Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many species of fish occupying inland waters reside in watershedsthat were or still are surrounded by forests and are dependent inmajor ways upon such cover. The interactions between fishes andforests are complex, multifaceted, dynamic processes involving mostinland surface waters, forests, subsurface waters, geology andsoils, climate and its changes, and the biotic components of therelevant ecosystems. These interactions also include the aspects offorestry tied to human development, economics, population growthand even philosophies. Fishes and Forestry is truly a landmark publication. Theeditors, Professors Northcote and Hartman, have drawn together andcarefully edited chapters written by 56 scientists from around theworld, covering a vast wealth of information never before appearingwithin the covers of one book. Following an introductory chapter, this exceptional work is broadly divided into sections covering:the ecology of forests, streams, lakes and estuaries; fish biologyand ecology; forestry activities and their effects on aquaticsystems and fishes; 14 chapters covering examples of fish-forestryinteractions from around the world and a final section coveringmeans of effecting better fish-forestry interactions. Fishes and Forestry is an essential purchase for allthose involved in inland fisheries, forestry and their interaction, including fisheries scientists, fish biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists and forestry scientists. Libraries in alluniversities and research establishments where these subjects arestudied and taught should have several copies on their shelves.

Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to compile and synthesise existing information from government and industry sources on the nature of liquid effluents from municipalities and non-pulp mill industries in northern Alberta river basins. Information was obtained from 16 continuously discharging municipal sewage treatment plants, 77 periodically discharging sewage plants, and 62 licensed industrial discharges such as oil sands plants, coal mines, cement plants, and wood products operations. Information presented includes: description of wastewater treatment methods used; releases of treated sanitary wastewater; quantity and quantity of sewage treatment plant data; characteristics (chemical, nutrient, microbial, toxicological) of sanitary wastewater discharges; industrial effluent characteristics; and impacts on the aquatic environment. Gaps in the data are also identified.

Book excerpt: Synthesises results from research and monitoring studies undertaken to characterise nutrient loading from all point and diffuse sources in northern Alberta river basins. Also evaluates the impacts of nutrient loading on river chemistry, assesses the response of riverine biota to nutrient loading from pulp mill and municipal effluents, quantifies nutrient responses of benthic biota, and investigates interactions between nutrients and contaminants in pulp mill effluents on food webs. The findings are used to assess the state of aquatic ecosystem health and to develop scientific and management recommendations for the northern river basins.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on benthic macroinvertebrate and fish community structure are widely recognised as being very useful in cumulative assessment and issues of ecosystem health and integrity. Measurements of aquatic community structure have been made periodically within the northern Alberta river basins over the past 30 years, but these data have not been standardised or co-ordinated, nor analysed to determine their appropriateness or to assess the general state of the aquatic ecosystem. This report describes efforts to assess the nature and quality of long-term data sets measuring benthic invertebrate and fish community structure and effluent loading within the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave river drainages. Information was collated and standardised to assess the utility of applying current biomonitoring techniques to these data, and recommendations were made on the most appropriate approaches to use in a long-term cumulative effects monitoring plan.

Book excerpt: The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses results from artificial stream experiments in relation to the effects of effluent stressors and nutrient enrichment on benthic algal and invertebrate communities; also compares results from autumn 1993 and 1994 to document between-year variability in the relationships between effluent additions, and effects on primary and secondary producers. Results from spring 1994 are contrasted with those from autumn 1993 and 1994 to assess the importance of seasonal changes in moderating the nutrient-contaminant effects on benthic food web interactions. The artificial stream experiments were designed to decouple the effects on the riverine food web of the potentially confounding effects of nutrients and contaminants within effluent. By comparing the effects of nutrient and effluent treatments on different trophic components of the food web, the study was able to provide a mechanistic understanding of the stimulatory and/or inhihbitory effects of pulp mill effluents on the benthic food webs of the Athabasca River.
