Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 The work here offered to the public, conceived and commenced in the year 1876, was designed to supply what seemed a crying need of English literature - viz., an account of Ancient Egypt, combining its antiquities with its history, addressed partly to the eye, and pre senting to the reader, within a reasonable compass, the chief points of Egyptian life - manners, customs, art, science, literature, religion - together with a tolerably full statement of the general course of historical events, whereof Egypt was the scene, from the foundation of the monarchy to the loss of independence. Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Egypt I. Egypt, A wonderland - There have always been a peculiar interest and a charm attached to Ancient Egypt and its story, arising out of the romance and traditions connected with the land. It was to Egypt that Abraham went; in it Joseph fulfilled his high destiny; at its court and schools Moses received his early training; and there the Israelites groaned under the tyranny of Pharaoh, from which they were delivered only by the mighty power of Jehovah. The youthful nations of Greece and Rome were impressed by its hoary antiquity and high civilization, and to them also in many things Egypt became a schoolmaster. They, as all who Since have visited the Nile valley, stood with awe before its colossal works, its pyramids and temples, its Sphinx and obelisks, and spread the fame of them through all lands. We do not wonder then, that in the popular mind Egypt' was as a fabled land. Now, while there is more interest than ever in its story, Egypt is no longer regarded as a mere isolated wonder, like some extraordinary freak of nature, or one of its own pyramids but. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Self-Verifying Chronological History of Ancient Egypt: From the Foundation of the Kingdom to the Beginning of the Persian Dynasty The greater part of this book was written while the researches were being made. The author's point of view was constantly changing. The horizon was constantly widening. Each new discovery, each new fact brought to light, served to dispel the clouds and mists which hung over, and obscured from view, some of the most important periods of Egyptian history. A book written under such circumstances natu rally lacks uniformity and logical continuity. Al though it was completed about a year ago, I could not persuade myself to publish it in its present form, but hoped to find the necessary time and leisure to remold it from beginning to end. This hope, I regret to say, has not been realized. The discoveries, how ever, are of such a nature, that I would not be justified in longer withholding them from the world. The value of the facts made public must be my excuse for the form in which they now appear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Egyptian People: With Chapters on Their Religion, Daily Life, Etc This little book, like its fellow on Egyptian Literature, has been written by request, and with the view of providing beginners with a handy introduction to the study of Egyptian History. The first six chapters in it are devoted to a de scription of the country of Egypt and the Nile and the ancient Egyptians, and the principal facts of their history, which covers a period of more than four thousand years. The next three chapters describe briefly the main outlines of the Religion and Daily Life of this wonderful people, and of their worship of the dead. Without some idea of the Religion of the Egyptians, and of the very large part which the worship of the dead occupied in their daily life, it is impossible to understand their History. Our knowledge of it is derived almost entirely from the tombs, temples, and other funerary monuments which the Egyptians built in connection with the worship of their gods and their deified dead. The Egyptians never wrote history in the modern sense of the word. The reason why so few dates are given in the earlier part of the book will be apparent when the remarks on Egyptian chronology in Chapter X. Have been read. The limit laid down for this book precluded all possibility of adding references or long footnotes and ex planations, but the curious or unsatisfied reader can verify the facts given herein by consulting the authorities whose books are enumerated in the List of Egyptological Works given on pp. 246 - 49. Book excerpt: Explore the entire history of the ancient Egyptian state from 3000 B.C. to 400 A.D. with this authoritative volume The newly revised Second Edition of A History of Ancient Egypt delivers an up-to-date survey of ancient Egypt's history from its origins to the Roman Empire's banning of hieroglyphics in the fourth century A.D. Freshly updated to take into account recent discoveries, the book makes the latest scholarship accessible to a wide audience, including introductory undergraduate students. A History of Ancient Egypt outlines major political and cultural events and places Egypt's history within its regional context and detailing interactions with western Asia and Africa. Each period of history receives equal attention and a discussion of the problems scholars face in its study. The book offers a foundation for all students interested in Egyptian culture by providing coverage of topics like: A thorough introduction to the formation of the Egyptian state between the years of 3400 B.C. and 2686 B.C. An exploration of the end of the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate period, from 2345 B.C. to 2055 B.C. An analysis of the Second Intermediate Period and the Hyksos between 1700 B.C. and 1550 B.C. A discussion of Greek and Roman Egypt between 332 B.C. and A.D. 395. Perfect for students of introductory courses in ancient Egyptian history and as background material for students of courses in Egyptian art, archaeology, and culture, A History of Ancient Egypt will also earn a place in the libraries of students taking surveys of the ancient world and those seeking a companion volume to A History of the Ancient Near East.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Egypt: In the Light of Modern Discoveries The costliness of nearly all truly valuable works upon Ancient Egypt will prevent the owning; the very fullness of some others will prevent the reading; but, after the own ing and reading, there is much that manv can not be blamed for forgetting, while much remains which all should remember. The author of this work has long been a student of Egyp tian history and archaeology. He has studied the monuments and inscriptions in their native land, after visiting them in their exile in the museums of Great Britain and on the Conti nent, and has enjoyed what he knew upon the subject. After much study and repeated visits to Egypt for that purpose, the traveler will come home, as the author has, to find that; in going to Egypt, he left large treasures of. Egyptian knowledge behind him, in the books, essays, translations, and periodicals, as well as original monuments, which are already to be found throughout Europe, and, to some small amount, even in America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Ancient Egyptians This little book is intended to serve as an elementary introduction to the study of Egyptian Literature. Its object is to present a short series of specimens of Egyp tian compositions, which represent all the great periods of literary activity in Egypt under the Pharaohs, to all who are interested in the study of the mental development of ancient nations. It is not addressed to the Egyptological specialist, to whom, as a matter of course, its contents are well known, and therefore its pages are not loaded with elaborate notes and copious references. It represents, I believe, the first attempt made to place before the public a summary of the principal contents of Egyptian Literature in a handy and popular form.
