Book Synopsis Language Empires in Comparative Perspective by : Christel Stolz
Download or read book Language Empires in Comparative Perspective written by Christel Stolz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of empire is associated with economic and political mechanisms of dominance. For the last decades, however, there has been a lively debate concerning the question whether this concept can be transferred to the field of linguistics, specifically to research on situations of language spread on the one hand and concomitant marginalization of minority languages on the other. The authors who contributed to this volume concur as to the applicability of the notion of empire to language-related issues. They address the processes, potential merits and drawbacks of language spread as well as the marginalization of minority languages, language endangerment and revitalization, contact-induced language change, the emergence of mixed languages, and identity issues. An emphasis is on the dominance of non-Western languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and, particularly, Russian. The studies demonstrate that the emergence, spread and decline of language empires is a promising area of research, particularly from a comparative perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marit Julien investigates the relation between morphology and syntax, or more specifically, the relation between the form of inflected verbs and the position of those verbs. She surveys 530 languages and shows that, with the exception of agreement markers, the positioning of verbal inflectional markers relative to verb stems is compatible with a syntactic approach to morphology.
Book Synopsis Chechen-English English-Chechen Dictionary and Phrasebook by : Nicholas Awde
Download or read book Chechen-English English-Chechen Dictionary and Phrasebook written by Nicholas Awde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is a simple means of sharing the Chechen language and culture with speakers of English. It makes no claim to be a linguistic research tool, but is provided as a practical aid for the first steps in communication with an intentionally easy-to-use pronunciation system. This is the first time Chechen has been presented in such a way, a venture not without its obstacles since the language is still sadly without a truly developed analysis of its structure. An attempt has been made to provide phrases and scenes from everyday life, as well as items of practical background information, although their relevance clearly will depend on the actual situation in Chechnya, and whether the war is in fact over or just postponed.

Book Synopsis The Structure of Russian in Outline by : Charles Everett Bidwell
Download or read book The Structure of Russian in Outline written by Charles Everett Bidwell and published by [Pittsburgh] : University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief, structurally oriented reference grammar of Russian for use by advanced students, Slavicists, and linguists, Bidwell's guide can also be used as a text for courses on the linguistic structure and grammar of the Russian language. Bidwell offers an original phonemic analysis and, breaking with traditional grammars, treats the language as primarily and basically a spoken phenomenon with the grammatical description based solidly on the spoken forms. Divided into three sections, focusing on the phonemics, morphology, and syntax, The Structure of Russian in Outline aims to give a coherent and concise account of the sounds, forms, and constructions of the Russian language, treating the whole as an integrated system structured on hierarchical levels.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Languages of the Caucasus by : Maria Polinsky
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Languages of the Caucasus written by Maria Polinsky and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 1189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Languages of the Caucasus is an introduction to and overview of the linguistically diverse languages of southern Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. Though the languages of the Caucasus have often been mischaracterized or exoticized, many of them have cross-linguistically rare features found in few or no other languages. This handbook presents facts and descriptions of the languages written by experts. The first half of the book is an introduction to the languages, with the linguistic profiles enriched by demographic research about their speakers. It features overviews of the main language families as well as detailed grammatical descriptions of several individual languages. The second half of the book delves more deeply into theoretical analyses of features, such as agreement, ellipsis, and discourse properties, which are found in some languages of the Caucasus. Promising areas for future research are highlighted throughout the handbook, which will be of interest to linguists of all subfields.
Book Synopsis Understanding Morphology by : Martin Haspelmath
Download or read book Understanding Morphology written by Martin Haspelmath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Understanding Morphology has been fully revised in line with the latest research. It now includes 'big picture' questions to highlight central themes in morphology, as well as research exercises for each chapter. Understanding Morphology presents an introduction to the study of word structure that starts at the very beginning. Assuming no knowledge of the field of morphology on the part of the reader, the book presents a broad range of morphological phenomena from a wide variety of languages. Starting with the core areas of inflection and derivation, the book presents the interfaces between morphology and syntax and between morphology and phonology. The synchronic study of word structure is covered, as are the phenomena of diachronic change, such as analogy and grammaticalization. Theories are presented clearly in accessible language with the main purpose of shedding light on the data, rather than as a goal in themselves. The authors consistently draw on the best research available, thus utilizing and discussing both functionalist and generative theoretical approaches. Each chapter includes a summary, suggestions for further reading, and exercises. As such this is the ideal book for both beginning students of linguistics, or anyone in a related discipline looking for a first introduction to morphology.
Book Synopsis The Structure of Language by : Emma L. Pavey
Download or read book The Structure of Language written by Emma L. Pavey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the time we communicate using language without considering the complex activity we are undertaking, forming words and sentences in a split second. This book introduces the analysis of language structure, combining both description and theory within a single, practical text. It begins by examining words and parts of words, and then looks at how words work together to form sentences that communicate meaning. Sentence patterns across languages are also studied, looking at the similarities and the differences we find in how languages communicate meaning. The book also discusses how context can affect how we structure our sentences: the context of a particular language and its structures, the context of old and new information for us and our addressee(s), and the context of our culture.
