Download or read book War Sermons written by Gilles Teulié and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays ponders upon the intricate relations between the military and the spiritual from the Middle Ages to the present day. In order to analyse human attitudes towards conflicts, it is necessary to dwell upon the nebulous area where the religious and political spheres interweave so tightly that they become virtually impossible to distinguish. Indeed, despite remaining the responsibility of the state, the political decision to go to war depends heavily on some spiritual underpinning since, without a moral, ethical, or religious justification, it stands for gratuitous violence and is often equated with aggression. Situated as they are at the intersection of religious and political awareness, war sermons are an invaluable source of information regarding societies in times of conflict. Indeed, whether favourable or hostile to the waging of war, preachers participated in the edification of parishioners’ opinion. The writing, delivering or reading of sermons shaped the mental process of peoples who sought their ministers’ moral and spiritual guidance in times of crisis. This collection of essays offers contributions to the renewed debate on the function of war, its representations and its rhetoric as generators of identity.

Book Synopsis Negotiating Toleration by : Nigel Aston
Download or read book Negotiating Toleration written by Nigel Aston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1714 was a revolutionary year for Dissenters across the British Empire. The Hanoverian Succession upended a political and religious order antagonistic to Protestant non-conformity and replaced it with a regime that was, ostensibly, sympathetic to the Whig interest. The death of Queen Anne and the dawn of Hanoverian Rule presented Dissenters with fresh opportunities and new challenges as they worked to negotiate and legitimize afresh their place in the polity. Negotiating Toleration: Dissent and the Hanoverian Succession, 1714-1760 examines how Dissenters and their allies in a range of geographic contexts confronted and adapted to the Hanoverian order. Collectively, the contributors reveal that though generally overlooked compared to the Glorious Revolution of 1688-9 or the Act of Union in 1707, 1714 was a pivotal moment with far reaching consequences for dissenters at home and abroad. By decentralizing the narrative beyond England and exploring dissenting reactions in Scotland, Ireland, and North America, the collection demonstrates the extent to which the Succession influenced the politics and touched the lives of ordinary people across the British Atlantic world. As well as offering a thorough breakdown of confessional tensions within Britain during the short and medium terms, this authoritative volume also marks the first attempt to look at the complex interaction between religious communities in consequence of the Hanoverian Succession.
Book Synopsis Politics and the Nation by : Robert Harris
Download or read book Politics and the Nation written by Robert Harris and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-01-03 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents a new picture of political life in mid-eighteenth century Britain, a period of history which is poorly understood. Written in a clear, accessible style, and drawing on much original material, this book argues that British politics and political culture in the mid eighteenth century have often been poorly understood through over-emphasis on 'stability'. Using a thematic approach, it reconstructs a political world in which vital issues continued to exercise the minds and emotions of those who made up the contemporary 'political nation', a group which included far more than the handful of politicans who competed for national political office. This is a book which interprets its subject broadly, and which seeks to tell the stories of politics in this period through the words and projects, hopes and fears, of contemporaries . It also represents an important contribution to the difficult, but important, project of writing the history of the British Isles. Development in Scotland and Ireland are given careful attention along with those of England.

Download or read book A Sermon on Regeneration written by George Whitefield and published by Curiosmith. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whitefield explores the doctrine of genuine regeneration and how little it is understood. He warns that "nothing short of a thorough sound conversion will fit thee for the kingdom of heaven." What does it mean to be in Christ and to be a new creature? He explains the reasoning why this must be the case. He explains what practical effects this has in life. "Let each of us therefore seriously put this question to our hearts: Have we received the Holy Ghost since we believed? Are we new creatures in Christ, or no?"
