Book excerpt: As a child actor who smoothly transitioned to adult stardom, Natalie Wood made an unforgettable impact on the world with her sensitive performances and her spectacular beauty. In a span of less than twenty years, her talent graced a dozen classics, including Miracle on 34th Street, The Searchers, Rebel Without a Cause, Splendor in the Grass, West Side Story, and Gypsy, earning her three Oscar nominations and two Golden Globes. Few actresses in Hollywood history have carved out careers as diverse and rich as Natalie Wood's, and few have touched as many hearts in a tragically short lifetime. Natalie Wood: Reflections on a Legendary Life boldly redefines Natalie not by her tragic death, but by her extraordinary life. This is the first family-authorized photographic study of Natalie Wood, and the first book to examine her glamorous film career as well as her private off-screen life as a wife and mother. Highlights include a special section on the making of West Side Story, a foreword by her husband Robert Wagner, a family album with never-before-seen snapshots captioned by daughter Courtney Wagner, an unpublished article written by Natalie in her own words, and an afterword by friend and costar Robert Redford. Natalie Wood: Reflections on a Legendary Life will change the way the world remembers a Hollywood legend.

Book excerpt: Our exciting adventure began innocently enough. Harry Hansen was perusing the London Times, when he discovered a lengthy obituary of a remarkable person, The Earl of North London. While searching for more information on The Earl, it became evident to Harry that a series of deaths was taking Obit-Ink Limited from operating in the red to operating in the black. Harry refused to believe that these deaths were happening by chance and started his own investigation. In his pursuit of justice, he suspected a close colleague at Obit-Ink of the crimes, encountered a love from his past, and found that he was marked for death. Relying on the experience and wisdom of his old friend, Superintendent Harrison of The Yard, a plan was devised to ensnare the murderer, using Harry as bait for the trap.
Book Synopsis From Miniskirt to Hijab by : Jacqueline Saper
Download or read book From Miniskirt to Hijab written by Jacqueline Saper and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacqueline Saper, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, was born in Tehran to Iranian and British parents. At eighteen she witnessed the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times, including the Iran-Iraq War. In a deeply intimate and personal story, Saper recounts her privileged childhood in prerevolutionary Iran and how she gradually became aware of the paradoxes in her life and community—primarily the disparate religions and cultures. In 1979 under the Ayatollah regime, Iran became increasingly unfamiliar and hostile to Saper. Seemingly overnight she went from living a carefree life of wearing miniskirts and attending high school to listening to fanatic diatribes, forced to wear the hijab, and hiding in the basement as Iraqi bombs fell over the city. She eventually fled to the United States in 1987 with her husband and children after, in part, witnessing her six-year-old daughter’s indoctrination into radical Islamic politics at school. At the heart of Saper’s story is a harrowing and instructive tale of how extremist ideologies seized a Westernized, affluent country and transformed it into a fundamentalist Islamic society.
