Book excerpt: Congestion control is concerned with allocating the resources in a network such that the network can operate at an acceptable performance level when the demand exceeds or is near the capacity of the network resources. These resources include bandwidths of links, buffer space (memory) and processing capacity at intermediate nodes. Although resource allocation is necessary even at low load, the problem becomes more important as the load increases. Without proper congestion control mechanisms, the throughput may be reduced considerably under heavy load. Future applications are expected to require increasingly higher bandwidth and generate a heterogeneous mix of network traffic. ATM network is potentially capable of supporting all classes of traffic (e.g., voice, video, and data) and have multiple service classes allow audio, video and data to share the same network. Of these, the Available Bit Rate (ABR) service class is designed to efficiently support data traffic. Switch algorithms have been the most investigated topic of ABR. This has happened because the specification of ABR given by the ATM Forum allows a diversity of switch algorithms to be implemented. These range from the simplest binary switches to the more complex ER switches. The major part of this thesis has been devoted to ABR. First an introduction to the concept of congestion control and a brief literature survey of congestion control for ABR service of ATM networks are presented. Then two proposed congestion control mechanisms for the ABR service class in ATM networks are examined by means of simulation, showing the different degree of performance and complexity. The simulation results presented in this thesis were obtained using a network simulator written in C++. This network simulator is a small event driven program. Analytical results were derived for different network configurations and different scenarios using this program.

Appropriate control mechanisms which can handle congestion and guarantee high throughput in various traffic scenarios (with different networking phenomena being considered) are proposed. Systematic design procedures using sound control-theoretic foundations are adopted. Since robustness issues are of major concern in providing efficient data-flow regulation in today’s networks, sliding-mode control is selected as the principal technique to be applied in creating the control solutions. The controller derivation is given extensive analytical treatment and is supported with numerous realistic simulations. A comparison with existing solutions is also provided. The concepts applied are discussed in a number of illustrative examples, and supported by many figures, tables, and graphs walking the reader through the ideas and introducing their relevance in real networks. Academic researchers and graduate students working in computer networks and telecommunications and in control (especially time-delay systems and discrete-time optimal and sliding-mode control) will find this text a valuable assistance in ensuring smooth data-flow within communications networks.

Hosts at end-points as well as switches in a network have to participate in some flow control mechanisms to avoid or control congestion while achieving high resource utilization. In ATM networks, a major challenge during flow control is the use of closed-loop-feedback controls along a fat pipe. This thesis is a study of ABR flow control for ATM networks, and consists of two parts. First, two major flow control schemes, credit-based and rate-based flow control, are reviewed and the relative merits of these two approaches are discussed. Then, the credit-based flow control for the Credit Net ATM host interface at Carnegie Mellon University is examined. Different types of credit-based flow control are implemented and evaluated through performance measurements in an OC-3 based ATM local area network (LAN) environment. It is demonstrated that, as far as hosts are concerned, the credit-based flow control can be simply and cost effectively implemented without losing flexibility when a mechanism named partial packet scheduling is employed. The ability to deal with a small buffer size without degrading throughput drastically is a big gain of the partial packet scheduling implementation. The work was done in the context of the Credit Net project while the author remained aware of the fact that rate-based flow control has been adopted by the ATM Forum."
