historical points that crop up day by day in politics or conversation. In trying to supply these needs I have throughout tried to keep in view certain principles which it may be useful to state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of England, From the Earliest Times, to the Death of George the Second IT is fortunate for mankind, that those periods of history which are the least serviceable, are the least known. It has been the study of many learned men to rescue from obscurity, and throw light upon, those early ages when the Britons were wholly barbarous, and their country uncultivated. But these researches have generally terminated in conjecture; so that whence Britain was at first peopled, or took its name, is still uncertain. The variety of opinions upon this head serve to prove the futility of all. It will, therefore, be snficient to observe, that this beautiful island, by some thought the largest in the world, was called Britannia by the Romans long before the time of Caesar. It is supposed that this name was originally given to it by the merchants, who resorted hither from the continent. These called the inhabitants by one common name of Briths, from the' custom amon the natives of painting their naked bodies and small shields with an azure glue, which in the language of the country was called brick, and which served to dis 'sh them from those strangers who came among them for the purpose of tra e or alliance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Modern English Literature The great pressure upon space has been relieved by dividing the history of English literature into two por tions. If this series continues to receive the support of the public, it is hoped that a volume on the archaic section may bring the story down from the earliest times to Robert of Brunne and Laurence Minot. In my first three chapters I have further lightened my labour by leaving out of consideration what was written in this country in Latin or French, for, although this may be material in dealing with thought in England, it can have but a small connection with the history of expression in the English language. I make no apology for the prominence given throughout to the art of poetry, for it is in verse that style can most definitely and to greatest advantage be studied, especially in a literature like ours, where prose has mainly been written without any other aim than the naive transference of ideas or statement of facts, like the prose of M. Jourdain, while our national poetry, which is one of our main national glories, has been a consecutive chain of consciously elaborated masterpieces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the Death of Henry VII Tms History of England was planned and has been written with an especial view to its use in Schools, and among younger students who read the subject. It contains, first, a connected relation of the main facts of the political and constitutional history in due chronological order; secondly, a sketch as thorough as space would allow, of the course and progress of the language, literature, and social life of the English people, in a series of chapters at the end of the various periods into which the history naturally falls. While I have not shrunk from noticing institutions and events for the full understanding of which the beginner may require the teacher's oral help and while I have thought it well to give the most dramatic and pathetic incidents of the story wherever I could in the very words of a contem porary authority, I have nevertheless tried to write in a simple, straightforward style, and have added a brief glossary of those few unusual or technical words I have been unable to avoid, or explain in the text. Maps, Plans, Tables, and Pedigrees have been supplied in sufficient detail to enable the reader to get a true idea of the relative positions of the persons or places named in the text. We need not ask where or what England is. Every boy and girl can tell as that England is the largest of the three parts of the island lying west of the conti nent of Europe, called Great Britain. Everyone knows that England is the center of that great empire upon whose terri tory the sun never sets. Agriculture and manufactures flourish there; good roads, schoolhouses, churches, and hospitals abound. England is a civilized, a Christian nation. Once England was far different. Centuries ago the Christian religion had not reached its shores; the signs of civilization did not exist; hunt ing and fighting were the most common employments of its peo ple. Indeed, it was not England; the inhabitants were not Eng lishmen, nor did they speak a language at all like English. The island then had the name of Britain, and the people were called Britons. The story of the wonderful changes that have made early Britain the England of to-day is the history of England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, From the Earliest to the Present Time, Vol. 1 of 5: In Five Volumes This book was planned, much of it was written, and some of it was printed, many years ago. But since I left England, in 1860, I have had duties to perform which leave little leisure for literary occupations. And several parts of what I had composed while at home have been re-written by me here, in consequence of the new light that has been thrown on our history by numerous publications which have appeared during the last eight years. But the second volume is now almost ready for the press, and I trust that the remaining three will follow at no long intervals. I mention emphatically that this History of England from the Earliest Times to the Present is to be completed in Five Volumes of moderate size. I wish to warn my readers what they are not entitled to expect here. I do not profess to set out every English historical event of any importance, and every biographical occurrence of any interest, that is known of every period, and of every eminent English personage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, for Young People The earliest name for the country now called England was Albion, which we find in the works of Greek writers more than three hundred years before Christ. When the Romans went there it bore the name of Britain, and as such it was known for many centuries. Then it gradually became Angle-land, or England; and in modern times the inhabitants have given to the whole island, including England, Scotland, and Wales, the name of Great Britain. There are many stories told about the Britons, going back as far as eight or nine centuries before Christ; and although there is reason to think that these stories were invented by writers who lived long afterward, and that we really know nothing about the old Britons, yet it is well to know something of the fables.
