Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique overview of research on dyslexia and an account of the underlying causes at cognitive, brain, and neural system levels that provides a framework for significant progress in the understanding of dyslexia and other related learning disabilities. Dyslexia research has made dramatic progress since the mid-1980s. Once discounted as a “middle-class myth,” dyslexia is now the subject of a complex—and confusing—body of theoretical and empirical research. In Dyslexia, Learning, and the Brain, leading dyslexia researchers Roderick Nicolson and Angela Fawcett provide a uniquely broad and coherent analysis of dyslexia theory. Unlike most dyslexia research, which addresses the question “what is the cause of the reading disability called dyslexia?” the authors' work has addressed the deeper question of “what is the cause of the learning disability that manifests as reading problems?” This perspective allows them to place dyslexia research within the much broader disciplines of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience and has led to a rich framework, including two established leading theories, the automatization deficit account (1990) and the cerebellar deficit hypothesis (2001). Nicolson and Fawcett show that extensive evidence has accumulated to support these two theories and that they may be seen as subsuming the established phonological deficit account and sensory processing accounts. Moving to the explanatory level of neural systems, they argue that all these disorders reflect problems in some component of the procedural learning system, a multiregion system including major components of cortical and subcortical regions. The authors' answer to the fundamental question “what is dyslexia?” offers a challenge and motivation for research throughout the learning disabilities, laying the foundations for future progress.
Book Synopsis Dyslexia and ADHD - The Miracle Cure by : Wynford Dore
Download or read book Dyslexia and ADHD - The Miracle Cure written by Wynford Dore and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the astounding story of how one man's quest to help his daughter led to the start of a whole new way of treating learning and attention difficulties. When she was only nine years old, Susie Dore was diagnosed as dyslexic and told that nothing could be done to help her. Her increasing depression eventually led to three suicide attempts. Wynford decided that enough was enough and set about finding a way to help her. Wynford sold his multi-million pound business and ploughed his fortune into research into dyslexia and learning difficulties. His team of researchers showed that, almost invariably, these problems are caused by an incomplete physiological development and that an answer to them might be found in a specialised exercise programme. This revolutionary book will change the way dyslexia and ADHD are approached forever. It explains the theory behind the ideas and, through a series of case studies, demonstrates the success stories and how these ideas have changed the lives of so many for good. It is invaluable reading for anyone involved with or affected by dyslexia or any other learning difficulty. Prepare to have your preconceptions shattered and be amazed...
Book Synopsis Feeling Smarter and Smarter by : Harold N. Levinson, MD
Download or read book Feeling Smarter and Smarter written by Harold N. Levinson, MD and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking book, Dr. Harold Levinson, a renowned psychiatrist and clinical researcher, provides his long-awaited follow-up work about truly understanding and successfully treating children and adults with many and diverse dyslexia-related disorders such as those found on the cover. This fascinating, life-changing title is primarily about helping children who suffer from varied combinations and severities of previously unexplained inner-ear-determined symptoms resulting in difficulties with: reading, writing, spelling, math, memory, speech, sense of direction and time grammar, concentration/activity-level, balance and coordination headaches, nausea, dizziness, ringing ears, and motion-sickness frustration levels and feeling dumb, ugly, klutzy, phobic, and depressed impulsivity, cutting class, dropping out of school, and substance abuse bullying and being bullied as well as anger and social interactions later becoming emotionally traumatized and scarred dysfunctional adults Feeling Smarter and Smarter is thus also about and for the millions of frus-trated and failing adults who are often overwhelmed by similar and even more complicated symptoms—as well as for their dedicated healers. Having laid the initial foundations for his many current insights in an earlier bestseller, Smart But Feeling Dumb, Dr. Levinson now presents a compelling range of enlightening new cases and data as well as a large number of highly original discoveries—such as his challenging illumination that all dyslexia-related manifestations are primarily inner-ear or cerebellar-vestibular—not cerebrally—determined and so do not impair IQ, and an “ingeniously simple” explanatory theory of symptom formation. Most important, all the dyslexia/inner-ear based impairments and their symptoms were discovered by Dr. Levinson to respond rapidly and often “mi-raculously” in 75 to 85 percent of cases when treated with simple and safe inner-ear enhancing medications—thus enabling bright but dumb-feeling children and adults to feel... smarter and smarter.

Book Synopsis The LCP Solution by : B. Jacqueline Stordy, Ph.D.
Download or read book The LCP Solution written by B. Jacqueline Stordy, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2000-09-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book documents a major breakthrough in the treatment of the three most widespread learning disabilities--ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia ("clumsy child syndrome"). Although these conditions have reached epidemic proportions, treatment has been limited to ineffective behavioral therapies or the controversial prescription drug Ritalin. Now Dr. B. Jacqueline Stordy, a leading researcher in the field, reveals a stunning new treatment based on a simple nutritional supplement: LCP (long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids). The LCP Solution is the first book to describe this new natural treatment and to explain how children (and adults) can incorporate it into their daily lives. As a member of a family with a long history of dyslexia, Dr. Stordy discovered in a pioneering experiment that dyslexic and dyspraxic children who began taking a dietary supplement consisting of LCP experienced dramatic transformations in the quality of their lives. At the same time, parallel studies conducted at Purdue University came up with similar results with children who had ADHD. The effect of this dietary supplement was nothing short of revolutionary: after only a few weeks, dyslexic and ADHD children became calmer, more focused, easier to teach, while dyspraxics improved significantly in dexterity and balance, showing markedly less anxiety. In The LCP Solution, Dr. Stordy documents how this life-changing treatment came about and explains step-by-step how sufferers of each of the three major conditions can use it to change their lives at home, at school, and at work. Illuminating, vividly presented, and authoritative in its findings, this book will revolutionize our approach to learning disabilities. LCPs are natural, simple to use, and amazing in their benefits. If you or someone you love suffers from a learning disability, this book is essential reading.

Book Synopsis The Sign of the Fish by : Emmalou Kirchmeier
Download or read book The Sign of the Fish written by Emmalou Kirchmeier and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inevitable, absorbing, yet invigorating world of the chaplaincy awaits. This objective journey into The Sign of the Fish begins in 1770, on a Massachusetts bridge. By comparing real cases in therapeutic settings or witnessing great personal changes the chaplain deals with, much is learned. Today's chaplain covers cases from hospital to campuses, from military bases to prisons, from retirement homes to sports arenas, to shipboard, hospice and abroad; volunteer or professional, all are trained. A chaplain's obedience is to the God each serves. Read why the chaplain asks, "And how did that make you feel?"--the answer that allows withheld tears and feelings to flow. A newspaper reporter's style keeps the book informative but simple, honest but confidential, allowing participation in the conflict and debate that introduces the field of bio-ethics. The book, in its later segment, introduces ancient religions. The spiritual attitudes of the eight chaplains and two professional writers, a professor and a nurse, give the book the special ambiance they gained from their religious experiences. A one-time student of Professor Elie Wiesel at Boston University, the author's humanizing of spiritual care was well learned. She chose her contributors well. Carefully explained is why each of the chaplain's venues required additional training in the ancient religions in this ecumenical world. Of special interest are the images on loan from Irlen Institute that explain the frequently undiagnosed perception difficulties of our non-readers in elementary schools and into our colleges and businesses. One New England hospital with an entire floor empty brought in reading specialists to work with the community's non-readers of all ages. Many industrial firms now test for scotopic sensitivity before hiring.

Download or read book Dyslexia written by Oliver P. Moynihan and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have devoted considerable attention to how people learn to read, specifically how they recognise, pronounce, and understand printed words. These studies are helping to illuminate not only the normal process of learning to read but also the problems that may underlie dyslexia, a condition in which people are unable to acquire a high degree of reading skill despite adequate intelligence and training. When reading instruction begins, children (as well as adult learners) already possess large spoken-word vocabularies. Their initial task is to learn how these spoken words correspond to written alphabetic symbols. Impairments in this reading skill are often seen among children who have problems learning in school. Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding.
