Book Synopsis Scanning Electron Microscopy Studies of Dental Enamel by : Seymour Hoffman
Download or read book Scanning Electron Microscopy Studies of Dental Enamel written by Seymour Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samples of sound, untreated enamel and enamel subjected to a number of different treatment procedures were selected for this study, to determine the potential of the scanning electron micro-scope as applied to the study of dental tissue. Sound enamel specimens were treated with acetate buffer (pH 4.0) and with EDTA (pH 7.94) for varying periods of time. The results were compared to those obtained from sound, untreated enamel specimens. Surface and sub-surface enamel morphology and bacteria-like structures were examined, photographed at magnifications ranging from 20X to over 100,000X, and described in relation to the ultra-structural morphology of enamel. Structures resembling enamel prisms, the 'prism-less' zone of surface enamel, the surface covering of an 'enamel skin' and sequential patterns of acid demineralization occuring preferentially down prism cores are described and illustrated. Comparison with EDTA-treated specimens revealed peripheral dissolution of enamel rods, in contrast to the acid effects. Organic surface coverings suggestive of dental plaque and microbial forms resembling cocci and lactobacilli were also shown. (Author).

Book Synopsis SEM Picture Book of Untreated & Treated Human Enamel & Dentin by : Ralf Janda
Download or read book SEM Picture Book of Untreated & Treated Human Enamel & Dentin written by Ralf Janda and published by tredition. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents 573 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) pictures of differently designed, untreated and treated human tooth specimens of molars and incisors in magnifications of more than 50,000 times. The specimens were made from permanent sound, caries-free teeth that were extracted for orthodontic reasons. Sawing and fracture areas were prepared. Treatments were done with phosphoric acid, polyacrylic acid, EDTA, sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid esters. Many unique pictures show the detailed structures of untreated and treated human enamel and dentin. This collection of SEM pictures might be quite unique in the world. This picture book is ideal for teaching purposes. The pictures are not discussed or interpreted, but it is only explained what is seen.

Book Synopsis Tooth Development in Human Evolution and Bioarchaeology by : Simon Hillson
Download or read book Tooth Development in Human Evolution and Bioarchaeology written by Simon Hillson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human children grow at a uniquely slow pace by comparison with other mammals. When and where did this schedule evolve? Have technological advances, farming and cities had any effect upon it? Addressing these and other key questions in palaeoanthropology and bioarchaeology, Simon Hillson examines the unique role of teeth in preserving detailed microscopic records of development throughout childhood and into adulthood. The text critically reviews theory, assumptions, methods and literature, providing the dental histology background to anthropological studies of both growth rate and growth disruption. Chapters also examine existing studies of growth rate in the context of human evolution and primate development more generally, together with implications for life history. The final chapters consider how defects in the tooth development sequence shed light on the consequences of biological and social transitions, contributing to our understanding of the evolution of modern human development and cognition.

This book was released on 2007-09-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the volume is to bring together, in one collection, the most innovative dental anthropological research as it pertains to the study of hominid evolution. In the past few decades both the numbers of hominid dental fossils and the sophistication of the techniques used to analyze them have increased substantially. The book’s contributions focus on dental morphometrics, growth and development, diet and dental evolution.
Book Synopsis Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton by : M. Anne Katzenberg
Download or read book Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton written by M. Anne Katzenberg and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-23 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is virtually required reading for biological anthropologists and will be a useful, up-to-date primer on osteological analyses for a wider audience." —The Quarterly Review of Biology, March 2009 "... a comprehensive guide to the ever-changing discipline of physical anthropology... provides an in depth introduction to human skeletal biology. The structure of the book makes it easy for the reader to follow the progression of the field of human skeletal biology." —PaleoAnthropology, 2009 Issue The First Edition of Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton is the market-leading reference and textbook on the scientific analysis of human skeletal remains recovered from archaeological sites. Now, featuring scores of new or thoroughly revised content, this Second Edition provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the topic available. Like the previous edition, this Second Edition is organized into five parts with contributing chapters written by experts in the field of human skeletal biology: Part One covers theory and application; Part Two discusses morphological analyses of bone, teeth, and age changes; Part Three reviews prehistoric health and disease; Part Four examines chemical and genetic analysis of hard tissues; and Part Five closes with coverage of quantitative methods and population studies. Each chapter includes a review of recent studies, descriptions of analytical techniques and underlying assumptions, theory, methodological advances, and speculation about future research. New or thoroughly revised content includes: Techniques in the analysis of human skeletal and dental remains Extensive coverage of new technologies, including modern morphometric techniques Advances in the field of forensic anthropology Enhanced discussion of ethical terms regarding the study of aboriginal peoples' remains where those people are no longer the dominant culture This book serves as an indispensable research guide to biological anthropologists, osteologists, paleoanthropologists, and archaeologists. Now with a stronger focus on teaching complex material to students, this revised edition provides enhanced case studies and discussions for future directions, making it an invaluable textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in biological anthropology and forensic anthropology programs.
