Book excerpt: In this scholarly and controversial work, Richard Tydings challenges the traditional Anglican doctrine of apostolic succession, which holds that the authority of the Church derives from an unbroken chain of bishops going back to the apostles. The author argues that this doctrine has no basis in Scripture or history, and refutes the claims made by some Anglicans that John Wesley and Thomas Coke were validly consecrated bishops. A thought-provoking study of a contentious theological issue. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. John Wesley and Dr. Coke; In Answer to the Rev. G. T. Chapman, and Others Sometime about the year 1829, when stationed in the city of Lexington, my attention was called to a recent publication, entitled "Sermons upon the Ministry, Worship, and Doctrines of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and other subjects; by the Rev. G. T. Chapman, D. D. Rector of Christ, Church," in that city. In this work, the Author claims for himself, and his beloved "Zion," exceedingly high and imposing titles; such as the "Primitive Apostolic Church;" "the only true Church, or 'Bride' of Christ;" the only Church that has a true, and properly authorized ministry; the Roman Catholic Church excepted. These high claims, it would appear, are set up on the obsolete, and long since exploded doctrine, of uninterrupted Apostolic Succession; which succession, the author supposes, belongs to his church. In other words, that her ministers have received holy orders from the Apostles, through a long line of Popes, Archbishops, and Diocesan, Bishops; which places them in possession of divine authority to minister in holy things. Book excerpt: Professor Holifield locates the southern theologians in their broader American setting and in the context of European debates about reason, revelation, science, and moral philosophy. He thus explores a wide range of topics that clarify the history of southern--and American--religion: the presuppositions of liberalism and the logic of conservatism; the influence of Scottish Common-Sense Philosophers, British theologians, and German Biblical critics; the foundations and functions of southern social ethics; the didactic uses of ritual; and the continuing effort of nineteenth-century theologians to demonstrate the reasonableness of both the Christian religion and the whole natural order.

Download or read book Come Shouting to Zion written by Sylvia R. Frey and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conversion of African-born slaves and their descendants to Protestant Christianity marked one of the most important social and intellectual transformations in American history. Come Shouting to Zion is the first comprehensive exploration of the processes by which this remarkable transition occurred. Using an extraordinary array of archival sources, Sylvia Frey and Betty Wood chart the course of religious conversion from the transference of traditional African religions to the New World through the growth of Protestant Christianity in the American South and British Caribbean up to 1830. Come Shouting to Zion depicts religious transformation as a complex reciprocal movement involving black and white Christians. It highlights the role of African American preachers in the conversion process and demonstrates the extent to which African American women were responsible for developing distinctive ritual patterns of worship and divergent moral values within the black spiritual community. Finally, the book sheds light on the ways in which, by serving as a channel for the assimilation of Western culture into the slave quarters, Protestant Christianity helped transform Africans into African Americans.

Download or read book Thomas Coke written by John A. Vickers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since John Wesley departed from Anglican usage by "consecrating" him as Superintendent of American Methodism, Thomas Coke has been a center of controversy. Though remembered primarily as the "Father of Methodist missions," he was a key figure in the development of Methodism on both sides of the Atlantic in the years before and after Wesley's death. To write his biography is to write much of the history of the Church he served. This makes it all the more surprising that no serious study of Thomas Coke has appeared in England for over a century, and that the only substantial twentieth-century biography is that of Bishop Candler published in America more than forty years ago. In the words of Cyril Davey on the occasion of the bicentenary of Coke's birth, "No man in Methodism had a greater significance for his own age, for Methodism, and for the Missionary movement. No man, deserving to be remembered, has been more completely forgotten." The present book is, in fact, the first documented study of the man ever published. Based to a considerable degree on unpublished primary material, it aims to present Coke as a human being in relation to, and often in conflict with, his contemporaries. At the same time it examines critically the accusations of self-seeking ambition and inconsistency repeatedly brought against him. And it reviews his various roles as Wesley's right-hand man, as Asbury's uneasily yoked colleague, as a pioneer of missions at home as well as abroad, as preacher and author, and as devoted husband.

Book Synopsis Systematics Critical and Constructive 2: With Compendium Interactions by : Ronald R. Ray

This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christian systematic theologian should read widely, think deeply, and share ideas concerning the biblical meaning of Christian Faith (as do biblical theologians). But for systematics the decisive focus is on the normative significance of Christian faith for today, having taken account of insights from various disciplines, from biblical and historical theology in particular, and from the systematic theologies that one finds helpful. In its critical and constructive effort this volume is much indebted to the writings of a wide range of systematic and biblical theologians. Sometimes in the background but often in the foreground is biblical analysis and interpretation. This writing never just expounds the ideas of particular systematic or biblical theologians, but utilizes them where helpful for articulating Christian Faith.
Book Synopsis Passion for Truth by : Rev. Fr. Juan R. Velez

Book excerpt: In "Passion for Truth", author and scholar Fr. Juan R. Vélez painstakingly uncovers the life and work of Blessed John Henry Newman. In the story of his early years, his family upbringing and university education, and through his vast correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues, Vélez acquaints us with Newman, the loyal friend, profound thinker, prolific writer, and holy priest. A true Catholic gentleman, who can be admired and loved by all who love the Truth.Newman was a talented but timid young man, who often doubted his own competence, but was to become one of the most influential teachers and writers of the 19th Century.Starting life as a devout and promising Anglican scholar, he finished the race a faithful and unwavering Catholic priest and Cardinal, to the disappointment of some of his closest friends and the great joy of many others. His prominent position as an Anglican clergyman and Oxford don made his long anticipated conversion the subject of great interest to many of his contemporaries and once he crossed over to Rome, many Anglicans followed his lead. His clarity of thought as a scholar was such as is hardly seen in contemporary society and was even growing rare in his own day.A relentless pursuit of wisdom did not allow him to simply store away his knowledge but urged him to conform his life to what was true wherever and whenever he discovered it. This passion for Truth did not always gain him friends, but it ultimately gained him what he valued above all else: a home in the True Church of Christ.
Book Synopsis Social Theory and Social History by : Donald MacRaild
Download or read book Social Theory and Social History written by Donald MacRaild and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of social history that took place in the twentieth century has produced some of the most exciting works in the field of historical studies. As the range of the social historian's concerns has grown, so has the range of methodologies and theoretical approaches they employ. Historians have made greater use of the theoretical insights of social scientists, and boundaries between the disciplines have become blurred as a consequence. Social Theory and Social History: - Covers the major developments within social history - Offers an introduction to the most important social theorists - Discusses the relationship between history and the social sciences - Considers the use of theory in the writing of history - Examines current debates within historiography In this concise introductory guide, Donald M. MacRaild and Avram Taylor explore the complex relationship between social theory and social history, arguing that an awareness of the relation between the two is the key to a deeper understanding of the process of historical change.
