It is a play of strong passions, of absorbing human interest. But its indescribable charm is derived from the shifting effects of Nature's scenery no less than from the play and interplay of human action. Before, therefore, we embark upon the story, let us, briefly and hurriedly, survey the scene of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Burma In this brief History of Burma I have tried to give a clear account of what is really known of the early period, together with some notice of the traditions which possess historical interest. From the point at which the records become trustworthy I have endeavoured to put clearly and concisely all that the young student should know, without burdening his mind with unnecessary details. I hope that a work dealing with a country which has received so much attention in recent years from the traveller, artist, and litterateur, may not be without general interest. The discussion of disputed points, whether of fact or chronology, has-been avoided. Different versions of the Maharazawin, the Burmese Chronicles of the Kings; vary considerably. Generally I have accepted the dates assigned by Sir Arthur Phayre, to whose works I gladly acknowledge my indebtedness. In certain cases, where the Chinese accounts as given by Mr. Parker seem more trustworthy, I have preferred the dates as well as the facts given in the Chinese chronicles. For the later period I have relied mainly on Gray's Alaungpra Dynasty, the Gazetteer of British Burma (1880), and the Gazetteer of Upper Burma (1900). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legendary History of Burma and Arakan English history, the authorities for which are the equally fable mongering early chronicles. No national traditions are without their meaning, if we could find it, and because we cannot do so at once to dismiss them as utterly useless and false is both unwise and unscholarly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burma With Special Reference to Her Relations With China Fytche' s book of personal recollections, and Mr. James Scott's little work on Burma hardly touch upon the general political history, though Ander son's accounts, both in the popular and in the official form, are admirable so far as theyg 0o. The British enima Gazetteel gives a terribly hazy and man gled account of the rise and progress of Burma its re lations with China especially are hopelessly confused. The same thing may be said of Gray's History of Burma. A new edition of the Gazetteer is, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tribes on the Frontier of Burma The chairman, lieut.-general sir edwin collen, after making announcements as to the future programme of the Society, said Very few words indeed will be necessary by way of introduction of the lecturer, for Sir Frederic Fryer is known to us all as a distinguished administrator, whose early years of service were passed in the Punjab, and who has been connected with the great province of Burma for more than twenty-one years. His first service there dates, I believe, from 1886, and although he returned for a short time to the Punjab, where he filled high offices with great distinction, the services of his later years were chiefly in Burma, where he presided over the administration for an unusually long period. It is at any rate certain that the sections of Mr. Oates on the Fauna, of Captain Gage on the Flora, of Mr. Bruce on the Forests, of Mr. Richard on Means of Transport, and of Mr. Mariano on Music, could only be excelled by those who might have larger space allowed to them, and by very few even then. The Burman cannot conceive of a religion without a Defender of the Faith- a king who appoints and rules the Buddhist hierarchy. The extinction of the monarchy left the nation, according to the people's notions, without a religion. We have overthrown the king and destroyed all traces of the kingly rule. Naturally they look upon this as the destruction of their nationality. Whether we have acted Wisely history will decide. The step has, however, been taken, and we dare not now go back. We have to govern a turbulent people inhabiting a vast territory of hills and plains, forests, jungle, and swamp, impassable to troops during more than half the year. Vigour, tact, and skill are much wanted in the administration.* But vigour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In all Burma, apart from the towns, there are barely two hundred miles of metalled and properly bridged roads, and these would not carry the motor Omnibuses which ply regularly in the Malay States Otherwise there are not above a thousand miles Of road in Burma, and they are what are called country roads, some of them bridged and drained, some of them only partly bridged and drained, and the rest merely spaces where the jungle has been cut down These are convenient enough for mere local purposes.
