Transport processes including hydrodynamic dispersion, matrix diffusion, retardation, decay and solute transfer at fracture intersections, are considered. The problem includes advective transport in the fracture and rock matrix as well as advective and diffusive fracture-matrix exchange. Linear sorption in the fracture and matrix and radioactive decay are also treated. The solution is for steady, uniform transport velocities within the fracture and matrix, but allows for independent specification of each of the velocities. The problem is first solved in terms of the solute concentrations that result from an instantaneous point source. Superposition integrals are then used to derive the solute mass flux at a fixed downstream position from an instantaneous point source and for the solute concentrations that result from a continuous point source. Solutions are derived for cases with the solute source in the fracture and the solute source in the matrix. The analytical solutions are closed-form and are expressed in terms of algebraic functions, exponentials, and error functions. Comparisons between the analytical solutions and numerical simulations, as well as sensitivity studies, are presented. Increased sensitivity to cross-flow and solute source location is found for increasing Peclet number. The numerical solutions are found to compare well with the analytical solutions at lower Peclet numbers, but show greater deviation at higher Peclet numbers.

Book excerpt: Work conducted using laboratory soil columns has shown that diffusion into regions of immobile water can have a large effect on solute transport through porous media. This study focuses on the development, analysis, and application of an analytical model which incorporates the diffusion mechanism into the traditional three dimensional advective/dispersive solute transport equation. By consecutively applying the Laplace transform in time and the Fourier transform in space, analytical solutions are derived for the coupled partial differential equations which describe three dimensional advective/dispersive transport through regions of mobile water and Fickian diffusion through immobile water regions of simple geometry (spherical, cylindrical, and layered). To assist in the analysis of the models, a modified form of Aris' method of moments is presented, which permits the calculation of the spatial and temporal moments of the three-dimensional diffusion models, without having to invert the Laplace or Fourier transformed solutions. Using this method, the moments of the diffusion models are compared with one another, with the moments of a model that assumes equilibrium advective/dispersive transport, and with the moments of a model that assumes a first order rate law governs mass transfer between the mobile and immobile regions.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we study mathematical models and numerical schemes for reactive transport of a soluble substance in deformable media. The medium is a cylindrical channel with compliant adsorbing walls. The solutes are dissolved in a fluid flowing through the channel. The fluid, which carries the solutes, is viscous and incompressible. The problem is modeled by a convection-diffusion adsorption-desorption equation in moving domains. First, we present the mathematical formulation of the model in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. We study the well-posedness of the model.We then discretize the conservative variational form of the problem in the ALE framework in space, using the moving mesh ALE finite element method (ALE-FEM). In time, it is discretized using a novel Patankar linearization technique. We then prove global conditional stability for the fully discrete problem. Next, we present a conservative, positivity preserving, high resolution linear ALE-FCT scheme for this problem in the presence of dominant convection processes and wall reactions on the moving wall. Numerical simulations are performed to show validity of the scheme under various scenarios. The grid convergence of the numerical scheme is studied for the case of fixed meshes and moving meshes in fixed domains. Then, we simulate reactive transport in moving domains under linear and nonlinear wall reactions, and show that the motion of the compliant channel wall enhances adsorption of the solute from the fluid to the channel wall. Finally, we present a conservative, positivity preserving, high resolution nonlinear ALE-FCT scheme. The scheme is proved to be mass conservative in time, and positive at all times. Reactive transport is simulated using this scheme for its validation, to show it convergence, and to compare it against the linear ALE-FCT scheme. The nonlinear ALE-FCT is shown to perform better than the linear ALE-FCT scheme for large time steps.

Book excerpt: The thesis deals with the numerical modeling of nonreactive and nonlinearly sorbing solutes in groundwater and analysis of the effect of heterogeneity resulting from spatial variation of physical and chemical parameters on the transport of solutes. For this purpose, a hyƯbrid flux corrected transport (FCT) and central difference method based on operator-split approach is developed for advection-dispersion solute transport equation. The advective transport is solved using the FCT technique, while the dispersive transport is solved using a conventional, fully implicit, finite difference scheme. Three FCT methods are developed and extension to multidimensional cases are discussed. The FCT models developed are anlaysed using test problems possessing analytƯical solutions for one and two dimensional cases, while analysing advection and dispersion dominated transport situations. Different initial and boundary conditions, which mimic the laboratory and field situations are analysed in order to study numerical dispersion, peak cliping and grid orientation. The developed models are tested to study their relative merits and weaknesses for various grid Peclet and Courant numbers. It is observed from the one dimensional results that all the FCT models perform well for continuous solute sources under varying degrees of Courant number restriction. For sharp solute pulses FCT1 and FCT3 methods fail to simulate the fronts for advection dominated situations even for modƯerate Courant numbers. All the FCT models can be extended to multidimensions using a dimensional-split approach while FCT3 can be made fully multidimensional. It is observed that a dimensional-split approach allows use of higher Courant numbers while tracking the fronts accurately for the cases studied. The capability of the FCT2 model is demonstrated in handling situations where the flow is not aligned along the grid direction. It is observed that FCT2 method is devoid of grid orientation error, which is a common pr.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this research is to develop a mathematical framework that could be used to model or predict the rate of fluid absorption and release in fibrous sheets made up of solid or porous fibers. In the first step, a two-scale two-phase modeling methodology is developed for studying fluid release from saturated/unsaturated thin fibrous media made up of solid fibers when brought in contact with a moving solid surface. Our macroscale model is based on the Richards' equation for two-phase fluid transport in porous media. The required constitutive relationships, capillary pressure and relative permeability as functions of the medium's saturation, are obtained through microscale modeling. Here, a mass convection boundary condition is considered to model the fluid transport at the boundary in contact with the target surface. The mass convection coefficient plays a significant role in determining the release rate of fluid. Moreover the release rate depends on the properties of the fluid, fibrous sheet, the target surface as well as the speed of the relative motion, and remains to be determined experimentally. Obtaining functional relationships for relative permeability and capillary pressure is only possible through experimentation or expensive microscale simulations, and needs to be repeated for different media having different fiber diameters, thicknesses, or porosities. In this concern, we conducted series of 3-D microscale simulations in order to investigate the effect of the aforementioned parameters on the relative permeability and capillary pressure of fibrous porous sheets. The results of our parameter study are utilized to develop general expressions for kr(S) and Pc(S). Furthermore, these general expressions can be easily included in macroscale fluid transport equations to predict the rate of fluid release from partially saturated fibrous sheets in a time and cost-effective manner. Moreover, the ability of the model has been extended to simulate the radial spreading of liquids in thin fibrous sheets. By simulating different fibrous sheets with identical parameters but different in-plane fiber orientations has revealed that the rate of fluid spread increases with increasing the in-plane alignment of the fibers. Additionally, we have developed a semi-analytical modeling approach that can be used to predict the fluid absorption and release characteristics of multi-layered composite fabric made up of porous (swelling) and soild (non-swelling) fibrous sheets. The sheets capillary pressure and relative permeability are obtained via a combination of numerical simulations and experiment. In particular, the capillary pressure for swelling media is obtained via height rise experiments. The relative permeability expressions are obtained from the analytical expressions previously developed with the 3-D microscale simulations, which are also in agreement with experimental correlations from the literature. To extend the ability of the model, we have developed a diffusion-controlled boundary treatment to simulate fluid release from partially-saturated fabrics onto surfaces with different hydrophilicy. Using a custom made test rig, experimental data is obtained for the release of liquid from partially saturated PET and Rayon nonwoven sheets at different speeds, and on two different surfaces. It is demonstrated that the new semi-empirical model redeveloped in this work can predict the rate of fluid release from wet nonwoven sheets as a function of time.
