Book excerpt: Facility conditions in public schools across the United States continue to be a debated issue at the local and national levels. Building conditions and funding for renovating aging buildings have sparked concerns with students, parents, teachers, and educators. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between school leader’s perceptions of their facility conditions in the learning environment from the ELEA instrument, a facility checklist, to performance indicators academic achievement and student attendance. The researcher evaluated school leader’s perceptions utilizing the results of the 2011 instrument, the Effective Learning Environment Assessment (ELEA), an instrument created and validated as a measurement tool of school leader’s perceptions of their facility conditions as defined by Dorris’ (2011b) seven dimensions: environmental conditions, versatility and flexibility, collaboration, personalization, technology compatible, school ethos, and community. A quantitative correlational study using the instrument results and corresponding 2011 Math and Reading achievement scores from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) as well as corresponding 2011 student attendance data as evidenced by the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) was used in the research analysis. The research study included survey responses from 182 school leaders across the state of Texas which was comprised of ninety-one school campuses. The researcher performed hierarchical multiple regression analysis to determine if there was statistical significance at the 0.05 level. After isolating the control variable-socioeconomic status, the remaining independent variables: economic conditions, versatility and flexibility, collaboration, personalization, technologically compatible, school ethos, and community were analyzed in the regression model for their effect on the performance indicators?student achievement and student attendance. The study showed there was a direct relationship between school leader’s perceptions of facility conditions in the ELEA dimensions personalization and community and student achievement. However, there was no relationship between educator’s perceptions of the ELEA dimensions environmental conditions, versatility and flexibility, technologically compatible, collaboration, and school ethos. The study showed there was no relationship between school leader’s perception of their facility conditions and student attendance. Future research was recommended to further explore the use of facility checklist instruments.

The author sought an understanding of the reason behind the persistent academic failure of inner-city minority and low-SES high school students, as well as the academic achievement gap within and between this subgroup of students. Conducted in a high-poverty, high-minority comprehensive inner-city high school in the south of the United States of America, the aim of the study was threefold. First, the author explored the factors operating in high school students’ thoughts, feelings, actions, and reactions to school and academic achievement. Second, she examined the mechanisms by which these factors operate. Third, she utilized an integrated humanistic paradigm in analyzing student learning and academic behavior, the interaction between student characteristics and school processes, and the school culture that emerged from the interaction. The integrated framework for the study comprised of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of human development, Bandura’s sociocoginity theory of learning, and Bourdieu’s concept of habitus. The study’s findings have implication for student learning, academic behavior, and academic achievement; school organization and functioning, as well as administrative behavior and school culture.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was first, to develop a unique model to define the proximal environments of students in the selected public school district. Second, the purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists between proximal environments and academic achievement measures for students in an urban school district, and if so, which elements of the environment are related to diminishing performance. Finally, the purpose of this study was to discuss how research findings impact policy for the selected school district. The model used to develop environmental profiles was based on school attendance zones as the unit of analysis. This model determined which census tracts were located in which school attendance zones, and used census data to define the demographics of that school environment based upon the corresponding census tracts. In addition to the use of census data, the model used crime data to determine the per capita crime rate for each school's surrounding community. What contributes to the significance of this model is its interactive, geographic quality, which allows school districts to visualize the surrounding communities of individual schools. The results of this study suggest that the proximal environments of students attending selected public schools in the study school district are associated with CAT achievement measures for students in this district. Children dwelling in areas of the study district with low levels of income, low levels of adult educational attainment and high-density households are at risk for low achievement. The two variables that accounted for the most variance in achievement for the study district are the percentage of adults with bachelor's degrees in a community, and the percentage of households with 7 or more people. Even though the statistical analysis did not reveal significant relationships between achievement and high crime or achievement and high percentages of female headed households for the entire group of schools, it did demonstrate that these relationships may be significant for individual schools within the district. The results of this study had three policy implications for the study district. Findings suggested that policy efforts should focus on involving community agencies and coordinating community resources; developing positive parental-school partnerships; and developing and maintaining procedures for identifying and researching conditions that influence student attendance and achievement.

This study determined whether the AAU females in this study perceived the social factors in the literature review to impact their academic achievement, the relationship between those social factors and academic achievement, and the differences in academic achievement by socioeconomic status. One hundred fifty-eight (158) AAU female students from three high schools in one urban district located in southeast Texas participated in this study. A self-generated 51-item questionnaire (Students' Perceptions of Social Factors Affecting Academic Achievement in Urban Schools) was used to collect data for this study. There were three major results in the study. First, there were not any significant factors impacting the academic achievement of AAU females; secondly, AAU females did not perceive any social factors as significantly affecting their academic achievement; and finally, there were not any statistical differences between socioeconomic status and academic achievement. Specifically, the results did not reveal a difference between AAU 12th grade female students on free and reduced lunch and those not on free and reduced lunch in terms of academic performance.
