Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, Delivered in Portland, June 22, 1842: Before the Maine Missionary Society, at Its Thirty-Fifth Anniversary These words occur in a parable, in which our Lord compares himself to a nobleman, who went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return; and who, just before his departure, called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. Thus our Lord, - having accomplished all the objects which were to be effected by his visible presence, was taken up from his disciples, and a cloud received him out of their sight. He went up to take possession of his kingdom, and sit on the right hand of the throne of God; to have all power given unto him in heaven and in earth; to be invested with supreme dominion over the mightiest spirits, that reign in the invisible world. There his throne towers high above that of the loftiest archangel, and all the heavenly hierarchies prostrate themselves with lowly reverence before him. When our Lord left the world, that he might enter into his glory, he imposed on his apostles, and through them on his church in all succeeding ages, the duty of carrying forward the objects for which he left the bosom of the Father. To them he committed the interests of that glorious kingdom, whose foundations his own sacred hands had laid. These He appointed to be his agents in diffusing that holy truth to which he had borne witness. These were to be employed, as his instruments, in securing the salvation of the lost and perishing, whom he died to save.
