Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this volume Christoph Ketterer analyses political preaching during the reigns of Charles II (1660–1685) and James II (1685–1688/89). He argues that the political importance of sermons preached at court, before Parliament and in the churches of London, is based on the unsolved political, and confessional tensions of the era. Preachers relatively freely discussed questions of religious tolerance, models of political power, and could offer counsel and criticism to those in power. They were in a position to influence the political and religious discourse of Restoration England. In addition, a refined culture of reception existed, and listeners, readers as well as preachers were acutely aware of the sermon genre's performative dimension. Sermons therefore continued to be of central importance for the political and religious discourse of the Restoration.
Download or read book Rebranding Rule written by Kevin Sharpe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the climactic part of his three-book series exploring the importance of public image in the Tudor and Stuart monarchies, Kevin Sharpe employs a remarkable interdisciplinary approach that draws on literary studies and art history as well as political, cultural, and social history to show how this preoccupation with public representation met the challenge of dealing with the aftermath of Cromwell's interregnum and Charles II's restoration, and how the irrevocably changed cultural landscape was navigated by the sometimes astute yet equally fallible Stuart monarchs and their successors.

Download or read book The Christian Monitors written by Brent Sirota and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: div This original and persuasive book examines the moral and religious revival led by the Church of England before and after the Glorious Revolution, and shows how that revival laid the groundwork for a burgeoning civil society in Britain. After outlining the Church of England's key role in the increase of voluntary, charitable, and religious societies, Brent Sirota examines how these groups drove the modernization of Britain through such activities as settling immigrants throughout the empire, founding charity schools, distributing devotional literature, and evangelizing and educating merchants, seamen, and slaves throughout the British empire—all leading to what has been termed the “age of benevolence.”/DIV

It replaces the popular Holy Women, Holy Men. By action of the 2015 General Convention, A Great Cloud of Witnesses is being made available for devotional or catechetical use and for use in public worship throughout the Church. GCW reflects the lively experience of holiness, especially on the level of the local community. Each entry includes a biographical narrative of the person or people, highlighting the significance of their life and witness. A devotional collect is provided in both Rite I and Rite II language and a set of indexing "tags" suggests how the entry fits into the broader scope of Christian history and delineates the Christian gifts and virtues that may have inspired the person's ministries. Also available as 3-ring hardcover foil stamped binder with loose leaf pages and tabs. The binder allows for insertions and deletions by action of future General Conventions without repurchasing the bound edition.
