According to the Byzantine historian Procopius, in 535-537 CE the Emperor Justinian ordered one of his generals to end this situation by destroying the island's temples. This account has usually been accepted as a sufficient explanation for the end of the Ancient Egyptian cults at Philae. Yet it is by no means unproblematic. This book shows that the event of 535-537 has to be seen in a larger context of religious transformation at Philae, which was more complex and gradual than Procopius describes it. Not only are the various Late Antique sources from and on Philae taken into account, for the first time the religious developments at Philae are also placed in a regional context by analyzing the sources from the other major towns in the region, Syene (Aswan) and Elephantine. The temples were modified and extended during the course of the Ptolemaic dynasty and this detailed study presents the first full publication of the architectural development and relief decoration of this site. Separate chapters address the principles of decoration, the architectural development of the site, the attributes of the Pharaoh and deities, the evolution of the human figure in the reliefs and, finally, artisan work methods. A computer facilitated the recording of the 29 variables associated with each of the 824 offering scenes. This approach, adaptable to other sites, allowed the handling of an otherwise unmanageable amount of information. The computer database is printed in full, with tabulated information gathered from it. The 1274 drawings illustrate all the offerings, crowns, clothing and other attributes depicted in the relief decoration at Philae. The plates illustrate the architectural details, the work methods of the artisans and the changing rendering of the human figure during the course of the Ptolemaic dynasty.

It focuses primarily on the Nubian response to the traditional pharaonic, Hellenistic/Roman, Hellenizing, and “hybrid” elements of Ptolemaic and Roman Egyptian culture. The author begins with a history of Nubian art and a critical survey of the literature on Ptolemaic and Roman Egyptian art. Special chapters are then devoted to the discussion of the Egyptian-Greek interaction in the arts of Ptolemaic Egypt, the place of Egyptian Hellenistic and Hellenizing art within the oikumene, the pluralistic visual world of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt, as well as on the specific genre of terracotta sculpture. Utilizing examples from Meroe City and Musawwarat es Sufra, the author argues that cultural transfer from Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt to Nubia resulted in an inward-focused adaptation.
