Book Synopsis 'In the Vaults Beneath' by : Ceri Boston
Download or read book 'In the Vaults Beneath' written by Ceri Boston and published by Oxford Archaeology Monograph. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological investigations, undertaken as part of a programme to restore St George's Church, Bloomsbury, to its original Hawksmoor splendour, involved the removal of 871 triple lead-lined coffins from within the crypt and monitoring works within the churchyard. The elaborate named coffins of upper middle class parishioners provided a valuable opportunity to greatly develop the new field of post-medieval coffin analysis, and to integrate historical, archaeological and osteological data in order to build a vivid picture of this population. Over 90% of coffins were named, which allowed a rare opportunity to blind test osteological methods on 72 skeletons, whilst analysis of documentary and osteological evidence has challenged some long-held beliefs in post-medieval burial archaeology. Disease patterns in the St George's assemblage were influenced by the longevity and affluence of this population, factors that also underlay the necessity for elaborate and expensive dental treatment, including very early examples of fillings, filing and dentures.

Book Synopsis The Danakil Diary by : Wilfred Thesiger
Download or read book The Danakil Diary written by Wilfred Thesiger and published by HarperPerennial. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest and most influential expeditions of the man now considered to be the greatest living explorer. The Danakil Diary is the account of two journeys Thesiger made into the Danakil country in Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, in 1930-34 at the age of 24 - which, today, he still regards as the most dangerous he undertook. It was an extraordinary journey and a remarkable achievement. Thesiger succeeded in penetrating country that had wiped out two Italian expeditions and an Egyptian army before him, discovered what happened to the Awash River (one of the area's last geographical mysteries to be solved) and managed to survive amongst the Danakil tribesmen, to whom a man's status depended on the number of men he had killed and castrated. Besides giving early proof of Thesiger's descriptive genius - with his portrayal of the beautiful, savage landscapes, and their varied wildlife - The Danakil Diary reveals youthful evidence of his fierce motivation and uncompromising will, which are familiar hallmarks of his sixty years of travel among primitive peoples in some of the harshest and remotest areas of the world.

Book excerpt: "Shores of Discovery explores the lives and motives of those who have engaged in every conceivable kind of expedition: military, missionary, commercial, scientific, even tourist. It examines the bonds linking companies and bands, crews and fleets of soldiers, sailors, missionaries, and merchants, and the causes inspiring them to leave home, cross vast distances, and arrive in foreign lands." "Memorable in their own right as stories of human aspiration, these sagas of attempts to go beyond the limits of the known offer vital clues to our own time about how different nations and cultures communicate across the boundaries of words. Through the exchange of gods and goods and information, through wordless gesture and the sharing of clothing, through music and dance, medicine and painting, these voyagers have constructed the world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
