Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a workshop held at the University of Bielefeld in Germany in March 1986, this book presents the work of researchers from a diversity of fields, from neuroanatomy to behavioural ecology, covering the anatomy, physiology and behavioural correlates of the auditory system in the vertebrate class amphibia. It summarizes all aspects of the amphibian auditory system, reviewing current knowledge of the structure, function and evolution of this sensory system, and offers new contributions to our understanding of this subject. Chapters discuss amphibian phylogeny, the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral auditory system, the anatomy and physiology of central auditory areas, specialized topics in sound localization, the development of the amphibian auditory system (including changes that occur during metamorphosis), acoustic communication in anurans, selected topics in the evolution of amphibian and vertebrate audition, and others aspects.

It is also of general interest to ecologists (e.g. Ecological Society of America; > 3000 or 4000 members at annual meeting), physiologists (e.g. American Society of Plant Biologists; > 2,000 members at annual meeting), and tropical biologists (e.g. Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation, ATBC; > 500 members at annual meeting). (American Geophysical Union(AGU), > 20000 members at annual meeting). Since plant physiology is taught at every university that offers a life sciences, forestry or agricultural program, and physiology is a focus at research institutes and agencies worldwide, the book is a must-have for university and research institution libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully written exploration of how cooperation shaped life on earth, from its single-celled beginnings to complex human societies In this rich, wide-ranging, beautifully illustrated volume, Egbert Leigh explores the results of billions of years of evolution at work. Leigh, who has spent five decades on Panama’s Barro Colorado Island reflecting on the organization of various amazingly diverse tropical ecosystems, now shows how selection on “selfish genes” gives rise to complex modes of cooperation and interdependence. With the help of such artists as the celebrated nature photographer Christian Ziegler, natural history illustrator Deborah Miriam Kaspari, and Damond Kyllo, Leigh explains basic concepts of evolutionary biology, ranging from life’s single-celled beginnings to the complex societies humans have formed today. The book covers a range of topics, focusing on adaptation, competition, mutualism, heredity, natural selection, sexual selection, genetics, and language. Leigh’s reflections on evolution, competition, and cooperation show how the natural world becomes even more beautiful when viewed in the light of evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers pot-pollen—the other product, besides honey, stored in cerumen pots by Meliponini. Critical assessment is given of stingless bee and pot-pollen biodiversity in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Topics addressed include historical biogeography, cultural knowledge, bee foraging behavior, pollination, ecological interactions, health applications, microbiology, the natural history of bee nests, and chemical, bioactive and individual plant components in stored pollen. Pot-pollen maintains the livelihoods of stingless bees and provides many interesting biological products that are just now beginning to be understood. The Meliponini have developed particular nesting biologies, uses of building materials, and an architecture for pollen storage. Environmental windows provide optimal temperature and availability of pollen sources for success in plant pollination and pollen storage. Palynological composition and pollen taxonomy are used to assess stingless honey bee pollination services. Pollen processing with microorganisms in the nest modifies chemical composition and bioactivity, and confers nutraceutical benefits to the honey and pollen widely relished by native people. Humans have always used stingless bees. Yet, sustainable meliponiculture (stingless bee-keeping) projects have so far lacked a treatise on pot-pollen, which experts provide in this transdisciplinary, groundbreaking volume.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the importance and roles of seed microbiomes in sustainable agriculture by exploring the diversity of microbes vectored on and within seeds of both cultivated and non-cultivated plants. It provides essential insights into how seeds can be adapted to enhance microbiome vectoring, how damaged seed microbiomes can be assembled again and how seed microbiomes can be conserved. Plant seeds carry not only embryos and nutrients to fuel early seedling growth, but also microbes that modulate development, soil nutrient acquisition, and defense against pathogens and other stressors. Many of these microbes (bacteria and fungi) become endophytic, entering into the tissues of plants, and typically exist within plants without inducing negative effects. Although they have been reported in all plants examined to date, the extent to which plants rely on seed vectored microbiomes to enhance seedling competitiveness and survival is largely unappreciated. How microbes function to increase the fitness of seedlings is also little understood. The book is a unique and important resource for researchers and students in microbial ecology and biotechnology. Further, it appeals to applied academic and industrial agriculturists interested in increasing crop health and yield.

Book excerpt: Together with his coauthors, Nguyen Quang Truong modernized taxonomic concepts and nomenclature, filled gaps with new knowledge on the herpetofauna, mostly with the astonishingly perpetuating new discoveries which increased and still increase the number of species in this impressive way. The herpetological exploration of Vietnam, originally based on the classic, monographic works (1934 - 1944) of the French author Rene Bourret, was followed by a most intensive period of herpetofaunistic and taxonomic research just in the last few decades. This was carried out by Vietnamese, but also many foreign herpetologists, among them Russian, Canadian, US-American, British and last but not least German teams which often cooperated also among each other. This period of intensified research resulted in the discovery and description of numerous new species and even genera. My colleague and friend Kraig Adler, Cornell University, contributed an own and detailed chapter on this important asp10ect of the history of Vietnamese herpetology to the present new book.As can be seen from the extended acknowledgement section of this book, numerous colleagues from many countries were helpful and gave information, comments and/or their photographs for this comprehensive checklist of Vietnam's amphibians and reptiles. This remarkable new book reflects the high degree of international cooperation and is thus also a splendid example for other countries with a similarly rich natural heritage. I am happy that, together with the Zoological Garden of Cologne, also my institute is allowed to take part in this fruitful cooperation. Finally, it is also necessary to acknowledge the role of the Publisher. The engagement of 'Chimaira', Frankfurt am Main, in editing this book is highly appreciated as it enables - at last - the international availability of all the information on Vietnam's herpetofauna which has been gathered by the above-mentioned herpetological community
