Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of Tennessee This book is written from the modern point of view with reference to the proper interpretation of history. Much of our history is almost exclusively political history. It is little more than an account of public officials and a description of battles. History, as properly construed, is an interpretation of the whole life of a people. It is as much the duty of a historian to interpret the industrial life, the educational life, the social life, and the religions life of a people, as it is to interpret their political life. Certainly children should not get the idea that wars and politics constitute the whole of history. Much of the material herein used is original. It has been obtained through original investigation and research, and has never before been published. Many facts used were gotten from histories of Tennessee by Ramsay, Haywood, and Garrett and Goodpasture. These splendid books contain a veritable storehouse of valuable historical material and will hold an important place in the history of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Tennessee, Its People and Its Institutions The competent teacher of history demands of the text-book two essential qualities: Firsf. The text-book must contain a clear statement of all mate rial facts, and an adequate discussion of all important topics, arranged in such consecutive order as to cover the subject completely, and to connect all the parts in logical sequence. There must be no missing link in the chain of events. The author of the text-book does not share in the licen>e accorded to the general writer. He has no right to dilate on favorite or sensational topics to the omission or exclusion of essential links in the chain of history. In order to cover the subject in all its parts, it is necessary that the style be concise and the scope be comprehensive. If the text-book be defective in this first essential quality, no rhetorical excellence or charm of style can cure the defect. Second. In connection with the statement of each important fact, and the discussion of each important topic, the text-book must supply carefully selected page references to the sources of information, and to the best authorities in which the subject is treated more in detail than the restrictions of a school-book will permit. The skillful teacher makes this demand of the text-book, because he needs it as an aid to himself and a guide to the pupil, in order to accomplish the best results. He knows that the limitations of the school-term will not permit him to do more than lay the foundation upon which the pupil, himself, in future years must build the superstructure. If the teacher is ambitious that his teaching shall live in the future lives of his pupils, he looks beyond the school-room, and is not content to prepare his pupils only for the next recitation, or the next examination. If he aims to train lovers Of history, or readers of history, or writers of history, he must give his pupils, at least, a glimpse of the rich and varied field of historical literature, with some training towards forming the habit of historical research, and some practice in the methods of historical investigation. The text-book should aid in this work by supplying references. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Prospectus: Tennessee School for the Blind This introduction to the History and Prospectus of the Tennessee School for the Blind may contain little that is not found in the body of the work, and the most that its author hopes for it is that it may serve to direct attention to the wise observations of Professor Armstrong and to the data which he presents. If it should help to secure for Professor Armstrong's able presentation of a most interesting subject the attention and sympathy of thoughtful people, the motive that inspired it will have been fully satisfied. Its records show how, from a small beginning, the Tennessee School for the Blind has grown to vast proportions. Its history illustrates what such a beginning, inaugurated by one who was bereft of sight but who inspired his cause, may become in time, by intelligent, unselfish, and continuous attention, and by the generous support of public-spirited citizens and of the law makers of a great State as well. Much more might have been done with more ample means at the disposal of the Trustees and the Superintendents, but all this can be made good by more generous aid from the State Legislature in the future. The intelligent citizens of Tennessee, no less than the law-makers of the State, will read with profit and satisfaction the contents of this volume, and, having read it with the care and attention it deserves, they will give to an institution which has done so much in the past for a sadly afflicted class of our fellow beings the means with which to accomplish even greater results in the future. Let this volume, prepared with so much care, displaying so much thought and study, and presenting an array of facts and figures of such engaging interest as to make the reader forget almost that this is not a work of fiction, find its way silently into every heart and home in Tennessee. And let it be remem bered that Professor Armstrong, Superintendent of the School for the Blind, who is himself deprived of the blessing of sight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Tennessee From 1663 to 1900: For Use in Schools The people who live in Tennessee, who have made it a civilized country, and who have made its history, are the children, grandchildren, etc., of people who came from Europe and settled in America. Before the days of Columbus the people of Europe knew nothing of Amer ica. They had never heard of such a country. In 1492 Columbus sailed from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean and discovered some of the islands of the West Indies. He afterward discovered South America, but he never saw North America. No people except savages, that Columbus called Indians, then lived in America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Tennessee: The Making of a State The history of a State, judged by the political discus sions between aspirants for state offices, is merely a result ing incident of the history of the United States. There have been in the history of Tennessee questions of local policy important enough to cause division among the voters of the State. But, apart from the state debt, the time and attention accorded the discussion of this class of ques tions has been altogether insignificant in comparison with the overwhelming importance attached to questions of national politics. The reason of this is neither hard to find nor of remote origin. The ultimate decision of all local questions is in the immediate power of the State. Any mistake can easily be rectified, and results can be promptly changed. But the case was and is difterent in national affairs. Here the State is but one of many factors, and any decision involving its welfare is more permanent in its nature and less liable to be changed, should a change be desirable. This is the main reason. In addition to this, there is more fascination in the discussion of a ques tion which occupies the minds and hearts of forty mil lions of people than in the discussion of a question which merely involves one and one's neighbor. This being the case, a state history cannot entirely ignore national politics. But the opposite extreme is more vicious still. The real history of a state, especially Tennessee, is to be found within its own limits. Each State having an organized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Tennessee: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time The want here indicated is now about being sup plied; and, as the task of doing so is no light or superficial one, the publishers have given into the hands of the two gentlemen whose names appear in the title-page, the work of preparing a series of cabi net histories, embracing a volume for each state in the Union. Of their ability to perform this well, we need not speak. They are no strangers in the literary world. What they undertake the public may rest assured will be performed thoroughly; and that no sectarian, sectional, or party feelings will bias their judgment, or lead them to violate the integrity of history. The importance of a series of state histories like those now commenced, can scarcely be estimated. Being condensed as carefully as accuracy and interest of narrative will permit, the size and price of the volumes will bring them within the reach of every family in the country, thus making them home-read ing books for old and young. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause of Education in Tennessee Young Gentlemen: Your academical career is now ended; and you have just received the usual honors and testimonials of this institution. According to the opinion which too generally prevails, you have completed your studies. This, I am persuaded, is not your own opinion. You have already made a juster estimate of your attainments; and of.the vast and variegated field for future investigation which still lies before you, and which invites your assiduous cultivation. If you have learned how to study, and have acquired a thirst for knowledge, you will continue to study and to learn while you live. This, indeed, is the grand aim and object of all elementary education. It is to discipline the mind, to develop faculty, to mature the judgment, to refine the taste, to chasten the moral sense, to awaken and invigorate intellectual energy; and to furnish the requisite materials upon which to erect the noblest superstructure. Hitherto, you have been laying the foundation; and serving that kind of apprenticeship which may enable you to march forward by your own diligent and persevering efforts, Do not imagine, therefore, that your work is done. You have only commenced your studies. - Whatever may be your future profession, pursuit, business or destination, let books, science, literature, be your constant companions. Every man, who intends to do the greatest possible good in his day and generation, will, every day, seek to acquire additional information. He will gather it from every source within his reach. His experience, his observation, his intercourse with the world, with men and things, his daily occupations, his incidental associations, the great volume of nature, ever open and spread out to his view, the intellectual treasures of a hundred generations which have passed away, the records of heavenly truth and wisdom - all will conspire to increase his stores, and to qualify him for a greater and a wider sphere of useful and virtuous exertion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church in the Diocese of Tennessee When the present writer was appointed at the Sixty-sixth Annual Convention of the Church in the Diocese of Tennessee Historiographer of the Diocese, in succession to the Rev. George White, DD, and Mr. P. M. Radford, he supposed that he could best fulfil the duties of the office by digesting the mass of material collected by the patient and intelligent industry of his predeces sors, and by preparing therefrom a comprehen sive account of the progress of the Church in Tennessee, which would be of interest outside of the narrow circle of ecclesiastical antiquaries. It was with deep regret, therefore, that he learned that the materials collected by the Rev. Dr. White had been scattered and lost; that the like fate had overtaken some valuable historical papers prepared by the Rev. Dr. Gray, now Bishop of Southern Florida; and that such disposition was made of the papers of the late Mr. Radford as to defeat the ends which that indefatigable collator of historical data had in view throughout his labors as historiographer. The present writer would have been quite content to have appeared before the reader as the editor of Mr. Radford's work, and the pursuit of such a course wouldundoubtedly have enhanced the merit of the present history. But the author has been denied access to any of his predecessor's work, save what has been published in the Diocesan Journals since 1887. Under these circumstances, the author has sought the greater part of his material in the jour nals of the diocese; but he has extended his in quiry to many other volumes treating of various phases of the history of Tennessee, and he has likewise sought much information by correspond ence. To those who have kindly assisted him in his work he here makes his most grateful acknowledgments. That the book may be kept within the limits set for it from the beginning, he refrains from more specific reference to the authorities consulted or to those who have, by contributing information, rendered assistance. The reader will perceive the propriety, however, of mentioning Mrs. Donna Otey Compton, who has kindly placed at the author's disposal her father's private journals and many papers which have been of inestimable service. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
