Book excerpt: An extortion letter arrives at Crystal Waters, one of Chicago's wealthiest gated communities. It makes no specific threats, gives no instructions, demands only that $50,000 be gotten ready---chump change for an enclave where the cheapest house is worth three million. It's easy to see it as harmless---a note from a nut. Then a mansion explodes. The homeowners panic, and want it hushed up. If word gets out that a bomber is targeting Crystal Waters, their multimillion-dollar homes will become worthless, a last catastrophe for people strung out from living the good life too well. They hire Dek Elstrom to investigate. Dek Elstrom used to soar high, too, when he lived with his multimillionaire wife at Crystal Waters, but that was before the dominos of his life tipped over and his ex-wife threw him out. Now reduced to living in a crumbling stone turret, bankrupt of everything but attitude, he's not even his own ideal choice for the job. He's too broke, however, to question the motives of a gift-horse client. He needs the money---and the chance to reconnect with his ex-wife. Another bomb goes off, and Dek realizes the culprit must be someone who is angry, needs money, and used to live at Crystal Waters. Then he realizes something else. He himself is the prime suspect. A sly and clever caper among the richest of the rich, A Safe Place for Dying is for fans of Carl Hiaasen and Robert Crais.

Book excerpt: He Abused Her Body... Everyone who knew them thought stunning Farah Fratta and her husband Robert, a firefighter and public safety officer, had it all--a solid, nine-year marriage, three beautiful children, and a comfortable house in a middle class Houston suburb. But behind closed doors, Robert's deviant sexual appetites trapped Farah in a world of sick perversity...until she filed for divorce in 1992. Her Terrorized Her In Her Own Home... During a bitter custody suit, Farah bravely recounted--in graphic detail--her husband's bizarre sexual demands, which the presiding judge called the most depraved behavior he'd ever heard. Then Fratt'a behavior turned violent. Hoping to intimate his wife into dropping the proceedings against him, he hired an ex-con to brutally rape and torture her with a stun gun. Two years after the case began, the court was about to rule in Farah's favor...and seal her fate. Then He Took Her Life... On the night of November 9, 1994, as an unsuspecting Farah stepped out of her car, a man wearing a black ski mask emerged from the backyard and pumped two lethal bullets into her head. Charged with Farah's murder, Fratta tried to use a visit with his children as an alibi. Instead, he and two others were convicted of the bloody plot and sentenced to die by lethal injection.

She would do anything to protect the innocent children in her care. But soon they could be sent into danger... When Clara Newton's fiancé died during World War Two, she thought her life was over. But now she looks after orphans who, like her, lost everything during the war. Children like sweet little Peg who won't speak, and Joyce whose body was scarred by polio. Clara loves them all dearly, even though life as a housemother can be lonely - especially now that Ivor, a D-Day war hero with dark brown eyes who once helped with the children, has disappeared... But then Clara receives some terrible news. The orphanage is going to be sold and the children sent far away. Joyce and Peg will be taken to a notorious home for disabled children. The others will be sent to Australia, where Clara fears they will be mistreated by unknown families. Any day now, the children could lose everything she worked so hard to provide... With wealthy buyers lined up to purchase Shilling Grange and a ship already docked waiting to carry the children away, Clara is desperate. She must find loving new homes for them quickly, but time is running out... Can she save the orphans before they lose everything all over again? And even if Ivor returns when she needs him the most, will it be too late? A completely heart-wrenching and unforgettable historical novel, set after the devastation of World War Two. "Home is the place where our life stories begin. It is where we are understood, embraced, and accepted. It is a sanctuary of safety and security, a place to which we can always return. Down in the dank basement, amidst my moldy, hoarded food and beloved worm-eaten books, I dreamed that my real home, the place where my story had begun, was out there somewhere, and one day I was going to find it." Taken from his mother at age three, Steve Klakowicz lives a terrifying existence. Caught in the clutches of a cruel foster family and subjected to constant abuse, he finds his only refuge in a box of books gifted to him by a kind stranger. In these books, he discovers new worlds he can only imagine and gains hope that one day he might have a different life, that one day he will find his true home. Armed with just a single clue, Steve embarks on an extraordinary quest for his identity, only to find that nothing is as it appears. A Chance in the World is the unbelievable true story of a broken boy destined to become a man of resilience, determination, and vision. Through it all, Steve's story teaches us that no matter how broken our past, we have it in us to create a new beginning and to build a new place, where love awaits.

Book excerpt: Hiroshi Kono is eight years old and only just beginning to question the racial and economic inequities he sees around him, when he and his family--along with 120,000 other Japanese Americans--are packed off to a concentration camp run by the US government. The harsh and barren world of the Arizona desert where Hiroshi and his family find themselves sets sibling against sibling, parent against child and neighbor against neighbor in a complex grappling with duty and disappointment that will reverberate through the ensuing decades. Sexual initiation, kabuki tales, jazz clubs and alcoholism form the backdrop against which Hiroshi, his siblings and his parents struggle to define themselves. Whether describing Hiroshi's tumultuous postwar coming of age or excavating generational grievances exacerbated by internment, Gene Oishi gives heartbreaking and at times humorous context to the life of a family set adrift by its wartime experiences.

Book excerpt: For most of her life, Christa Hernandez had no safe place to call home. Brutally abused, sexually molested, and constantly hopping from house to house as her life turned inside out over and over again, Christa grew up without knowing the meaning of home or of unconditional love. She struggled with her faith, struggled with her self-worth, and literally ended up at a train station with her life in garbage bags. That horrific childhood turned her into a prime candidate for predators in the sex trafficking industry. Christa's account of escaping that nightmare, finding herself, and restoring her relationship with God, is compelling and unforgettable. At its core, Christa's honest portrayal of her victory over her past is a story of strength and hope. Readers from all walks of life will draw inspiration from her amazing journey.

Book excerpt: From the Publisher: Christina Crawford's devastating memoir Mommie Dearest (over 5,000,000 sold), first as book and later as Hollywood film, made the American public aware of violence in the family. In No Safe Place, drawing further on her personal story, but adding sociological research and case histories, the author shows how family violence is responsible for addictive behavior, depression, sleep disorders, chronic illness, suicide, delinquency, homelessness, and apparently "mindless" violent crime. A call to action, this impassioned book offers the hope that in facing the truth about our families we can save our society and ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the onset of the mortgage lending crisis and the subsequent Great Recession, there has been ongoing debate about the economic benefits of homeownership. Some say homeownership remains an important contributor to wealth creation, while others believe that renting is a less expensive and less risky option. This debate has raised an interesting question about homeownership: if the home is not guaranteed to provide a solid return on investment, is there a rationale for promoting homeownership beyond whatever financial benefits it may deliver? The authors' research has provided tremendous insights into the extra-financial effects of affordable homeownership. It shows that homeowners, when compared with renters, have better health outcomes, experience less stress in times of financial hardship, experience a greater sense of trust in their neighbors, have access to more social capital resources, and are more likely to vote. Further, the data allows us to explore not only what benefits result from affordable homeownership, but how and why these benefits are transferred. The book ultimately argues that homeownership is not only important for financial reasons, but also functions as a social tool that can improve the lives of low- and moderate-income people.
