Download or read book A Research Agenda for Studying Rural Public Service Delivery Alternatives in the North Central Region written by David J. O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research agenda examines ways to improve availability and access to public services for individuals living in rural areas. Five articles focus on general conceptual and methodological issues pertaining to research on services, and are applicable to a wide range of services such as health and education. Discussions concentrate on public service problems in rural areas experiencing chronic population loss, loss of basic industries, and aging population. "Settlement Patterns and the Provision of Services in the North Central Region" (Edward W. Hassinger) examines the unique historical role of American rural communities as providers of services for rural populations in the Midwest. "Spatial Aspects of Public Services in Rural Areas" (Roger J. Beck) attempts to reconceptualize relationships between the local area and rural service delivery, given the demographic and economic changes described by Hassinger. "Ecological Correlates of Rural Service Delivery: The Case of Rural Health Care" (Jack Geller) uses a human ecological perspective to conceptualize the problem of providing services for persons in sparsely populated counties. "Community Leadership and Decision-making in the Provision of Rural Public Services" (Janet S. Ayres) examines relationships between local rural communities and the formal structures of local government. "Community Social Organization and the Coproduction of Public Services in Rural Areas" (David J. O'Brien) proposes an approach to conceptualizing and measuring more effective relationships between rural communities and formal service providers. The final section outlines specific steps that can be taken to develop a coherent research agenda. Contains 118 references. (KS)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers insight on access to justice from rural areas in internationally comparable contexts to highlight the diversity of experiences within, and across rural areas globally. It looks at the fundamental questions for people's lives raised by the issue of access to justice as well as the rule of law. It highlights a range of social, geographic and cultural issues which impact the way rural communities experience the justice system throughout the world with chapters on Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Kenya, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Syria, Turkey, the USA and Wales. Each chapter explores three questions: 1. How do people experience the institutions of justice in rural areas and how does this rural experience differ to an urban experience? 2. What impact have changes in policy had on the justice system in rural areas, and have rural and urban areas been affected in different ways? 3. What impact does the law have on people's lives in rural areas and what would rural communities like to be better understood about their experience of the justice system? By bringing in the voices and experiences of those who are often ignored or side-lined by justice systems, this book will set out an agenda for ensuring social justice in legal systems with a focus on protecting marginalised groups.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Resource Use by : Silva Larson
Download or read book Sustainable Resource Use written by Silva Larson and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way that humans organize both resource access and resource use is vital to the management of natural resources. Within different contexts, institutional arrangements (such as the rules of common and private property rights) become levers by which human behaviours can be modified and steered towards the goals of sustainable natural resource management. Featuring contributions from leading thinkers in the field, this groundbreaking volume examines institutional dynamics from the perspective of natural resource management. The book is organized into four parts. The first discusses institutional diversity and contextual change. Following this, institutional misfit is analysed with a strong focus on the long-term impacts of colonial structures in the Asia-Pacific region. The book then discusses experiences with institutional dynamics in order to ease the tension of such misfits before examining future research needs.Ultimately, through careful argument and by deploying original research, the authors make the case that institutional arrangements cannot be perceived as a set of parameters that can be optimized and locked in for the most efficient functioning of a system; nor can institutions be evaluated outside the context in which they were developed. This is powerful, thought-provoking and important reading for academics, researchers, policy-makers and professionals in resource, institutional and environmental economics and land use planning and policy across the full range of natural resource sectors from forestry to agriculture.Published with CSIRO.Cover image: Blue Flower of Life (c) Theresa J.
