Book excerpt: Work on the miners' Lock-Out of 1926 tends to focus on the perspective of the National Union of Mineworkers, while nothing has been written which attempts to examine, for example, how miner's wives coped for six months without pay. This book investigates the Lock-Out from the perspective of gender relations.

Book excerpt: Evans War is the sweeping tale of a young coalminer whose life takes a dramatic turn when he joins the army at the onset of the First World War and is sent to fight the Turks at Gallipoli. The book traces the saga of Evan Morgan from childhood in a small coalmining town in the Rhondda Valley of South Wales to Turkey and beyond. The cast of characters includes Welsh and English, Turk and Armenian, American, Australian and Indian. Leaving behind his childhood sweetheart, Gwyn, with a promise of marriage once the war ends, Evan arrives in Gallipoli unprepared for the horrors of trench warfare. But he finds an inner strength that sustains him during the terror of the landings and ensuing campaign against the solidly entrenched Turkish army. When he is wounded and taken prisoner, Evan finds himself in a prison hospital near what was then Constantinople. A series of events brings him to seek refuge from the war in a seemingly serene farming village on the shores of the Bosphorus populated by Turks and Armenians. Here, while seeking peace and contentment, he falls increasingly under the spell of a beautiful but mute Armenian girl with a tragic past. And it is here that the course of his life changes in ways he could never have imagined. Evans story is one of divided loyalties: the emotional pull of his homeland and the peaceful, bucolic life he finds in the village; his love for the free-spirited poet he left behind in Wales, and for the Armenian village girl. It is also one of conflict between nations, and between neighbors who cannot live together in peace. Above all it is a tale of Evan Morgans journey from childhood to maturity in a world gone mad.

Each of the book’s parts comprises full reproductions of the plays that defined the period and key critical writings that inform and contextualise their reading. "Here is an anthology of plays and criticism that all teachers of drama should take seriously. The fresh angles and approaches the volume offers on topics such as naturalism, the historical avant-garde, and breakthrough works by innovative performance artists (e.g., Laurie Anderson, SuAndi) all argue in favor of this collection as required reading in courses on modern stagecraft." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Ferrall and Dougal McNeill's book analyses the vast literary response to the 1926 General Strike. The Strike not only drew writers into political action but inspired literature that served to shape twentieth-century British views of class, culture and politics. While major figures active at the time wrote on or responded to this crucial moment, this is the first volume to address their respective works. Ferrall and McNeill show how novels then in progress, such as Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse and D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, were affected by the Strike, as well as the ways in which it has been remembered from the 1930s to the present. Their study sheds new light on the relationship between politics and literature of the modernist era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian postwar economic boom did not include one western coal-mining region. When the Canadian Pacific Railway switched to diesel power, over 2,000 coal-production jobs were lost in the Crowsnest Pass and Elk Valley. The Lights on the Tipple Are Going Out tells the story of its fight for survival. Underground mine closures began in 1950, prompting attempts by unions, leftist parties, municipal governments, and business groups to save the local economy. Efforts to reindustrialize in the mid-1960s brought unregulated growth, unsafe working conditions, and pollution. Starting in 1968, new strip mines were built to produce metallurgical coal for Asia-Pacific steelmakers. Not only is this an interesting regional history, but the consideration of the role of labour unions, local communists, and grassroots environmentalists makes it especially compelling. Today, with technological change in steel manufacturing on the horizon, propelled by the climate crisis, Langford argues that the Crowsnest Pass and Elk Valley must look toward ecosystem restoration, sustainable economic activities, and the inclusion of First Nations in decision making in order to embrace a future beyond coal.

Book excerpt: World War II brought about a remarkable expansion in female work opportunities in South Wales. Women suddenly found themselves performing unfamiliar work in unfamiliar surroundings and earning relatively handsome wages. Yet, despite the dramatic changes such work caused, surprisingly little is known about the experiences of women employed in the munitions factories of South Wales. A Forgotten Army aims to recover their lost voices and to highlight the vital role played by Welsh munitionettes in World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation is a groundbreaking volume that maps for the first time the translation history of Wales's two languages. This is also the first listing of Welsh-English literary translations and should be an indispensable tool not only for scholars but also for lay readers and for students of Celtic and Welsh literatures. As a resource that opens up for the first time one of the richest fields of translation in the British context, this bibliography is also a pioneering Welsh contribution to the burgeoning academic field of translation studies. The Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales (CREW), directed by Professor M. Wynn Thomas, received a prestitgious research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board for a one-year project in 2001 that was to culminate in a web-based database, an international conference and this published volume. S. Rhian Reynolds was employed as the postdoctoral research officer for the project, which grew far beyond the expected lifespan due to the wealth and quantity of the material uncovered. Translation practice has encompased the whole wealth of Welsh-language literature and among the thousands of translations recorded here are the acknowledged classics of European culture---The Mabinogion, the work of Dafydd ap Gwilym, the hymns of William Williams Pantycelyn and the plays, fiction, and political writings of Saunders Lewis. Ever since Welsh-English translation was first instigated in the eighteenth century it has provided an invaluable interface between Wales and the wider world (even non-anglophone cultures usually discover Welsh-language literature through the medium of English), between Wales and the other countries of the British Isles and (most importantly of all, perhaps) between the two cultures of Wales itself.

This accessible yet critical study sheds new light on that history of industrial and political conflict, but at the same time sets that history within the wider context of society as a whole.
