Book excerpt: The Hackett edition of this classic of medieval philosophy and mysticism--a plan of pilgrimage for the learned Franciscan wishing to reach the apex of the mystical experience--combines the highly regarded Boehner translation with a new introduction by Stephen Brown focusing on St. Francis as a model of the contemplative life, the meaning of the Itinerarium, its place in Bonaventure's mystical theology, and the plan of the work. Boehner's Latin Notes, as well as Latin texts from other works of Bonaventure included in the Franciscan Institute Edition, are rendered here in English, making this the edition of choice for the beginning student.

Book excerpt: A Forty Day Journey into God with St. Bonaventure by Josef Raischl, ofs and Andre Cirino, ofm Journey on a forty-day retreat with two experienced retreat directors into the joyful acceptance of goodness that is at the core of Franciscan spirituality. The basic theological concepts found in St. Bonaventure's great work are presented in clear and practical language. Each day there are readings from the Journey into God, reflections by the two authors, and exercises the reader can carry out in daily life. The book may be used by groups or individuals journeying alone. For hearts and souls hungering for God, this book opens up new vistas. The authors show us how to get inside the heart of Bonaventure and how to embrace his understanding that all the universe is a ladder by which we can ascend to God. Sister Roberta McKelvie, OSF, Mission Integration, Alverna University, Reading, PA. In our use of the Journey text over Lent, it was relatively easy to adapt the format to our situation. People were following day by day and all spoke of how rich the book is, how they welcomed the opportunity to take it more slowly and how they plan to return to it! Working with this text over time has not only furthered my love and appreciation of Franciscan spirituality but has helped me develop the language and confidence to share this with others. Beyond his reputation as a finder of lost objects, much more can be known about this complex yet simple genius the Catholic Church calls saint and doctor. Inspired as a young man by the the example of the first Franciscan martyrs, Anthony embarked upon a life balanced by preaching and example, learning and love. Through excerpts from his sermons, he invites readers to search with him to find Jesus and to live the Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new translation of St. Bonaventure's classic of Mystical work by one who is an authority on the Seraphic doctor's theology. Written with comprehensive introduction and notes that never exist before in any of the language, this edition is a masterpiece. The Triple Way by the great Franciscan doctor of the Church, St. Bonaventure (1217-1274), is often called the "Summa of Spiritual Theology", a classic which has had and continues to have great influence in the theory and cultivation of the interior life of prayer and penance. This translation with notes by Fr. Peter Damien Fehlner, FI, is prefaced by a lengthy introduction and followed by several appendices illustrating the influence of Sts. Bernard and Anselm on the Seraphic Doctor. The editor is at pains to point out the Marian character of this great work seldom treated by other studies.

Book excerpt: SAINT BONAVENTURE COLLECTION [6 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Saint Bonaventure, born Giovanni di Fidanza, was an Italian medieval Franciscan, scholastic theologian and philosopher. The seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, he was also a Cardinal Bishop of Albano. He was canonised on 14 April 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV and declared a Doctor of the Church in the year 1588 by Pope Sixtus V. He is known as the "Seraphic Doctor". Many writings believed in the Middle Ages to be his are now collected under the name Pseudo-Bonaventura. He entered the Franciscan Order in 1243 and studied at the University of Paris, possibly under Alexander of Hales, and certainly under Alexander's successor, John of Rochelle. In 1253 he held the Franciscan chair at Paris. Unfortunately for Bonaventure, a dispute between seculars and mendicants delayed his reception as Master until 1257, where his degree was taken in company with Thomas Aquinas. Three years earlier his fame had earned him the position of lecturer on the The Four Books of Sentences—a book of theology written by Peter Lombard in the twelfth century—and in 1255 he received the degree of master, the medieval equivalent of doctor. —BOOKS— HOLINESS OF LIFE LIFE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST THE LIFE OF CHRIST THE LIFE OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI THE PSALTER OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY THE VIRTUES OF A RELIGIOUS SUPERIOR PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Book excerpt: 'But if you wish to know how these things come about ask grace not instruction, desire not understanding, the groaning of prayer not diligent reading, the Spouse not the teacher, God not man, darkness not clarity, not light but the fire that totally enflames and carries us into God by ecstatic unctions and burning affections. This fire is God and his furnace is in Jerusalem...' --Bonaventure, 1217-1274

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Doctor of the Church, in a lifetime crowded with absorbing activities—as ruler of his Order for almost twenty years, as Cardinal-Bishop, as director of the deliberations of an ecumenical council—yet became one of the Church’s supreme expositors of the theology of love. From the first he was known to be a giant, and succeeding centuries saw almost innumerable editions of his works. Archbishop Paschal Robinson has pointed out that no writer from the Middle Ages onward has been more widely read and copied. Yet comparatively little of this interest is reflected in publications in the English tongue. Of course, the Prince of Mystics (as Leo XIII called him) is not wholly unknown among us. So great is the power of his genius, so insistent his message to the heart and spirit, that these qualities have in some degree forced their way through whatever barriers exist. Translators of merit, both Franciscans and others, have brought over into English separate chosen opera; and these have conveyed enough of his greatness to establish it as a fact. But though he is an acknowledged master, he remains, by and large, to us a master still unread.
