Book Synopsis Memories of a Vanished Time by : Robert Blumenfeld
Download or read book Memories of a Vanished Time written by Robert Blumenfeld and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-12-27 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother, Ruth Blumenfeld, née Korn, was born on January 15, 1915; and died on August 18, 2015, aged one hundred years, seven months, and three days. My father, Max David Blumenfeld, was born on February 25, 1911 and died on December 26, 1994, about two months shy of his eighty-fourth birthday... I love my parents so much and I don’t want them to be forgotten, which is why I am writing this book. And I am writing this memoir for myself as much as for anyone else, because in doing so I bring my parents back to life in my memory. I do the same when it comes to my grandparents and aunts and uncles. I write also for my family members, who may wish to know more about our background. And I am writing for the general public, who may find this memoir of interest as being the embodiment in specific people of the history of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in the United States... When my father was born, World War One was several years away, and when my mother was born, World War One was raging. They lived through the Roaring Twenties and Prohibition, the Great Depression, and World War Two, and the subsequent wars... They lived through the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. The technological changes in their lifetime were the greatest in human history, from the evolution and ubiquity of the telephone, and of electricity and electric lighting, to airplane travel and the proliferation of the automobile, the invention and spread of radio and television, and the invention of such conveniences as frozen orange juice, the electric clothes drier, and the electric dishwasher, and, later on, of the internet, the computer and the smartphone, and of so much more... The world was a better place because Mom and Dad were in it. They did much political and social good in their time because they cared, and they wanted to help create a kinder, better, more loving world for everyone, a world where the ideals of equality and justice for all would at least begin to be fulfilled. When people like them disappear from the earth, the world is a poorer place.
Book Synopsis To Walk a Crooked Road by : Haider Y. Sameh
Download or read book To Walk a Crooked Road written by Haider Y. Sameh and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was one of those dear ladies who was attending one of my revival meetings. She was a young lady who was married to a cowboy, a man with a hard and heavy heart, a very jealous man who did not believe in the salvation of Jesus Christ-who, as a matter of fact, did not believe that his young wife needed to be out in public where other men maybe about, especially around a fifteen-year-old preacher such as me! She had attended my services every night from the beginning since it started and, of course, unbeknownst to me, had nothing but praises for me as a young evangelist and my wonderful sermons. Well, after one of those services, her husband decided to stay up and wait for her return. He immediately confronted her as soon as she stepped into the house and said, "If you ever go back to that evangelist service again, I'm going to do something terrible to that evangelist of yours, something that you will regret for the rest of your life, do you understand?" Later on that week, she decided to go back to our revival meeting, even though she knew that it would cause a terrible confrontation with her husband. It was on a Thursday or Friday night when she showed up at our revival meeting, and unbeknownst to her, her husband had followed her to the meeting place. In the middle of the service, he came up next to her and sat down beside her. Of course, all this was going on without my knowledge! Apparently, he had determined that when I stood up to preach, he would use his six-shooter revolver-which was fully loaded with six bullets and belted in a side-strapped, tie-down holster-to put some holes into me! As I stood up to start my sermon, he stood up next to his wife, pulled his six-shooter out, aimed it at me, and started pulling the trigger.
Download or read book Zabar's written by Lori Zabar and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating, mouthwatering story (with ten recipes!) of the immigrant family that created a New York gastronomic legend: “The most rambunctious and chaotic of all delicatessens, with one foot in the Old World and the other in the vanguard of every fast-breaking food move in the city" (Nora Ephron, best-selling author and award-winning screenwriter). When Louis and Lilly Zabar rented a counter in a dairy store on 80th Street and Broadway in 1934 to sell smoked fish, they could not have imagined that their store would eventually occupy half a city block and become a beloved mecca for quality food of all kinds. A passion for perfection, a keen business sense, cutthroat competitive instincts, and devotion to their customers led four generations of Zabars to create the Upper West Side shrine to the cheese, fish, meat, produce, baked goods, and prepared products that heralded the twentieth-century revolution in food production and consumption. Lori Zabar—Louis’s granddaughter—begins with her grandfather’s escape from Ukraine in 1921, following a pogrom in which several family members were killed. She describes Zabar’s gradual expansion, Louis’s untimely death in 1950, and the passing of the torch to Saul, Stanley, and partner Murray Klein, who raised competitive pricing to an art form and added top-tier houseware and appliances. She paints a delectable portrait of Zabar’s as it is today—the intoxicating aromas, the crowds, the devoted staff—and shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes of the long-time employees, family members, eccentric customers, and celebrity fans who have created a uniquely American institution that honors its immigrant roots, revels in its New York history, and is relentless in its devotion to the art and science of selling gourmet food.
