Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irene the Missionary At all events, she had reason to be thankful that the loneliness and quietude of her girlish life had led her to pass much time in her father's library, and to read there more of history than most young ladies know. The result of this poring over Plutarch, Rollin, and the Classical Dictionary was that now, as she sailed through the Egean, with the sable mountain shores of Ionia on one hand, and the many-hued, abrupt Cyclades on the other, she saw far more than was visible to the naked eye. She saw races and kingdoms and glories of famous ages; she saw the grace and splendor and power of Hellas and Persia and Rome; she saw the sublime past brooding over the beautiful present. Download or read book Letters to a Missionary (Classic Reprint) written by R. F. Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Missionary It seems desirable to explain the circumstances under which the following Letters came to be written. Early in 1917 I received a circular letter from the Rev. Stanley P. Smith, a missionary stationed at Tsehchowfu, in the south-east of the Chinese province of Shansi. In this letter Mr. Smith states that as long ago as 1885 he became the leader of a small party of young men (known as "the Cambridge Seven") who decided to devote their lives to missionary work in China. For seventeen years Mr. Smith worked in connexion with the well-known society known as the China Inland Mission, and then (about the year 1902) was asked to retire from the Mission owing to his "views on eschatology" - in other words, his refusal to believe in an everlasting hell. According to Mr. Smith's own belief, "eternal punishment" is an undoubted truth, because clearly taught in the Bible; he denies, however, that the term translated by the word "eternal" necessarily means "everlasting." Download or read book Missionary Readings for Missionary Programs (Classic Reprint) written by Belle M. Brain and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Readings for Missionary Programs Modern missionary literature abounds in thrilling incident, graphically told. Nowhere can be found better material for the missionary elocutionist than in the books which record the heroic deeds of those new apostles of the faith, whose achievements might well form added chapters to the Book of Acts. In their original setting, however, the stories of missionary experience are, as a rule, much too long for practical use; hence the present volume in which the selections have been condensed sufficiently to bring them within the time limit necessary for the ordinary missionary gathering. The twenty-five readings herewith given cover a wide range of topics, including tragedy and comedy, pathos and humor. Not all of them are suitable for use on the Lord's day; some are only appropriate for the social missionary hour. All, however, have their mission, being profitable for inspiration, instruction or entertainment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
