Book excerpt: A search for undiscovered particles decaying into top-antitop quark pairs produced in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider utilizing 20.3 fb$^-1$ of data collected at $\sqrt{s}=8$ \tev\ center-of-mass energy during the 2012 data taking period is presented. The invariant mass spectrum of events containing multiple jets, exactly one lepton, and missing transverse energy and which are consistent with the decay of a top-antitop quark pair is studied and found to be consistent with that predicted by the Standard Model. Upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio of several benchmark signal models are set at a 95\% confidence level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry is at an exciting stage of development. It extends the Standard Model of particle physics into a more powerful theory that both explains more and allows more questions to be addressed. Most important, it opens a window for studying and testing fundamental theories at the Planck scale. Experimentally we are finally entering the intensity and energy regions where superpartners are likely to be detected, and then studied. There has been progress in understanding the remarkable physics implications of supersymmetry, including the derivation of the Higgs mechanism, the unification of the Standard Model forces, cosmological connections such as a candidate for the cold dark matter of the universe and the scalar fields that drive inflation and their potential, the relationship to Planck scale theories, and more. While there are a number of reviews and books where the mathematical structure and uses of supersymmetry can be learned, there are few where the particle physics is the main focus. This book fills that gap. It begins with an excellent pedagogical introduction to the physics and methods and formalism of supersymmetry, by S Martin, which is accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of the Standard Model of particle physics. Next is an overview of open questions by K Dienes and C Kolda, followed by chapters on topics ranging from how to detect superpartners to connections with Planck scale theories, by leading experts. This invaluable book will allow any interested physicist to understand the coming experimental and theoretical progress in supersymmetry, and will also help students and workers to quickly learn new aspects of supersymmetry they want to pursue.

This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The start of the Large Hadron Collider provides an unprecedent opportunity for the exploration of physics at the TeV scale. It is expected to perform precise tests of the structure of the Standard Model and to hint at the structure of the physical laws at a more fundamental level. The first part of this work describes a tune of the initial- and final- state radiation parameters in the Pythia8 Monte Carlo generator, using ATLAS measurements of ttbar production at 7 TeV. The results are compared to previous tunes to the Z boson transverse momentum at the LHC, and to the LEP event shapes in Z boson hadronic decays, testing of the universality of the parton shower model. The tune of Pythia8 to the ttbar measurements is applied to the next-to-leading or- der generators MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and Powheg, and additional parameters of these generators are tuned to the ttbar data. For the first time in the context of Monte Carlo tuning, the correlation of the experimental uncertainties has been used to constrain the parameters of the Monte Carlo models. In the second section we report results of a model independent search for new phenomena with data recorded by the ATLAS detector at 8 TeV. Event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, jets, b-jets and missing transverse momentum are investigated. The events are subdivided according to their final states into 697 exclusive analysis channels. For each channel, a search algorithm tests the compatibility of the effective mass distribution in data against the distribution in the Monte Carlo simulated background. No significant deviations between data and the Standard Model expectations have been observed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hierarchy Problem is arguably the most important guiding principle concerning the extension to high-energy scales of the Standard Model (SM) of Fundamental Interactions. Every scenario for addressing this issue unavoidably predicts new physics in the TeV energy range, which is currently being probed directly by the LHC experimental program. Among the possible solutions to the Hierarchy Problem, the scenario of a composite Higgs boson is a very simple idea and a rather plausible picture has emerged over the years by combining the following ingredients: First, the Higgs must be a (pseudo-) Nambu-Goldstone boson, rather than a generic hadron of the new strong sector. Second, through the so-called ‘partial compositeness’, SM particles mix with strong sector resonances with suitable quantum numbers, so that they become a linear combination of elementary and composite degrees of freedom. Recently, general descriptions of the Composite Higgs Scenario were developed which successfully capture the relevant features of this theoretical framework in a largely model-independent way. The present book provides a concise and illustrative introduction to the subject for a broad audience of graduate students and non-specialist researchers in the fields of particle, nuclear and gravitational physics.

Book excerpt: A measurement of the production cross section for a top quark pair in association with a Z boson (ttZ) is presented in this PhD thesis. Final states with exactly three charged leptons (electrons or muons) are used, taking into account the decay of the top quark pair in the lepton+jets channel and the decay of the Z boson into two charged leptons. The dataset used for this analysis corresponds to 36.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded during 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The result of a profile likelihood fit ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry (SUSY) is a new symmetry that relates bosons and fermions, which has strong support at both the mathematical and the physical level. This book offers a comprehensive review, following the development of SUSY from its very early days up to present. The order of the contributions should provide the reader with the historical development as well as the latest theoretical updates and interpretations, and experimental constraints from particle accelerators and dark matter searches. It is a great pleasure to bring together here contributions from authors who initiated or have contributed significantly to the development of this theory over so many years. To present a balanced point of view, the book also includes a closing contribution that attempts to describe the physics beyond the Standard Model in the absence of SUSY. The contributions to this book have been previously published in The European Physical Journal C - Particles and Fields.

Book excerpt: We performed a search for"non-standard model tt resonances in the all jets final state channel." The main goal was to examine top-antitop invariant mass spectrum for the presence of narrow resonant states. The data analysis used 2.8fb-1 of CDF data; events were produced at the Tevatron collider in pp collisions with center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. 2086 data events were analyzed and compared to Standard Model expectation. No evidence for new tt resonant production mechanisms was found. Upper limits were placed on the cross-section times branching ratio for resonance production at 805 GeV/c2. For signal modeling we considered leptophobic Z' boson in a topcolor-assisted technicolor model with the width of [Gamma] = 1.2%MX0.

Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of review articles on the most outstanding topics in heavy flavour physics. All the authors have made significant contributions to this field. The book reviews in detail the theoretical structure of heavy flavour physics within the Standard Model and its confrontation with existing experimental data. The physics of the top quark and of the Higgs play an important role in this volume. Beginning with radiative electroweak corrections and their impressive tests at LEP and hadron colliders, the book summarizes the present status of quark mixing, CP violation and rare decays. The dynamics of exclusive D- and B-meson decays, the τ-lepton physics and the newly discovered heavy quark symmetries are discussed in detail. The impact of strong interactions on weak decays is clearly visible in many articles. The physics of heavy flavours at LEP, HERA and hadron colliders constitutes an important part of the book. Another significant topic is the possible role of heavy flavours in the spontaneous symmetry breaking of gauge symmetries. Finally the most recent advances in lattice calculations of the properties of heavy flavours and the lattice studies of the dynamics of heavy flavours are presented.
