Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Australia The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed. At the same time it is hoped that due importance has been given to personality. History is a record of the doings of men living in communities, not of blind, nerve less forces. Ten years have now elapsed since the establish ment of the Commonwealth of Australia. It sealed the union of the colonies, and legally recognized the national existence. That is the point to which we have attempted to carry the story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 1 of 3 In marshalling the facts which prove how much error has been accepted as truth with regard to the pilgrim fathers of Australia, I have allowed the actors to speak for themselves as much as possible. An author may labour to incorporate as the coinage of his own brain the wit or sense which emanated from those of whom he writes but success in such effort would be, after all, ignoble, and would rob his page of the dramatic element which makes it lifelike. The day will come when men will be glad to know how the colonizers of Australia lived and moved; what were their daily tasks and distractions; how and by whom troubles were created or overcome by what passions men were stirred from time to time how sometimes the blasts of tyranny were resisted by the growing plant, and how were engendered within it parasites which preyed upon its powers and threatened to bring low many a noble bough fitted to adorn it in season, and to render back the healthy sap which, coursing from root to branch, gives health and life to the tree. Practically those who cannot write can read to little purpose, and my assumption is in the main a just one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aldine History of Queensland, Vol. 1 No country in the world has been more extensively written about than Australia, and yet it is a difficult matter to find upon our bookshelves any work that will give the inquirer of this or other lands an adequate idea of the history, resources, enterprises, and development of the country partly because most that has been published is now out of print, and partly for the reason that writers have confined themselves to only one phase of colonial life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of Australia and Elsewhere, 1842-1914 Show that Colonists, though living far away from the land of their origin, still remember the Mother Country, and regard her with the affection due to her by her children. The later portion, it is hoped, may prove of interest as representing the thought and action of an average man who has had to face problems, some of which have been and, in all probability, will continue to be, the subject of discussion and legislative action in the Parliament of Great Britain. In all that I did or attempted in legislation, my desire was not blindly to follow any leader, but, to do what I believed to be best for the country of my adoption, apart from mere party considerations. Throughout my parliamentary career, which began more than forty years ago, I have been more or less handicapped by the necessity of maintaining myself and those dependent on me by my professional earnings. Often when I would willingly have de voted all my thought to the solution of difficult questions I have had to scratch for sixpences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Arcadia: An Australian Story "We sit on a cloud and sing... And say the world runs smooth - while right below, Welters the black fermenting heap of life, On which our State is built. - The Saint's Tragedy. "Some Lancashire lads I know would have made short and cursory work of waiting for Government. 'Hang the Government! Why wait for them? Let us co-op. and do the work ourselves!'" - Craig. "Pull him down!" "Knock him off the seat!" "An aristocrat riding us down like dogs!" A smart fusillade of such epithets, portending hand-to-hand conflict, broke from the foremost of a straggling band of workmen; some reckless and uncanny in appearance, others listless and half-interested, but animated, for the moment, as dullest street crowds are, by occurrence of "an accident." The dog-cart, apparently of a professional man, had run over a city waif hanging on the outskirts of a detachment of "the unemployed" on their course to the noon-tide rendezvous. The leaders, welcoming a victim, were venting curses on the head of the luckless Jehu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australasia, Vol. 1: Australia and New Zealand All place names beginning with Mac or M' have been spelt in full as Mac, beginning the second syllable with a small letter. This system has been adopted after reference to Dr. J. Scott Keltie, with whose approval I feel safe. It is often now impossible to determine how the stockman who first surveyed a country from Mac 's Look-out, or first watered his flock at Mac 's Water-hole, preferred to spell his name. When we find two brothers spelling their name, one Macallister and the other m'allister, geographers may be excused for adopting a uniform spelling of this prefix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Australasia: A Brief History of the Origin and Development of the British Dominions in the South Pacific This book is an effort to give a brief but accurate account of the winning and making of Australasia. It may seem that a disproportionate amount of space has been given to the earlier history of Australia. For this there are several reasons. A good deal of new material bearing on the early periods of settlement and of the events that preceded settlement has only recently been made available. The fact that the French took formal possession of part of Australia, for instance, has appeared in no previous history. Then, apart from the special interest that attaches to the beginnings of development, the early days present very much of historical interest. What may be called the middle period of Australian history is comparatively featureless except to the specialist. It was a time of peaceful progress and development. Except for the story of e ploration and for one or two outstanding events there is not much of it to be said in a general history. In some of the colonies important constitutional questions were raised and dealt with, but in a work of this kind it is impossible to treat of these in detail. With the years 1914 - 1918 the case is different. Australia was then drawn into the main stream of world events, and the years of war were crowded with happenings of great magnitude. An attempt has been made to sketch the main outlines of this period, and to indicate the changes in outlook which they caused. But to attempt to deal in detail with the war efforts of Australia would be outside the scope of this book. To treat the matter fully and in its proper perspective it would be necessary to give some thing like a new history of the war.
